CNN

Best of both worlds I suppose? Actually prefer it like that.

argh the one thing i liked about the new graphics was that they got away from having to stretch the text like this

The report did mention it would take about 2 to 3 weeks to change it over so wouldnā€™t be surprised if it completely reverts eventually

Yep, being honest, anything can happen. I might also expect such, to a complete reversal of the changes made by Licht. Some of these scenarios (or transition stages) could happen:

  • Retain these tweaks as they are
  • As before, but with the ticker instead of a flipper
  • As before, but with the bug back into a larger LIVE marker
  • Back to the former graphics disposition, but retain the Licht-era super designs (with tweaks)
  • Full reversal

Now to the ongoing management messā€¦ Zaslav is planning to retain Entelis, Sherling and Moseley as temporary executives until the 2024 election. According to Dylan Byers, who has been covering all the mess for Puck News, Zaslav is also planning to sell the network eventually in the long-term, but plans havenā€™t been finalised.

And, according to the New York Post (yes, take it with a huge pinch of salt), Zucker is already in line to buy it (hoping not):

Looks a lot better though wish they bought back the use of the CNN logo instead of just writing CNN on things like reporter titles.

the emerging iteration of CNN is reporting the news in a bolder, unbridled way. It appears more muscular, confident, and unafraid to speak up.

excuse me, what

Well, from the article (which is a part of Oliver Darcyā€™s Reliable Sources newsletter), it looks like CNN is trying to transfer the fast-paced News Central format and story selection into its entire normal schedule, whilst fully covering ā€œBreaking Newsā€ big stories when it is strongly needed.

One such change is the more selective nature of stories it covers on air. Licht relentlessly preached to staffers to ā€œwiden the apertureā€ on stories the network covered on an hourly basis. The approach resulted in programs that were reminiscent of the old Headline News, with shows throwing everything but the kitchen sink at viewers. Viral trending stories and weather forecasts were weaved into show rundowns, put on par with the actual, consequential stories of the day.

Without Licht at the helm, CNN has gone back to its roots, choosing instead to focus on the biggest stories of the day. In the last few weeks, CNN has provided viewers with critical wall-to-wall coverage of Donald Trumpā€™s arraignment on federal charges in Florida, the Titan submersible tragedy, and the abandoned insurrection in Russia.

And, according to Darcy (who, ironically, didnā€™t cite a reliable source), CNN has taken a big increase in the demo figures in the US:

The strategy of swarming the biggest stories with the unmatched resources of CNN appears to be resonating with viewers. In prime time last week, CNN topped the cable news ratings race for the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic on Wednesday through Friday, a major turnaround from just a month ago when the network had occasionally fallen behind Newsmax.

That is quite not right, however: on Thursday, CNN trailed Fox News in the demo, whilst still third in normal ratings, but otherwise, a big improvement, which sees there is still an audience for straightforward breaking news.

On Thursday, Fox News averaged 1.43 million viewers throughout the day, compared to 996,000 for MSNBC and 706,000 for CNN. In the 25-54 demo for total day viewers, Fox News averaged 184,000, compared to 179,000 for CNN and 124,000 for MSNBC. The audiences were slightly higher than on Wednesday.

In primetime, Fox News averaged 1.88 million, compared to 1.52 million for MSNBC and 859,000 for CNN. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 193,000, tied with CNN at 193,000. MSNBC averaged 155,000.

In the midst of this ongoing mess, David Bohrman, the creator of The Situation Room and the driving force behind CNNā€™s unique election coverage methods (including its Magic Wall), died Sunday aged 69, after hip surgery complications.

an absolute jokeā€¦ the CNN staff act like children rebelling against a relief teacher

grow up and appreciate the need for NEWS and JOURNALISM, without left leaning bias or overhyped wall to wall coverage and unrelenting Breaking News banners.

I think they mean it in literal sense :joy:

A side note: Seems like their sister channel HLN has a new on-screen logo.

ITN called, they want their old logo backšŸ˜

The problem with that is itā€™s increasingly unpopular and unprofitable

This is as much an audience problem as it is a network problem.

And we all lose as an outcome.

we need a CNN in Australia

perhaps Sky News could be less right wing and fill the void :innocent:
just do a nice graphics refresh, get some better set designers, and cut the extremist shows. :white_check_mark:
and invest heavily in the news side of things

So just dump the whole thing then? :stuck_out_tongue: You might as well start from scratch.

I think it would have been great if theyā€™d established a local version many years ago (even a combined Australia/NZ), but might struggle now.

Yeah, Iā€™m not sure how it would happen to be honest. Pay tv non-streaming is basically dyeing over hear. They really need to be taken over by some one and they need it to happen now other wise there will be no chance at all of this happening.

haha to be fair, their dayside is pretty decent.

Better still merge the CNN Philippines version into an Asia-Pacific wide version

True.

But WBD has ordered $100m in cuts from CNN

Cory cutting is accelerating at a faster pace than expected. And CNN must find itā€™s way in a streaming world where people now get news from YouTube and video Tik Tok

The reality is the train has left the station and it canā€™t come back - the days of news being news and not some kind of shouty, highly targeted opinion-laden telling of current events are sadly over. Every news outlet is trying to find what kind of output works for them at ever lowering cost, meanwhile, these shifts have direct input into some significant real-world consequences.

While it makes sense to chase the audience on places like YouTube and TikTok - algorithm-driven platforms are not particularly conducive to quality news reporting - weā€™ve already seen some of this.

The future of news is a real challenge without the need to deliver it for peanuts.
