Strange issue with ABC grandstand saying double JJ in the car. Could not fix it. Other radios seem ok.

It’s a shame but it seems like Sony is no longer selling head units with DAB+, leaving Kenwood and Pioneer as the only choices.

I much prefer Sony’s head unit designs (at least the ones with touchscreens).

DJ Cazzah’s post about shortwave on his car radio prompted me to look at the specs of his purchase.

Outdated digital radio promotion here:
https://www.kenwood.com/au/car/receiver/dpx-7100dab/

Claims to have a digital radio tuner yet no mention of it in the specification page via that link.

AM appears to have a disappointing upper limit of 1602 kHz. Can that be adjusted with technical/IT know how? @Dj_Cazzah, does yours tune to 1710 kHz?

Hopefully in coming weeks, @Dj_Cazzah can provide feedback on selectivity (ie. adjacent station reception) and how sensitive the reception is (fringe reception).

I was actually surprised when I had a look through, it does go up to 1701. Also yes it does have a DAB tuner. Only disappointing thing is that it misses a chunk of the shortwave band where mine starts at 9500 instead of 9400 in the 31 metre band. As for performance, the MW performance is quite good, I was picking up stations from SA, ACT and NSW quite clear without any static at all, I haven’t really tested FM yet but DAB+ seems to work great, and last but not least the shortwave tuner doesn’t seem too sensitive however It’s only using a stock car antenna for it and has picked up Radio New Zealand, Radio Thailand and China Radio quite fine with no static at all. Everything seems to work fine and it is a very good purchase. I might head up to a mountain lookout later this afternoon and see if I can find anything interesting with it.

Here’s the screenshot of the frequency table from the manual available here

Thanks @Dj_Cazzah, much appreciated.

Just brought a Gen 2 Prius i-Tech, FM sounds great but AM sounds much worse (dull, muddy) than my old Camry. Possibly too aggressive on noise suppression?

Just took the time to set up all presets, quite hard with a third set of FM presets available to me:

The radio only shows what is there in terms of RDS, it does support PTY, alternative frequencies and Traffic Announcements though.

I like the satellite graphics, did not know AM/FM radio transmits from Satellites.

Anyone had any experience with something like this?

That’s crazy expensive. Might as well get a dedicated head unit for that money.

Well I brought it, I only really wanted to add DAB and not have to stream it off my phone. Getting a dedicated head unit is more far more costly (for DAB and Android Auto and the extras for steering wheel controls and being able to use the DSP that my Prius has).

My initial impressions is that it worked quite well out of the box, I didn’t need to have to attach the external antenna to the windscreen to pick up a signal and it worked happily all inside the centre console while driving from Ryda to Jaycar in Rydalmere with only one or two very small dropouts.

When I got to Jaycar I think I unfortunately made the mistake of attaching the antenna where it might be unsuitable(?). The antenna cable isn’t too long so I could’t place it on the passenger side as suggested and still keep the unit inside the centre console (the unit is intended to be windscreen mounted but I have no use for that). The 3M adhesive it comes with works quite well so I’m stuck with it for now. Luckily the external antenna is removable so I could just purchase another one.

I didn’t have any issues with using the unit itself, it’s all straightforward. The USB cable provided is quite long though.

To my surprise when testing the FM transmitter it actually broadcasts the station name with RDS!. No idea (yet) if it sends any other data as my car radio only displays station name.
It does drop the FM TX after 10-20 seconds of no DAB signal.

(95.0 was chosen after the unit did an auto scan, given the digital station I should have chosen 95.4 )

Any suggestions re: the antenna? It worked mostly fine until I got to Woolworths and it’s barely gotten a signal since.

The antenna should be fine where you have it, as that “shaded” area lets RF through & where things like that & toll tags, etc. are meant to go. The rest of the windscreen is probably metallic, & will make it harder to get any reception.

Not knowing what’s inside the antenna case, (I’m guessing just a dipole element), in which case it should be mounted vertically, not horizontally like you have, DAB+ is transmitted vertically polarized & you’ve just reduced your signal strength by 20dB or more by having it horizontal, remembering that 3db is half signal strength, 6db is 0.25 signal strength.

That’s a shame because it seems now to be very hard to remove. I’m not sure how much luck I’ll have with reattaching it to the windscreen.

Would it be better to grab one of these two?

Edit: It is now mounted vertically. Not much difference at the moment.

I wonder the RDS is there for dynamic frequency changes. So it will handover seamlessly if 95.0 get interference on FM and it locks in 87.5 for example.

When I had my old Getz with a similar internal aerial, I found some cigarette lighters to USB will interfere with the signal. In my Kia now with an external aerial no issues anymore.

I can’t test it 100% because I don’t have a small indoor antenna but did manage to just capture some brief RDS and AF was lit up (although no alt. frequencies were listed). It does push the song title and artist as radio text.

I have noticed that it’s quite poor at choosing the right frequency to transmit on, every time I get it to scan it gives a different set of frequencies, most already taken.

91.6 would be the best frequency in Sydney if there are no special event broadcasts. 89.5 is the next best but beware of pirates!

You can’t use a Aux out cable? If not, maybe with the old fashion tape deck adapter, I don’t think there is a CD to AUX available.

Manually select FM freq is better in my view.

108.0 might be ok too.

I can. The Prius has an aux in port. I was using that in the car with the FX TX turned off.

I know you brought it, but in the early days of DAB i brought a pure highway which is the same thing. the major issue i had was sensitivity. would drop out often even when going down hills. even had this issue on my old pioneer DAB+ head unit. only when i got my i30 with built in DAB did i start getting decent reception
