A reminder that DST ends in NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS and SA tomorrow at 3am local time - clocks will go back one hour to 2am.
Wish they would just get rid of it. But at least I get an extra hour this time.
Sunrise today was about 0720 (Canberra), far too late imo. Much worse the further west you go in the timezone; areas like Portland VIC wouldn’t have seen sunrise until about 0750.
Beginning of October until the beginning of March is optimal.
No it’s perfectly fine now. You can start to whinge about it being dark when you get home from next week.
Melbourne sunrise was 7:38am this morning. Tomorrow will be 6:38am after the change, gradually moving to 7:36am sunrise on the shortest day of the year, 21 June. If we didn’t change the clocks back, sunrise would be at 8:36am that day, and sunrise after 8am from May to September!
Assuming that the same time zone / point in time is used in those caps (ie AEST or AEDST in both) it’s still going to be light in Brisbane and dark in Melbourne at the same time tomorrow too… Daylight saving won’t change that.
Melbourne get darker and my home Brisbane brighter morning
Yeah, at this time of year the sun rises about 30 or so minutes earlier in Brisbane due to our location being further east (and closer to the equator). In winter, it rises about a full hour earlier than Melbourne.
Anyway, we welcome all you southerners back to the early twilight zone…
Yes but what daylight saving will change is that it was dark at 7:04am local time in Melbourne yesterday, and today it’s bright at 7:04am.
Nice and bright at 0600 this morning- thank goodness for that. The latest sunrise of the year in standard time terms would be about 0705-0710 here (without looking it up) so significantly earlier than yesterday’s 0720.
Nothing to do with the clocks going back but we also had our first ground frost this morning.
One doesn’t always appreciate how far west Melbourne really is. Even less appreciated is how far west FNQ is; Cairns is roughly as far west as the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Definitely feeling the seasonal depression in the air tonight. All the life and vibrancy gone from the streets compared to last week.
Can’t talk for other locations, but the weather has fairly rapidly turned here too which impacts this
Love it! Can’t wait for winter.
Yep, it’s the most depressing week of the year with the cold weather setting in.
Although, I think Melbourne is getting some warm weather later in the week will help.
I disagree about the beginning of October part for the start of DST.
It starts much too late.
Our earliest sunrise of the year is usually in October on the morning before daylight saving starts.
In early October just before it starts it’s getting light around 5am here in Canberra, much too early.
I think mid-September would be a much better starting point.
Yeah I always notice that when DST ends too, and this year is no different.
People just seem to stop going out.
Whilst it was nice to wake up for work this morning and it wasn’t completely dark like it has been for the last few weeks, it was very noticeable this afternoon just how early it got dark.
I got home from work at 5pm and planned to mow the yard and do some work in the garden this afternoon; by the time I got changed and mowed the backyard it was about 6pm and already getting dark, so I had to skip the garden jobs. I definitely preferred it when the evenings were lighter last week and I could get stuff done.
I’ve got to admit I also found it weird cooking dinner and checking the clock and realising it was only 6:50pm, it was so dark it felt much later
Yep, the latest sunrise in most DST-observing states tends to be the last day the clocks are on summer time, not the middle of winter. Another pointer to suggest that DST runs a few weeks too long.
Not DST territory here obviously, but yes the weather has changed since the weekend too. Gone is the humidity (thank god) and currently it’s clear skies, dry, warm days and cool(ish) nights - the best that Queensland has to offer.
