Bondi Shopping Centre Incident

An out-of-court settlement was very much in Seven’s interest, it would be particularly difficult to argue anything other than “we fucked up”. If I was Cohen I’d be trying to cause some pain on the countless braindead morons on X that spread the misinformation too

Will be interesting to see if ACMA investigates - this isn’t the first time they’ve named someone accused of a terrible crime without any evidence. This shouldn’t pass without consequence

I hope he got a good payout! This was disgusting by Seven whether people remember his name or not. Slack reporting by the channel who think their reporting is top notch. A bit shocked by all the apologists for Seven on here. How would any of you feel if they’d named you?

The understatement of the year!

It might not have been malicious, but in their ambitious thirst to be first with the breaking news… they chose to just go for it without vetting everything properly. And the end result is them looking like Mr Bean slipping on a banana peel.

I hope he got a decent payout due to Seven’s incompetence. But I would say the reputation harm coming from the recent issues with Spotlight they needed this to quietly disappear. But that is no excuse for destroying the reputation of a young man and he deserves to be compensated generously due to this. The fact is it was broadcast to a significant amount of people who will communicate with others adding to the reach impacting his life significantly for years. I hope ACMA also investigate and the person who approved the airing of their name is dealt with appropriately and if they followed Seven’s procedures that they are reviewed. If they did follow proper procedures that they are not thrown under the bus at that the more senior personal that approved the policy take appropriate responsibility for the mistake.

Destroying the reputation of the young man? I really think you’re being over dramatic here. Nobody would know this guys name or would notice him if they walked down the street beside him. Yes, what Seven did was wrong. Did they ruin his life? No. He’s not going to be mistaken for anyone due to the fact the killer is dead. The fact everyone knows.

Seven need to understand that is a real possibility. If it was up to me they will be fined millions of dollars as a result and their broadcasting privileges put on notice.

You are very harsh.

Because of his name Social Media also made it racist and anti-semitic. Hope ACMA take seven to task.

Social media reported/ spread his name before Seven did. The platforms there are as equally to blame.

They settled. The guy wouldn’t have settled if he thought he was owed more.

I’d go even harsher, I’d be putting Seven on probation with another instance of bringing themselves into disrepute in the next 12 months being a 3-day licence suspension (i.e. off the air for 3 days).

This young man’s life and the lives of his family were placed in grave danger by Seven’s error (along with the social media doxxing especially on the cesspit that calls itself X these days), all it would have taken is one more unhinged person and this could have been yet another tragedy.

Worse still, the name was a pretty obvious and blatant attempt at trying to pin this tragedy on the Jewish community.

If the man thought any of this he would have taken it further. He is obviously not as affected by this as people here. If he was he would be taking them to court for everything they have.

It’s terrible that businesses are suffering because shoppers are staying away.

Do you understand how confidential settlements work?

Alternatively, he may be in quite some distress and has agreed to a settlement in order to try and not draw out his suffering and move on relatively quickly. Especially in light of how the Higgins case has been drawn out for years and years.

What’s the crux of that article?

Customers have returned for groceries but the rest of the shopping centre is really empty.

Business owners in Westfield Bondi Junction whose faces became familiar as Sydneysiders sought answers from those who witnessed tragedy first hand are asking for help.

Westfield’s tenants are calling on the public to return to the centre this weekend and support the small businesses which, after being exposed to life-changing violence in the recent stabbing attack which killed six, are struggling.

While parts of the shopping centre have seen a return of customers – mostly grocery shopping – the luxury fashion stores and food court remain quiet.

Well I hope Westfield supports its tenants then. But I know they won’t. $$$

Haha :joy: righto.

It is clear Seven want to keep out of the headlines given recent incidents. Instead of a drawn out courtroom drama where Cohen was up for a walk up win, Seven would have offered him a very healthy payout to make this story go away.

It would be well into the six figures. Don’t need to go far to find examples of less publicised examples that have paid $100K+ Seven loses defamation case over news report | TV Tonight

Yes I was there this morning was quiet! Security everywhere with body armour too, considering I used to work in the mall, it was a shock at how much of Mecca it used to be.
