ARN puts me in mind of the “too many chiefs and not enough Indians” saying
Just 3 weeks after his role as SCA’s Head of Broadcast News was made redundant, James Joyce has joined ARN’s Melbourne newsroom in a yet-to-be specified role.

Chief “People” Officer? What, both of them ? Looking after Kyle AND Jackie would be a big job
Nova CEO Peter Charlton appointed chair of CRA
Commercial Radio and Audio (CRA) has appointed Peter Charlton, Nova’s chief executive officer, as chair of the industry body. He replaces former ARN boss Ciaran Davis, who stepped down after three years in the role.
Rowland Paterson, was re-elected as vice chair of regional – a role he has held since 2022.
The rest of the board is comprised of Ben Campbell and Michael Harvey from ARN; Sarah Tinsley and John Kelly from SCA; Peter Colosimo from Nova; Greg Cupitt from Super Radio Network; Rachel Launders and Tom Malone from Nine; and Rowland Paterson of ACE Radio.
The Mediaweek article was updated this morning to include a statement from ARN CEO Michael Stephenson, part of which said:
ARN has been evolving its content operations since late 2022 as we continue to build a business that’s ready for the future. As part of the next phase, we’re reorganising our Audience & Content function to separate our core content teams from the support teams, allowing us to focus more clearly on creating and delivering great content. This restructure includes the role of Chief Content Officer, who will have sole responsibility for content creation and distribution.
As a result of these changes, Joyce will leave ARN at the end of 2025. Lauren is an incredible strategist and respected leader who has made a significant contribution to ARN over the past seven years.
I have a feeling ARN isn’t long for this world. I really do think it’s going to go under or be taken over.
Given the imminent merger of Seven & SCA, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nine are looking to do the same with ARN, at least once they sold off their AM stations. ![]()
They could even do it before they sell the AM stations, as long as they commit to selling them within a certain timeframe. Although the rumours I keep reading are that Nine is after Nova. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they went after ARN too, as long as they weren’t too spooked by K&J’s ridiculous contract.
ARN will likely implode based on that $200m flop.
Mark my words. That $200m deal is the worst deal in Australian radio since SCA let K&J walk from 2DayFM.
I do wonder how good their books and debt are. They may end up in insolvency.
Bad. In three years, they will have burnt through their cash reserves.

I agree. I don’t think they’ll survive.
They may end up in insolvency.
I am not an insolvency law expert, but if insolvent, I wonder if they can get out of paying K and J the millions.
ARN restructure the businesses and rise again.
News Corp sells its 13% stake in ARN Media
A News Corp spokesperson told The Australian that the “divestment in ARN continues our focus on our core consumer businesses and our digital client products.”
The stake sale is worth around 18 million dollars.
They’ve commandered a lifeboat and getting out of the SS ARNitanic.
ARN reduces its interest in SCA
The Australian Financial Review have reported that Barrenjoey Capital Markets have significantly increased their interest in Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) after a trade with ARN. $14.3 million worth of shares were traded at 75¢, down from the last close price of 81¢ and from the $1.08 premium per share that ARN bought them for in the first place.
ARN desperate for cash by the sounds of it.
