Broadcast Facilities

Anyone who has ever worked in consumer electronics understands this, essentially the masses (especially older audiences) don’t give a shit about picture quality. I still remember just how many people watched stretched 4:3 analogue FTA on shiny new Plasmas and LCDs through the 2000s and were perfectly happy with it!

Ha! One of my pet peeves. Then they even mangled the picture through (mis)settings when they were forced to watch the digital equivalents

This is why the HD channels should be on the main numbers, not 70 etc.

It’s 2020. I’m sure most people have MPEG4 now.

Whenever I setup a TV for someone I would modify the channels so HD is on the main SD channel number. You can do this on Sony and some other branded TVs.

I’ve just hidden all the SD versions of the channels that are in HD.

I seem to remember, from one of the anniversary specials 10 made years ago, that they mentioned 10 had a policy of destroying/not keeping footage for a number of decades.

Meanwhile, if the networks did all eventually decide to relocate away from Mt Coot-tha, it would be nice if they kept one of the studios as a museum. I can’t imagine there would be too many original television studios left in the country once those three go…

The old BCM MCR, which by the looks of those monitors, isn’t really active much now (since NPC Media started operating in Sydney). I thought this entire set-up at Docklands would’ve been dismantled, wonder what they’re using it for now?

Since Seven Sport’s operations are based there, especially the AFL, maybe they use it/need it for broadcasting

From tonight’s news, a story on whether to keep the AFL GF at night or not, an interview with Seven Melbourne boss Lewis Martin.

Don’t forget Seven News Melbourne still comes out of that building. And other studio productions such as The Front Bar and Armchair Experts along with AFL panel shows such as AFL Gameday and Talking Footy if they ever come back next year. Most Seven Sport is still gatewayed through that building including AFL, Horse Racing and Cricket. Therefore a Master Control presence is still very much required at 7BCM. The only change is they no longer look after transmission, that was outsourced to the Nine/Seven JV NPC Media Pty Ltd last year.

The SBS program “Great British Railway Jouneys” did a piece on the first radio transmitter site in Scotland tonight.

Westerglen was chosen because of its ability to cover both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Tranmits 4 AM stations and 1 LW station.

They should have an open day for the public to visit.

I recall as a child going to the HSV7 open day at the old South Melbourne HSV studios (now NEP studios). Would have been around 1995 or 1996.

They had sets open to the public for Blue Heelers and “the World’s Greatest Commercials” (the show hosted by Andrew Daddo at the time).

I also recall John Deeks did the self-paced tour via pre-recorded videos displaying on monitors in each part of the studio.

Would be great to tour a studio today once the pandemic is over. I recall that the ABC did it for school groups pre-covid.

The ABC did Open House Melbourne last year so good chance they will again when things get back to normal.

They’re wasting no time, certain areas of the site will start to be demolished from this weekend, including the iconic cottages.

Really? GTV9 had a much better send off. Pitty

Might have to apply for an interim heritage order so an in depth heritage assessment can be carried out on the site. That or we gather a posse of media spy nerds, meet at Willoughby and chain ourselves to the cottages so they can’t be demolished.
