Cricket television rights 2018 (Foxtel/Seven)

The difference between the two offers wasn’t $40 million - it was more like $222 million ($1.182 billion) - $240 million ($1.2 billion) depending on which newspaper’s figures you accept

That’s contra and other production services included. Eg 200 million to produce the clean feed for both networks.

I don’t think we’ll see Bruce McAvaney.

he seems to be winding down these days.

I don’t think we see enough of Hamish McLachlan fumble and bumble his way through presentation of sporting events. No doubt Seven will inflict him on sports lovers far more than is necessary.

Or rugby league gossip. As I recall that was his other area of expertise.

Same here. Awful commentators and absurdly over-the-top jingoism have long been a “feature” of 7’s coverage of most sporting events. I’m not looking forward to their take on cricket at all.

I am sure that Foxtel would have tried to wrangle a deal even if Ten was the FTA broadcaster - and they why is simple - Foxtel NEEDS a Summer sport as much as any of the FTA networks - especially the commercial networks. I think CA could have wrangled between $240 to $300 million out of them for access to other events. This is provided that TEN didnt enforce and exclusivity clause.

I doubt he’ll be on the coverage. Of all sports, don’t think I’ve seen him involved with or express love for cricket ever before.

Seven management seem to adore him though, you’re right. I feel he is a better host than a Mel McLaughlin-type though, at least Hamish can ad lib and knows his stuff (well, certain stuff anyway). The latter of which we’ll probably see back on BBL?

(Mel the other night couldn’t even spit out a sentence, eventually just waving her arms and throwing to Richo who is equally as painful - maybe that’s why Seven dumped them to late night?)

Not really. His ‘ad libbing skills’ on Australian Spartan and the Olympic Games were woeful and he doesn’t know anything about the sports (enough for him to be qualified as host) . Hope he stays well away from any forms of sports broadcast…forever.

What I meant was, it’s clear he doesn’t always just stick to an autocue like Johanna Griggs.

Jim Wilson is good at ad libbing and general sport banter / facts too, but he is too loud, over the top and drools over his own network. No thanks.

Todd and Joh have been my favourite hosts, so good. I think Hamish has pressure of prime-time too, which he always seems to host with whatever sport.

Could we see Johanna Griggs hosting Seven’s WBBL coverage with Jim Wilson / Mel McLaughlin hosting test and BBL coverage?

A-League doesn’t rate at all on Fox Sports in summer and they need a premium sport to keep subscribers during the footy offseason

Didn’t they just get cricket?

I’m sure Patrick Delaney would be busy on the phone talking to Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Mel Jones, Damien Fleming, Mark Waugh, Mark Howard, Roz Kelly, Andy Maher, and Kevin Pieterson convincing them to join the Fox team for the BBL.

Fleming and Waugh have been with Fox years before they started freelancing at Ten so they’ll be welcomed back with open arms.

Adam Gilchrist is a very strong presenter so I think Seven will snap him up to lead their coverage (Brendan Julian has had that slot down on Fox for years).

Ponting might be more difficult to lock down, it depends on how altruistic he is whether he chooses Pay TV or FTA (he will get offers from both).

I can see Andy Maher will host a Front Bar summer edition during the BBL, not sure where Roz will end up.

Mark Howard has been with Ten for a long time and still has plenty of work to do with RPM, MotoGP and occasional Supercars coverage. It would be big if he left, I suspect he’d fit the brand stronger at 7.

Kevin Pieterson has worked for Fox, Nine and Ten (the last two at the same time) so he could go either way. He’ll probably keep his options open and go between boxes.

Brendan Julian will lead the Fox team, with Gilly doing that on 7.

Getting some early practice in tonight?

One of the issues i have with Hamish- at least on AFL is that he doesn’t show excitement when there is a great goal or mark, like late in a match.

If this is true, Ten have grounds to sue Cricket Australia for breach of contract.

A ‘handshake or verbal’ agreement constitute a contract under Australian law.

Nine to broadcast next year’s Australian Open tennis?

Buzz Rothfield wrote in The Sunday Telegraph today that Seven could sell the rights to the 2019 Australian Open to Nine for $50 million. I prefer Seven show the Open one last time, just like 2001 when Seven showed the AFL before it went to Nine, Ten and Foxtel.
