Community Radio

To be honest I have no idea how they do it, maybe yes, there will be info out there somewhere on the internet how they do it. I don’t need to know how it’s done, it’s only of interest & I don’t have time to go searching for it right now though.

I’m not sure however, if maybe there’s a similar thing in the DAB mux coding to TI or Traffic Info on FM RDS where they can just send that code out on the DAB channel 9A, 9B & 9C for example, & all DAB receivers will switch to a “Traffic Announcement Channel” to hear the announcement?

Read this article today with sadness:

@ethirkill45 was a member here for some time, often talking about and spruiking his beloved 101FM. I have to confess though, I had no idea he had been involved in the game for so long.

May he rest in peace.

From 88.9fm Tamworths Facebook page

88.9FM IS SADLY SAYING GOODBYE TO AN OLD FRIEND…

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has informed Tamworth Broadcasting Society Inc., operator of Radio 88.9fm and 96.3fm, that the Liverpool Plains transmitter frequency will change due to government reallocation. Starting November 15, 2024, the frequency will shift from 96.3fm to 99.5fm. Further updates will follow.

The audio on Connect FM Bankstown 100.9 FM is totally odd.

The announcer parts sound fine, but any music is totally skewed to the right channel and sounds very muffled.

Edit: Seems okay again now.

Is there anyone here who can check out the transmitted spectrum of Noosa FM (4NSA) on 101.3 on Queensland’s Sunny Coast?

Every time I listen the audio is distorted. Doesn’t matter what the program content is, or time of day.

It also sounds quite a bit louder than other stations in the area. Which makes me think it’s overmodulating.

I’ve also tried a number of different radios. Some sound worse that others, but all sound distorted. I don’t know how the volunteers working there can listen to it in their cars or home. At the studio, the off air audio must sound a lot worse than the console output. Or they never monitor off air.

Someone here might even have a frequency agile Belar or TFT mod monitor. But I’m sure a look at the spectrum will reveal if there’s a problem.

Thanks in advance!

Wow - sounds unlistenable today. Haven’t noticed it that bad before. Audio level is way to high and loud.

Does this help. Audio spectrum

Noosa FM

This is adjacent station 101.5

Noosa FM sounds better this morning; slightly too loud but not distorted.

I have posted previously how the waveform is flat on the SDR waterfall

Thanks so much @TV.Cynic ! It confirms my suspicions. Be interesting to know how much they were, and probably still are, over-deviating.

If it sounds a little better to you today, maybe someone at Noosa FM saw our posts.

The awful audio has been going on for a long time now.

Still sounds horribly over modulated tonight.

I was at the Hit 101.3 Gosford transmitter site this morning, doing an inspection on the Coast FM transmitter rack, & noted that the modulation meter on the front of Todays Country 94.1 transmitter was maxing out & barely dropping in level.

Unlike the Nautel & some other transmitters, the RVR transmitter meter isn’t marked as to the level, except at the 100% modulation/75KHz deviation point, so at a guess they’d be modulating at 145-160% possibly more on the transmitter, & I’d say any less than that on air, the channel filter on the combiner is stopping it from going too far into the adjacent channels, top & bottom.

Unfortunately this is pretty normal for them & has been like or at similar levels to this going back (5 plus?) years, & they don’t seem to care about it, but they’re wasting a lot of power that’s ether blocked & converted to heat in the combiner, or just can’t be used by a radio receiver.

I think it’s worse now than it was 6-12 months ago. The over deviation at + or - 200 khz is really really bad.

2RPH Newcastle 100.5 still off air, first noticed it around 11am yesterday as per log in DX thread. Have you heard what’s going on there by chance?

Just on a related topic matter, but for another station; 94.5 FBi. I’ve noted past couple of
days that during high modulation loud levels that FBi’s bandwidth is extending out to 470kHz, speech is fine re BW generally though.
I’m not sure if this is coincided with their loss of RDS. :man_shrugging:
@anon71206228 Have you or anyone heard any gossip as to what is going on with their loss of RDS over at the Gore Hill BAI site?

Answer to both those questions is, I haven’t heard anything about or any reason for either issue.
