COVID-19: Brisbane, SEQ and/or QLD Lockdowns

40 minutes into the purge. I’m really fucking bored.

2021 and you’re saying that. Don’t you have any home based hobbies?

Try doing it for 4 months, but in a harder lockdown.

Supermarkets have imposed limits again… did Brisbane just have fingers in their ears for the past 12 months?

It could be worse. I have a friend who was here for the 4 month lockdown. And has just moved to brisbane. Let’s stop with the my lockdown was harder than yours and be supportive of everyone through these tough times. A snap change to routine has huge consequences for ones mental health. And Mat if you need to chat we are all here for you and there are plenty of resources to help you out as well.

Flew back to SA from the Gold Coast today, spent 5 days in Brisbane beforehand, had to have a Covid test upon arrival at Adelaide Airport, got to have another one on Wednesday. The stick up the nose and down the throat wasn’t as bad a I thought it would be.

Tonight’s front page of The Courier-Mail

QLD - 0 new cases overnight. 21 active cases. High compliance with mask wearing reported. 14,000 + tests.

A woman had flown into Queensland from Victoria who is positive with the UK strain. She was tested in Victoria had was released after 10 days. Was tested again in Queensland and is still excreting virus. Usually low risk but the new strain means they are being ultra cautious.

Close contacts of cleaner are now at 91 who are in all quarantine. This is the most critical aspect of the response. The 3 day lockdown is being used to get these contacts into quarantine.

Police are not fining people for wearing a mask - they are offering masks. 3 people have still refused to wear the masks and have been fined.

The new UK variant has already caused changes to the response according to today’s conference. The Victorian woman who flew to Queensland quarantined in Victoria and left after the designated period having shown no symptoms for 3 days. She was not tested at that time. This is because people can still be shedding virus 100+ days after not being a threat to the community. She was tested in Queensland when it was belatedly discovered she had the UK strain. Now in Queensland, mandatory testing before back in the community plus genome testing upon entering quarantine.

I don’t think this is right. Such short notice and people have been told to stay. What if people have to get home? Or don’t have the money to pay for accommodation for longer. These border closures are really harsh.

Out of curiosity how does this help stop the spread? Wouldn’t it just start to make the mask ineffective?

A mask is not effective if you are driving on your own. It’s another matter if you are carrying your family or relatives though.

And how will they even know this. They could say they have been on the Gold Coast etc.

It may not be necessary if there is nobody else in your car but it doesn’t change the effectiveness. Wearing it reduces the risk of catching it from and spreading it to others.

Means you’re more likely to keep your mask on once outside the vehicle too, therefore touching your mask/your face less etc.

DHHS officials would greet the returning Victorians, ask them some questions and advise them on the quarantine procedures.

Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley said at the midday press conference:

My advice is flights from any of the five local government areas are being met by authorised officers and representatives of DHHS and being advised as per the now applicable orders now in place arising from National Cabinet, that is, go home, get tested, and stay-at-home until 6pm on Monday, when further advice will be provided, that was the outcome of National Cabinet and I know, from personal experience, that that precisely has been what has been happening at Melbourne Airport today.

Having said that, some Victorians were able to fly from Brisbane to Melbourne Airport this morning.

You’re right. There’s nothing wrong with wearing it everywhere rather if it prevents touching.

I was in a shopping centre yesterday and saw a girl pull down her mask to talk to someone on her mobile while continuing to walk around.

Also saw a bogan and his girlfriend not wearing a mask loudly telling off a Coles staff member because he was told he needed to wear a mask next time he came back.

I don’t think Victoria in their deepest lockdown stage had mandatory masks in cars for people driving themselves or their family. That’s just overkill.
