Looks like the same logo as Mount Gambiers channel 8!
I do believe that BTV6 and GMV6 had a very loose affiliation back then with SES8.
Interesting point. The Kangaroo Point site is still a favourite will all the stations for anything from weather to breakfast TV crosses - just to show you’re in Brisbane.
As seen tonight on Seven News - only reason for a report from that location is the backdrop
Update: And a bit later
Re first pic - normally you’d think they’d choose a location with the city skyline as the backdrop, not what looks to be Southbank.
Depends what the story is about, and everyone in QLD knows that location anyway…
i’m hearing BCC in conjunction in BOCOG may be looking at either putting a beauty cam there to send a live 24/7 feed to the broadcasters during the games or instituting a booking system
Would be good as a live backdrop in a studio.
they are obligated as part of the host duties to allow the installation of a number (4 or 5 springs to mind… its been a while since i read the tech docs for the olympics) of beauty cams around the city feeing live footage to the IBC - i suspect Kangaroo Point, The Story Bridge & The new casino (perhaps) are in play as sites
Question for our WA folk. Before the GWN days, where in Kalgoorlie was the original VEW8 studio? I know some places had their registered office seperate to the studio location (as was the case with NRN11 in Coffs Harbour), was VEW8 also the same in this regard?
VEW8 has interesting story that I only know a bit of - at one stage it provided programming for both Kalgoorlie and Geraldton and was actuated located in a temporary building at a Telecom R/T site east of Perth so it had access to the Telecom bearer north the Geraldton and east to Kalgoorlie. As I recall running it from Kalgoorlie wasn’t an option because all the westbound Telecom bearers were permanently in use by the TV stations in Perth. Apparently it was on air only from afternoon through to evenings and the operators used Sony U-matic tapes compiled with the evenings programs and commercials. The playout kit sounded like it may have been based on a three machine sequencer one of the techs from Loxton SA designed. I would like more info on the place myself.
From what I’ve read, VEW8 used one of the backup microwave bearers to send the signal to Kalgoorlie.
This is one of the beasts that transported it. The Kalgoorlie end:
Here are another two. Not sure which ones, but they’re of the 15 that are dotted between Perth and Kalgoorlie. 2 primary dishes,. 2 backup:
It is known as the ‘East-West Microwave Link’ and spans from Mt Yokine, Perth to Port Pirie, SA. Not much info about them out there, but I did make this custom Google Map showing each one based on Radcom data:
Great photos - part of the story I heard was the VEW8 playout facility was a glorified garden shed at the Telecom R/T(may have been Meckering or Mt Bakewell) site east of Perth and the ops had no facilities etc and needed a 4WD to get up there. The version I heard had them compiling the tapes from gear they had in a share house they lived in. Apparently once Telecom had more bearers available they moved to a house in Perth somewhere on a main road. Love to hear the correct version from one of the staffer’s if they are still alive (think it happened early 80’s). One reminder from that era I found was a memorial plaque up at the TV transmission site on Moresby Range(Geraldton) to one of the local TV techs who had passed on so there may have even been a TV studio in Geraldton at one stage.
GTW11 did have a studio in Geraldton. It was in the Wonthella Memorial Hall which is now a furniture store. There was a picture of the studio with a camera, lighting and sets a while back but it’s now gone into the ether.
Good lead - found a photo of the hall with microwave links up to Moresby Range. The station possibly went bust and VEW8 bought the licence, hence the playout having to go where Telecom’s bearers dictated?
@dutymainttech Some good info here courtesy of ex-technicians on a thread on Whirlpool Forum:
A wide angles view of the Nine News Sydney newsroom.
Did the Wyrrabalong Coastal walk today and got a pic of the Forresters Beach / Wyong DTV TX
The two yagis at the bottom must be to take the off air feed off 7, 9 and 10 from Sydney, though I wonder why they need two (one for Gore Hill maybe though they are both in virtually the same direction), and that neither yagi has reflectors on the rear end.
