The value must be in getting the radio stations together WITH the TV stations
Because if Nine loses WIN affiliation in QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC and TAS - and gets the SC stations - they are much much lower rated stations.
Yes, when Nine programming lands on CTC Canberra/Southern NSW and TNQ Townsville/Queensland - the ratings for those stations will jump massively. But I don’t think up to the current levels that the WIN owned stations in those areas get.
And likewise when Ten programming lands on WIN owned stations - the ratings will really drop.
It will also be a nightmare to market this to consumers.
Think of someone in Canberra - “WIN” or “Channel 9” is suddenly going to be Channel Ten
And Southern Cross Ten will now be Channel 9
We get it - but consumers - they on’t get it at all.
So fans of NRL in regional areas will be watching the first half of the season on WIN (and WIN HD) and the second half of the season on SC (with no HD channel). Sounds like a brilliant idea!
If Southern Cross is going to affiliate with Nine, Southern Cross will need to make sure they’ve got the facilities to broadcast 9HD and 9Life by the time the change over happens (if it’s going to).
Because otherwise it’d be weird to have these two recently launched services disappearing for a while until SCTV can get around to setting them up.
Also, would be very easy for WIN to insert WIN News into the 10 schedule, likely at 6pm. Family Feud is already on 11 and One anyway.
I don’t think SC9 would have much trouble with ratings in North QLD personally. With programming staying the same, and LCNs staying the same as the current WIN set up, I don’t see the ratings for SC9 being any less than WIN currently get
Tasmania could be easy.
No change to TDT, as SC and WIN already jointly run it.
But SC would have to transfer from 7 to 9.
Meaning WIN would have to take over 7’s licenses in Tasmania?
Or would SC continue with 7 and also run 9, leaving WIN to run TDT alone?
…and what about Northern NSW? Surely Nine would keep NBN (especially considering that they’re already in the process of transitioning the branding from NBN to Nine!) and sell off NRN?
Although personally, I’ll be taking the latest round of Nine/SCA and WIN/Ten affiliation speculation with a grain of salt until I see a press release or something else that formally announces a change.
The U.S. had a massive affiliation swap in the Denver Market a few years back in the mid 90’s. I was there about six months before it happen and I remember they were promoting it as early as then. Trying to avoid to much confusion.
It’s to my understanding that the affiliation changes in Denver were just one of many network affiliation changes to happen across various markets in the US during the mid-1990s. The Wikipedia articles below make for some very interesting reading:
Seems that way. Also read that they wanted sorted early and if any changes happen they could wait to October after the footy season to change so it’s not rushed.
