Wonder if this will have any impact on Melbourne and regional Vic ratings overnight? Doubtful OzTam will issue a suspension of data (like due to Adelaide a few years back) with the reported 300-500k affected vs close to 7m population

A transmission line’s towers (Moorabool to Sydenham) were bent in half, causing the connections to the large Loy Yang power station in regional Victoria to trip and shut-down generator units.

There were also lots of critical infrastructure, government run (despite system security and redundancies), such as sets of traffic lights and associated communications blacked out, let alone many buildings mains power.

Dickens said despite being one of the biggest media advertisers, the complexities surrounding cross-platform measurement remain a challenge for the Optus marketing team.

He said there are many discussions about which measurement system is better for tracking, viewership, and performance, whether it’s OzTAM (used for traditional TV), or the metrics used by pay TV, Disney, or Netflix.

Highlighting the existence of cross-platform measurement for broadcast TV and BVOD, Dickens emphasised the need for a strategy to cover the rest of the market.

It is regrettable that Australia will not have a single, universal and independent body able to oversee and process both free-to-air and subscription TV measurement. Additionally, it is regrettable that agencies will no longer have access to a unified data source for evaluating advertising and content performance, despite the industry’s calls for a united, cohesive and comprehensive currency.

How can OzTAM be independent when it is owned by the three commercial networks?

‘Linear TV will continue to be plagued with the same instabilities’: Foxtel Media CEO speaks after company drops out of OzTAM

Speaking to Mumbrella on Thursday, Foxtel Media CEO Mark Frain said the decision to move away from OzTAM came after consultation with industry.

“Foxtel linear TV will continue to be plagued with the same instabilities in audience reporting, should we remain under the new VOZ measurement system,” he said.

“Now, more than 50% of our revenue comes from premium digital video, this revenue comes with a responsibility to report back to our clients with the most accurate data we can provide. We understand that the free to air networks must continue to leverage existing services, as there is no alternative to a panel of audio listening devices to understand how many people are still watching television via an aerial connection.

“We are not being contrary for the sake of it, we are leveraging the data we have available to partner with a global business with experience of delivering a new and authenticated standard of reporting for premium digital video.”
