Thought the show looked terrific. KC is a great interviewer. Really strong interviews.
agree, I really liked the actual content of the show and thought Kaitlan did a great job
just not sure whatâs up with their graphics department atmâŠ
Any caps of this?
newscasts story: 'The Source' debuts with oddball look - NewscastStudio
Very messy scheduling yesterday over at CNN: the 5pm hour was given last night to The Situation Room, as Jake Tapper is away on holiday (The Lead aired for only an hour with Kaitlan Collins, first time presenting it as cover), and and Wolf was touting an âexclusive interviewâ with Benjamin Netanyahu (over the news of the last few weeks there), something also relevant with International viewers. However, the first 25 minutes was a Zucker-style panel over the Trump exploits and their legal consequences, before airing the first part of the interview. However, CNNI broke away to air World Sport from London, whilst CNN continued airing the second part of the interview and other US-specific content. This meant CNNI viewers didnât see the second part of the interview.
However, things began to change as more charges for Donald Trump were announced (an eventual third indictment), and The Situation Room switched to Breaking News mode, with a 7-box split screen with 9 people (including pundits). The Trump charges preempted the rest of the normal rundown, and we might see more of the Trump indictment dominating todayâs scheduling, plus increased overlap of schedules and extended coverage in the days to come.
Variety has published this long read, another take on how the Licht strategy was doomed from the beginning, plus additional insider details on Zuckerâs possibility to take back the network, which, according to Variety, might need the help of Saudi investorsâŠ
This quote from no one less important than Katie Couric sums up the mess happening currently at the network, plus David Zaslavâs continued opportunity to make it a âdown-the-middleâ outlet.
âItâs incredibly challenging in the current media environment to be a down-the-middle network,â says Katie Couric [âŠ] âAs the slices of the pie get smaller and smaller, itâs more important than ever to have an engaged audience that may be more interested in affirmation than information. I think thatâs why thereâs so much commentary on cable. It would take a truly brilliant programmer to figure out how CNN could once again become a town square with different perspectives on important, complex issues. And even then, Iâm not convinced people would even want to watch that in this hyper-partisan world. Itâs a huge conundrum.â
This article has been ripped to shreds by basically everyone and condemmed as basically fiction.
Wish theyâd lock in their anchor lineup
And they have now:
Surprised to see King Charles (still terrible name) still getting aired after Licht being ousted - wasnât that a pet project of his?
Good move to have Phil Mattingly as Poppyâs co-host. From the time his âtemporaryâ stint began, his great chemistry with Poppy was what the show refreshly needed. However, the show lacks something about it, including name recognition and a format that sticks and is different from its competitors.
As for the new primetime and weekend schedule, I think they are trying to do an MSNBC by mixing hard news shows with opinion slots and/or segments. I find the appointment of Abby Philip for the new prime time news hour as appealing. Yes, her experience in the core Politics panel is very great, but, as anchor, she will have time to develop. In contrast, putting Kasie Hunt as Christine Romansâ replacement and the demotion of Alisyn Camerota as Chief Correspondent for The Whole Story are totally wrong moves.
Replacing one day per week Kaitlan with King Charles is a bad move too (thankfully is a limited series). Cutting one hour of the Washington slot of CNN News Central in favor of Pamela Brown, however, is a no brainer, and I think Brownâs promotion is well deserved for her.
Weekends are trying to ape MSNBC too, with personality-led shows, and thatâs how Victor Blackwell, Chris Wallace, Amanpour and Manu Raju are fitting there. And it is the first time CNN is having its proper weekend schedule, after years of endless Newsroom. Yes, they still have Newsroom in the afternoons and repeat during middays, but I think it is the start for something more promising.
Coinciding with this⊠the real graphics alteration pursued by the temporary leadership is finally on-air on the Domestic CNN (CNNI remains on the temp design for now) after weeks of delay. A mix of Zucker-style layout with the Licht super designs. And finally, the ticker is back:
Picture from Pres Café
Iâm a big advocate for Phil, heâs great.
Also surely they will go with something like King/Charles
Or King & Charles?
Shocking name if youâre naming it after a monarch if you donât do the separation.
Theyâve changed it havenât they.
The fixes look better than the original look, I do wish theyâd change the Location/Time bug, looks messy stacked like that.
Inconsistency between CNNI and CNN/US has started to show up after they debuted the updated Zuckerised graphics. As the newsbar disappeared from both outlets to show its hurricane alert graphic (which has been completely redesigned for the first time since 2011) due to the observance of Hurricane Hillary in the West Coast, during the start of the Domestic simulcast of CNNI overnight programming, the new bug overlapped with the super:
Over at CNNI, the DOG was the one they use for recorded programming:
Later on, CNN/US switched to the CNNI DOG (still not properly aligned). Later, the problem was fixed, and CNNI began showing the live marker on its DOG after some time:
When CNN/US-produced programming went on-air, proper corrections were made finally, with both the hurricane tracker and the super being slotted into the DOG:
But, the visual inconsistency over at CNN/US leads to unfilled space:
Another thing that CNN brought back with the Zuckerised Licht graphics is the too enormous and detached promotional âboxâ to announce their original long-form series:
I am over CNN
Like many other companies right now, they need to continue on their spiral and hit rock bottom to wake up to themselves.
This current leadership looks like a group of boomers obsessed with their âgloryâ days
Their new primetime lineup is uncharismatic and boring at best.
Licht had actually done a good job of redesigning the graphics. But alas, now they look mutated.
I would still rather watch CNN than Fox news Or Sky News Tbh.
I hear CNN / WBD is considering the former head of BBC and NYT as Lichtâs replacement.
Could be a good idea actually⊠he has extensive experience running global news organisations, and understands both TV and digital channels.
