Yeah, just checked. Very weak & noisy here.
Comes in OK on my NW antenna at the moment, but I havenāt really been paying close attention to its signal strength.
Iāve set up a seventh TEF server connected to my YouLoop so you can see how it performs in an urban environment: http://tvcl.asuscomm.com:58087
I locked it to MW at the moment because in one direction, SW is noisy and in the other direction MW is noisy (right now, itās in the direction where SW is noisy).
I also have some local interference below ~700 kHz which Iām trying to figure out the source of, but above that, it performs reasonably. Hereās a sample scanning through a section of the MW band:
Since Iāve brought this server up, Iāve set the other AM server to SW only, since that one is in the direction where MW is noisy.
In other TEF news, once the new replacement balun arrives for the west antenna, Iāll reactivate TEF server 3 to host it. The Southwest server (server 4) will retain the current southwest antenna (pointed at Canberra), but itāll also get a new south antenna pointed more towards the South Coast down to Eden. So itāll be:
- North (1) - 7-element Yagis pointed NE and NW
- East (2) - 3-element Yagi pointed SE
- West (3) - 7-element Yagi pointed W
- South (4) - 7-element Yagis pointed SW and S
- Shortwave (5) - MLA-30+
- Omni (6) - 3-element Yagi in vertical orientation (which makes it relatively omni [while pointed NW])
- Mediumwave (7) - YouLoop
Amazing work @tvcl . You are keeping the hobby alive and accessible to all; unfortunately I donāt have the technical skills needed to be at the vanguard of it all.
Same here, I barely know one end of a cable to another, and being in an apartment, I donāt have anywhere where I can mount an antenna, at best it would be a very āpart timeā set up anyway.
I was wondering (with the Es season coming up) if anyone knows what 2Es catches have made the journey into Melbourne in the past. With my new 10 element antenna I feel like 2Es would definately be possible but I have no idea what would be the best directions and frequencies to monitor? Thanks
The most famous 2Es catch into Melbourne is Radio Suara Timor Kupang, Indonesia on 90.1 MHz. Western Australia is also received via 2Es most seasons.
āDo you mind if I bring a radio and antenna with me while I check out the apartment?ā ![]()
No real DX today to speak of from Cooma to Albury, tried on a high spot near Jindabyne, best I could do there was Wave FM Wollongong, weak, Sydney frequencies seemed to favour Albury, though they were weak too. 107.5 carrier seems to have finally been switched off! Also didnāt hear any sign of 98.7 XLFM & 101.9 Snow FM Perisher anywhereā¦
Also did a quick scan at Corryong Lookout, had Star 92.1 Wangaratta there, obviously gets out well. Had Brown Mountain ABCs on the Alpine Way until probably 60 km east of Albury.
Looking forward to tomorrow/Saturday, plan to do some DX whilst up at Mt Hotham, it looks to have a great take off in most directions at 1,700 metres! Never DXed that high before
will report back here.
On the subject of local radio In the Mallee (Ouyen) when I tune into 95.3 Flow FM I constantly get Interfearence from 3SR-FM Shepparton.
Does that happen often?
I recall Flow at Birchip/Donald used to be on the ABC Shepparton frequency (97.7), but the interference from that was bad enough for it to be changed to 106.5.
Thatās the issue with the flat terrain in NW VIC and SW NSW: it becomes like an inland sea overnight as far as tropo is concerned. There are quite a few stations that suffer the same fate, from 91.1 Spirit FM Narrandera (smashed by Bendigo) to the 2LF/Roccy translators at Temora (smashed by Albury). Perhaps this is part of the reason why they donāt bother to fix the audio on Temora.
If I may be permitted one from the @TV-Expert playbook- itās the Murray Valley Highway as soon as youāre in the Education State (or maybe even after Khancoban).
Everytime I drive through Narrandera I feel sorry for those guys on 91.1 - itās such a terrible frequency to be co-channeled with
A Star FM/Edge Wangaratta update re infills following FM conversion of 3NE.
90.1 Myrtleford Star FM now on air. No RDS, stereo favouring the right channel heavily.
91.3 Bright: Star FM now on air, same as above
89.3 Mt Hotham and 99.1 Mt Buffalo also have the same stereo sound issue. 89.3 does have RDS though.
Only 93.7 Edge FM Bright has balanced stereo and RDS as it should.
Donāt know how/why itās so bad.
One wonders why they need 91.3 at all; 99.1 covers Bright just fine. The tx for 99.1 is actually on Mount Buffalo itself, just next to the chalet. You can even hear 99.1 in certain spots on the Monaro, such as the big hill between Cooma and Numeralla.
99.1 is fine in the car around Bright, but would struggle indoors. By way of comparison, on the TEF I had a peak of 30 dbuv on 99.1 in Bright, but 91.3 was about 57 dbuvā¦
ACMA have published October 2025 transmitter lists.
Pah- not with a Yagi or a half decent receiver even! People once accepted āruralā grade reception in rural areas; now everything has to be urban grade. I suppose Bright is a top destination for the Lygon latte set, though among them, radio is definitely a falling Star.
Where did you take that video at?
