The terrain on the Northern Tablelands largely limits overspill in/out of the area.
Neighbouring commercials from Tamworth, Inverell and Coffs Harbour are rarely heard in the area, and Armidale town itself is in a gully.

That is definitely true, 2AD is perhaps not the best example of what I was referring to. 2GN is definitely a case where that has happened (with GNFM’s coverage being greatly compromised compared to Eagle FM) and what I had in mind, I think there’s a handful of other stations with similar situations as well (but can’t think of them at the minute, I’m a bit distracted by the tennis!).
2AD etc doesn’t stream, do they?
No, i think only 2SM does on that network.
Quite amazing in this day and age really
Not on Planet Caralis. Perhaps Bill’s scion will modernise things a tad when the time comes.
Probably doesn’t want to pay extra royalties and infrastructure costs to enable it for all the stations. Only the bigger stations like 2HD and New FM have properly maintained websites.
He doesn’t want to pay for anything, full stop.
He must have directed the reshot ending of Jaws the Revenge which one reviewer sarcastically commented only 45 bucks spent on it!
Nah. Even ‘Sharknado’ would be too much coin for him.
According to a Radioinfo article, 2MG in Mudgee is set to convert to FM later this year, upgrading their studio for the upcoming changeover.
With a good receiver like the TEF, this could be heard into Sydney in ideal conditions after it converts to FM.
I wonder when the SRN will convert 2DU in Dubbo to FM?
The consultation paper for that particular proposal hasn’t even been released yet.
And that the FM conversions only apply to solus markets at this point. Dubbo has competition from SCA.
I suspect i will need some luck to get 2MG on 97.1, particularly with RDS assuming they will have it as Real FM do as i have Radio National Taree to contend with…I think Sydneysiders will have a better chance to get it.
I definitely won’t get it where I am. I’ve had 93.1 before via tropo but Taree is in the way on 97.1.
I thought ACMA were including competitive markets for AM to FM conversions now?
Don’t think so? I thought the priority was to do the solus ones first, then the competing markets afterwards, including metro AMs, given AM radio doesn’t work very well in electric cars.
There was talk of the Perth conversions 2 years ago, which haven’t been agreed to, so I thought competitive markets were now on the agenda.
If they are, hopefully Dubbo and Orange will be next (as well as Lithgow if a suitable frequency and specs can be found for 2LT).
Perth is unique because the sandy soil doesn’t allow AM signals to propagate there. And the FM band is a lot less crowded so it’s easier to do.
There’s a lot of solus markets still to be done yet, Lismore, Inverell, Gunnedah, Moree and Wagga Wagga in NSW. Only Mandurah in regional WA has been done.
Good point. It will probably take a few years for these to get done , knowing ACMAs efficiency!
Oh well , better late than never.
