AM To FM Conversions

Have they shut down the open carriers on 105.9 and 107.5?

Interesting thought, 93.5 Eagle FM comes into Sydney super strong on any sort of tropo and can be at times extremely powerful, so wouldn’t 2XL have the same effect? So on good a good tropo wouldn’t it co-channel with The Edge alot?

don’t know the status of 105.9/107.5 as they’re too low powered to hear & I’d doubt 2XL 96.1 will interfere with The Edge 96.1 (just like Snow-FM doesn’t interfere with SBS 97.7).

Ah yes for some reason I was getting 2XL and 2GN mixed up in my head.

2XL seems to have dropped the power significantly on 96.3 Jindabyne now that 107.3 is on air

Maybe as a way to make people change frequency?

Funny that there’s no mention about it on their website nor on their Facebook page about 2XL now broadcasting on 107.3 in Jindabyne.

Why bother when it’s Capital, they’re all over the band, find a spur that suits you!

According to the Federal Register of Legislation, 5CS-AU in Spencer Gulf, 5CC in Port Lincoln & 5RM in Renmark, has been given the go-ahead to convert their AM services to FM, whilst still maintaining its existing AM services, with the exception of 5AU’s 1242AM service, which will be switched off after conversion.

Still no word on the fate of 5MU’s AM-FM conversion.

Update: ACMA has given 5MU the ‘thumbs up’ to convert to FM.

The final 5 Year Spectrum Outlook 2019-23 has been released today by ACMA, which you can read here.

Of relevance to this thread is that the consultations for the AM-FM conversions for 2RE Taree & 2GF Grafton is set to take place in Q4 2019, ie. between October & December this year.

All 2GF need to do is up the power of their Maclean translator.

You’d think that’s pretty much what 2SM Clarence Valley…I mean, 2GF is going to do? Get approval to boost the power of FM103.9 + switch off 1206AM, perhaps run a short transitionary promotional campaign advising listeners of the changes and call it a day.

I’m not actually sure how many still listen to the 1206 signal. 103.9 even at its lower power makes Grafton just fine.

To be honest, I was actually wondering how many people listen to 2GF full stop.

Admittedly it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been up that way but personally I think the entire output of the station with the possible exception of Richie’s breakfast show (now that Ron Bell is now only really doing ads and voiceovers since his Saturday morning shows were scrapped a few years back) actually makes 104.7 sound like an appealing option!

Both 103.9 and 104.7 are on the same tower but 103.9 is on a different antenna lower down on the mast and on a quarter of the ERP of what 104.7 is. Logically it would make sense to change 103.9 to the same operating conditions as 104.7 but then again, stranger things have happened before. The only thing that may stop 103.9 going to full power in line with104.7 could be potential interference to 2WAY from Wauchope (you can hear both 103.9 Maclean and Wauchope at Boambee Headland in Sawtell). But given the topography, I doubt it will be an issue.

Where is the conversions for 2ST Nowra, and 2LT Lithgow. Will these conversions not take since agreement could not be reached on technical grounds?

I think it’s being put on the back burner until at least sometime next year.

2XL/t 96.3 is now running its loop message advising listeners to retune to 107.3. That means 96.3 will switch off very soon. Apologies for the poor reception. This is the best I could do at my new location

According to the ABC faults & outages page on Crookwell, FM & TV transmissions from Wades Hill in Crookwell will be off-air on Sunday 29th September from Midnight to 5am. This might have something to do with RN changing frequency of its Crookwell service from 107.7 to 104.5 in order to accommodate 2GN’s FM conversion to 107.7.
