Australia Behind Bars

When you pay top dollar for your talent, it is reasonable to expect exclusivity (unless there is a mutual arrangement ala Eddie McGuire).

I thought it would’ve been better suited to a Wednesday night or something but it seems like there’s also La Brea, Under Investigation and The Hundred with Andy Lee taking the other slots.

An Australian First on Nine

Thursday 3 February at 9.00pm

LIFE BEHIND BARS IN MAXIMUM SECRUITY

In an extraordinary Australian television first, cameras will go beyond the high walls and barbed wire of three maximum security prisons when Australia Behind Bars premieres Thursday, February 3, at 9.00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

This powerful series presented by Melissa Doyle has unprecedented access into the harsh realities of daily life behind bars for inmates and corrections officers alike as it documents the confronting and compelling stories, the heartbreak, hell and hopes, of an existence in prison.

With close to 200 Australians sent to prison every day for crimes ranging from traffic offences to homicide, this uncompromising environment requires a high level of grit and instinct to survive. Within the inmate population are complex and multi-layered hierarchies of affiliations, loyalties, and gangs to adhere to.

The battle lines between guards and inmates are clear as tensions reach boiling point. Approval of social interactions must be sought from respected older inmates, and ensuring that lines of loyalty are not crossed by engaging with anyone known as a “rat”, or informant, is paramount.

As for the corrections officers themselves, they undoubtedly have one of the toughest jobs in the world. These unsung heroes work tirelessly in the face of constant threats of violence and verbal abuse while trying to curb the flow of contraband and drugs into the prisons.

Australia Behind Bars will give viewers a dramatic, firsthand look at a part of society they rarely see, with unforgettable characters, intimate access to the inner workings of the prison system, and highly charged emotional moments of unfiltered humanity.

Australian Behind Bars is produced by ITV Studios Australia for the 9Network.

The show premieres on Three New Zealand next Tuesday (February 8) at 9.25pm, with each episode to air five days after Australia. The NZ broadcast will have MAFS as lead-in every week.

Stupid of Nine to schedule Australia Behind Bars on a Thursday when they knew they’d have to pull it for football before the eight episode season was completed. They’ve launched a successful show and now have three episodes left sitting on the shelf which they’ll run God knows when. Way to kill the momentum, Nine.

In other news, they still can’t manage to shake the old news brand name even on a show produced for the network…

The full season will be shown in AFL states. Sydney and Brisbane however will miss out - I even notice that this week’s episode is billed as the season final in NSW/QLD.

I guess 9Now will be the only choice in NRL territory.

It’ll be interesting to see if it continues to turn up on 9Now after episodes air in AFL states.

Not sure why Nine won’t show this show on 9Gem in the NRL states, unless if 9Gem rates well enough on its own during the NRL season.

Another option could be Wednesday 9.30 when the AFL states have the second edition of Footy Classified.

How do you muck this up?

It’s not just them - heard Karl Stefanovic numerous times last week promoting National Nine News’ continuous flood coverage at the end of Today.

If it’s such an entrenched brand then maybe they should just stick with it. I don’t see what’s wrong with it, to be honest. National Nine News is some good alliteration which is memorable.

Episode 6 is now available on 9Now, for the show’s fans in NSW and QLD.

Only thing I’ve bothered to watch on 9Now this year are the three remaining episodes Nine yanked from the Sydney schedule when the football started.
