Community Television

They produce very little content themselves so they have little to share, it’s all individual producers and organisations. The producers want to get the content on as many stations as possible but that usually excludes WTV which airs a lot of copyrighted material like Disney films in prime time.

That’s such a vague wording to ask for money - if a station can be “saved” with as little as $30,000 they either don’t need it, or they are going bankrupt soon. What on earth is a “new operation” and how much could you possibly buy with so little cash?

Looks like WTV Perth are gone…

As a producer which broadcasts on their channel, nice to be told… :frowning:

That place has never been run well, they’ve aired Disney films in prime time instead of local content and weren’t interested in connecting with the community.

Yet you’re given an almost better time slot and arguably way more viewers in Melbourne, says it all.

Wholeheartedly agree. Always been a shame to me.

I can’t anything about the “Disney movies” thing and need a list of which ones have been broadcast. Or are you having a “All animation is Disney” feeling @TVHead?

This thread shows that Bambi was one movie. When I looked at the schedule last week they had some 20th Century Fox movies planned, and these would have come from Disney.

The crew that ran WTV were exiled from Access 31 for probably the same reasons…

Wait… so the people responsible for the failure of Access 31 were let into WTV??

Not sure, but Tibor has been around for yonks.

Not in this article though.

From Wikipedia:

At 5pm AWST on 6 August 2008, Access 31 ceased transmission after both the Lotterywest grant and the private contribution was withdrawn. CEO Andrew Brine had resigned the previous day, the station unable to pay his salary.

The WTV folks tried to do a lot of things during the Access 31 days, and they were always considered to be a little… out there.

Was a nominee in the 2004 Antenna Awards (link) for his work at Access 31, so he was definitely around.

The FB post is gone now, change of heart or just mismanagement?

Federal government calls time on community television (again)

Former C31 Melbourne General Manager Matt Field (via Twitter):

This is a tragic situation. Over the last 6 years @C31Melbourne has foregone around $3.5m in lost revenue due to needless uncertainty. The gov provided a grant of $90k in 2014 - and a series of chaotic short term extensions that kept the sector on life support

The sector has had a single meeting with the Minister in the last 4 years. The fact is that there is no VOD business model for CTV that wouldn’t result in the failure of all stations. This is a fact. The sector has tried to communicate this to no avail.

There are two solutions - a long term extension or adequate funding to transition. The first option has no implications in terms of spectrum use and costs the Govt nothing. The second option cost significantly more to be successful and result in reduced local conten

…and reduced opportunities for emerging TV talent. I really hope @PaulFletcherMP agrees to meet with the remaining two stations to truly understand the issues and arrive at a solution that doesn’t result in the loss of CTV for good. (ends)

The chances of the federal government funding one is zero, I think. Both stations have put videos on YouTube, but most have under 100 views with less than half having more than that. I wonder if YouTube could work for them, if that was what they concentrated on?

What a fuck up again, it costs the government No money to keep these on air
