Yes, never understood the half hour thing with SA/NT, agree that they should be 1 hr behind VIC/NSW.
As a WA man who has been through 3 of these changes now since moving to Melbourne, it still shakes me up LOL
I think either move Australia to UTC+10 or UTC+11 year round. No more daylight savings. I would prefer UTC+11, as there is still daylight at 8pm in January without Daylight Savings. Also the sun would be up earlier than 8am in VIC.
It is such a big issue changing the clock once per year
. There are more important things we should be discussing.
It’s twice a year, you have to change it back in autumn as well.
I don’t disagree that there are more important issues, but this one is still relevant.
Sure. It will be great going home at 4.30pm in Winter, in the dark.
There are a few months of the year in mid-winter where it wouldn’t be great.
I just think Daylight Saving should be extended. At least one week earlier in September (in line with New Zealand) or up to three weeks. I also think we could handle it being extended to late April.
If we did last week in September to last week in April, it would bring us closer to the seven months of DST in Europe and nearly eight months in America.
I’ve never understood this point or comment when it comes up. This is a forum, where we discuss… lots of different things. Why should this be any different?
It would cause problems moving to to permanent DST +11 UCT especially in the southern most states that have the shortest days in Winter. Midwinter sunrise would occur after 8:30 am in Victoria and Tasmania so that the majority of workers would be going to work in the dark as well as many school children. If there was a permanent shift, perhaps +10.30 would be better. The advantage of permanent DST is to remove the negative health effects that are well document as a result of changing sleep cycles twice a year.
Listen to Karl explain why DST doesn’t work in areas closer to the equator.
I think the GMT+9:30 is from a bygone era where Adelaide wanted to be closer in time to the eastern states. Almost certain it predates daylight saving.
For Tasmania it’s a perfect length of time as it is. Other participating states moved to align themselves with Tasmania in having the beginning of October instead of the end of October. At the other end though it changed to the first week of April to change back instead of March. That extra week actually makes a difference in Tas - it feels too long and no longer feels like a summer treat the way it is. All year round would be absolutely terrible. Like taking away Christmas.
I just don’t understand why as a society we are so dictated by the time on a clock. Seeing comments like now I can go for an evening walk confuses me. There should be a better way we function that isn’t reliant on the time of a clock.
Because it’s safer to go for a walk when it’s not dark. I’d imagine that’s one of the main reasons for that comment,
But that isn’t my point. You can still walk with the sun up. Why do we need to be dictated by the time on a clock. I do get some people work certain hours. But why can’t employers be more flexible to allow better working arrangements. You look at places like Spain that shut shops in the afternoon and open again until later at night. Other cultures do it. But I’m australia we are so routined and need that transitional 8-6 working timeframe.
Got it the wrong way around.
Currently at the Winter Solstice, Melbourne has sunrise at 6.33am and sunset at 5.37pm (GMT+10). If we went to GMT+11 year round, this would move to 7.33am and 6.37pm respectively (GMT+11).
So much better imo.
Winter solstice sunrise in Melbourne is 7:36 AM and sunset 5:08 PM which would move to 8:36 AM and 6:08 PM with +11 UTC.
Yep, this was my argument against it down south too. Winter sunrises are already quite late in Melbourne, most people have commenced their morning commute by 7:30am when the sun is only rising. Hence all the complaints about DST running too long into April.
I feel like it starts about the right time when the sunrises are getting into the pre-6am territory, but probably needs to end around mid-March when the sunrises start creeping back up later.
And here in SEQ, it just needs to happen…
I go off civil twilight given thats what most people would consider sunlight.
Civil twilight for Melbourne is listed as starting at 7:06 AM
That is like asking why Singapore is so clean compared to ours, I always ask myself why do our inner city streets have to be so filthy with graffiti and disused objects, and I get the same answer you gave - different culture, there are inherent differences from birth that give rise to different outcomes and acceptabilities within each society.
Can you not change culture or do you think it is something that cannot change?
