Daylight Saving

Agree, it’s still humid here in Newcastle for most of the month.

DST should be the permanent time zone in NSW (ACT), VIC, SA and TAS.

SA should be -1hr on VIC/NSW at all times.

QLD / NT can choose to be aligned with NSW / SA respectively, or -1hr behind at all times.

NSW could maybe get away with it, but VIC and TAS, I don’t think so. Would make sunrise 8:30am in June… no thanks.

I agree entirely. But trying to get a deal with the haters

It’s impossible to deal with people who are 1 hour plus 30 years behind.

Winter solstice sunrise times, if we stayed on permanent DST

and just for fun, if the Southern states all decided to abandon DST, here’s the sunrise times on the summer solstice

This map should also demonstrate why Brisbane and SEQ would benefit from moving to DST in summer, and why those in FNQ are less enthusiastic (since this is the longest day of the year, this is the day/time of the earliest sunrise)

I have no issue with late winter sunrises. It’s only for a couple of months. As soon as it hits August it gets light very quick in the mornings. It’s only really June and July when it’s noticeably dark.

The US tried permanent DST about 50 years ago and it was a massive failure.

The public absolutely hated the dark winter mornings and permanent DST was repealed after widespread public outrage.

It was mostly about child safety fears, with kids leaving home in the dark to go to school. Though this is a common occurrence in parts of Canada and Northern Europe, and their kids seem to survive.

Yes, and it’s weird sweating in the dark at 7 AM!

Look, I still haven’t adjusted to sweating in the dark at 7pm during summer either. I guess you just have to pick your poison.

But yes, if I was grand emperor, DST would run nationwide and run from the Sunday after the spring equinox to the Sunday after the autumn equinox, no more. And those Croweaters would ditch the half-hour time offset too.

As a croweater who has a job involving time zones, I have no idea why we do it either. Would love Central Time being halfway between Eastern and Western!

I had always thought it was because the vast majority of SA’s population are closer to the eastern states than to WA?

Which is what summer is anyhow: a poison, a pox, a pimple on the posterior to be endured rather than enjoyed***

***Except in the Devil State, where you can still freeze whilst enjoying day cricket at Bellerive Oval at 2100.

Said it before and will say it again, set it half way between and be done with it. Takes out both extremes of sunrise/set.

+30 year-round actually works pretty well as a nice compromise for Queensland too

Give me SA time zone as it is, could end daylight saving a few weeks earlier in April as it rises and sets too late and early. I swear SA used to end daylight saving before the eastern states years ago.
