It’s baffling - since then they’ve signed two multi-year deals guaranteeing it at Christmas Day slot.
Whilst it wasn’t to everyones taste the early series were genuinely refreshing and initial Christmas specials did really well on Boxing Day one year and I think Christmas Eve another so it deserved it’s shot on Christmas Day - but not every year for over a decade. Never been a fan of a series just existing to put out a Christmas special once a year.
I think 2026 is the last year on the deal so hopefully the BBC finally pull the plug. However they quickly need to find new comedy hits to fill the gaps - there isn’t even anything else from the last 10-15 years they can revive now Gavin and Stacey is done.
I suspect though if this years Outnumbered special on Boxing Day does well it might get a Christmas Day slot next year - it doesn’t seem the sort of show you revive without the intention of doing more. Not Going Out had been a staple on Christmas Eve for a few years too but hasn’t done a Christmas special since 2022 now so that’s another possibility for Christmas Day next year.
The fact it’s on at the rather off-broadway slot of 11.05pm might suggest they are riding out the current deal and 2026 will be the end of it.
Surely everyone has fallen asleep from drink or a food coma by 11pm on Christmas Night?
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has said she is “prepared to take further action” if the media industry cannot address “cultures of silence and issues being swept under the rug” in relation to claims of misconduct.
Appearing before the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Tuesday, Ms Nandy spoke about recent questions of behaviour, including those around MasterChef host Gregg Wallace, who has stepped back from the hit cooking show as production company Banijay UK investigates allegations of misconduct.
I wonder who’s delivering the alternative Christmas message this year… should be good.
Dr Who - good.
Mrs Brown’s Boys - plus good.
Wallace and Gromit - doubleplus good.
What’s wrong with the ‘K’ on their &eyboard?
Notice that many programs have brief credits too. Nice.
Hey, some of us enjoy that sort of comedy. Dont judge me.
I’m looking forward to Gavin & Stacey
I suppose it’s the modern equivalent of going to the video store snd having staff recommendations. Like Vincent’s picks.
Such a Boomer thing to say.
Well the new Wallace and Gromit movie was the best bit of Christmas Day TV in years. Just perfect.
Gavin and Stacey also a triumph.
The Royal Variety Performance aired on ABC TV last night.
