Here 94.5/102.5 peaks at 35db on the Teccy, but then I am on a north facing slope with a reasonable line of sight back towards Bega. Other parts of town would do a fair bit worse. By comparison, local strength signals for me are 50+ db, and 103.9/105.5 are very strong here at 60db. And they cover Merimbula and Pambula well too, much of Merimbula is on a south facing slope. So I think 2EC/Power repeaters are warranted. ABCs 106.3 and 107.9 peak at 48db, but are mono only (no stereo pilot on either).
Tried a different spot in Eden this morning, car park behind Fishermanâs Club at top of the town hill.
Got these that I didnât get yesterday
106.1 and 107.7 ABCs Cann River
96.7 and 100.7 ABCs Gippsland. 95.1 News there again too.
And later this morning
Nanny Goat Hill in Cooma
88.9 Braidwood FM good no RDS
ABC Illawarra 90.9, 95.7, 97.3, 98.9 fair
Canberra community 91.1, 91.9, 92.7 and 98.3 were all good but none with RDS
92.1 XLFM Thredbo good no RDS
92.9 Snow FM Thredbo good with RDS
93.9 Monaro FM Jindabyne fair no RDS
94.5 2EC Bega fair
94.7 Snow FM and 107.3 XLFM Jindabyne both good RDS
95.5 and 97.1 ABC Jindabyne good
100.7 suspected ABC Local Gippsland as Victorian premier was speaking
ABC Canberra 101.5, 102.3 good but no RDS. 103.9 and 105.5 SBS good too
101.9 Snow FM Perisher good with RDS. No XLFM on 98.7 from there however
ABC Albury 103.3 and 104.1 fair, 106.5 blocked by SBS Cooma
102.7 SKY Jindabyne good
103.5 and 105.1 ABC Batemans Bay weak
Canberra commercials 104.7 and 106.3 good but no RDS
106.9 SKY Thredbo good
Usually 88.9 is all Thredbo in Cooma- will have to try it next time Iâm down. There is a spot just north of Nimmitabel on the climb up to the crest of the range where 2BRW comes in very well, though not quite at RDS level. You can null Thredbo entirely in that spot.
Up at Mt Ainslie in Canberra earlier this afternoon, did some DXing on both the east and west side of the lookout, and got a few different results, as there is a rise that shades each side.
ABC South West Slopes 88.3, 89.1, 89,9, 90.7 and 91.5 - reception was good on both sides for all stations.
88.5 - something weak on the east side, not received on western side
88.9 - Braidwood FM, good on east, fair on west
ABC South East 89.7, 99.3, 100.1, 100.9 good on east. But on west side, they could not be received, instead 99.3 was faint B-Rock Bathurst and 100.9 SKY Bathurst.
ABC Illawarra 90.9, 95.7, 97.3 and 98.9 was good on east, not quite as good on the west
92.3 faint on west, not on east, possibly YYY Young, given ROCCY further below.
93.1 Hit Wagga, fair on the east side, good on the west.
93.3 2MNO Nimmitabel good on east, not on west
93.7 possibly 2BAR Bega good on east, not on west.
93.9 ROCCY Young, good on west, not recâd on east
94.5 2EC Bega with RDS good on east, not on west.
94.9 Power good with RDS on east, fair no RDS on west.
95.3 Radio National Cooma weak on east, not on west
96.1 XLFM and 97.7 SNOW both good with RDS on both sides.
96.9 SKY Cooma good on both sides too
100.3 Yass FM good on both sides
ABC Batemans Bay 100.5, 101.9, 103.5, 105.1 good on east side. However on west side, JJJ Orange was on 101.9, faint Triple M and Hit from Orange on 105.1/105.9 instead.
102.7 Classic Orange, fair on east, good on west.
102.9 something faint on east side, suspect 2ST Bowral
103.3 RAM FM Goulburn with RDS on both sides
104.1 faint 2DayFM and 105.7 JJJ on east side, neither on west. Oddly no other Sydney FMs appeared
anywhere.
104.3 was Power with RDS on east, replaced by good RN Orange on west side. Similarly 105.9 was 2EC with RDS on east, faint Hit Orange as further above on west side.
106.7 SKY Orange weak on east, fair on west
107.5 2EAR with RDS on east, faint on west, though this could have been 2OCR Orange
107.9 SKY Yass good on both sides.
That could possibly be a retransmission of ABC Radio Canberra from Captains Flat.
Anyone got a good Sporadic E forecast site?
I donât think you can predict these, hence the term âsporadicâ.
Really great observations over the last few days! I would be curious to see if there are parts of that Canberra/ Monaro region where 104.1 would get Albury and 96.9 would get Hit Goulburn Valley over Sky Cooma? Know both have a reputation of travelling a long way north in the right conditions
I did get 103.3 and 104.1 Albury at Cooma yesterday, but I think youâd need to be over the other side of the Dividing Range to get Shepparton⌠which Iâve received at the lookouts in Gundagai in the past. And also last year between Broken Hill and Mildura as well, so yes youâre right, the Shepparton stations can get out a long way.
Shepparton can get into the Canberra regionâŚitâs been received clearly via aircraft scatter in Williamsdale. Bendigo too, before those frequencies were blocked. I have also had 102.5 Deniliquin clearly. Canberra is technically west of the Divide but does have the small matter of the Brindabellas to its west.
Albury FM is a regular even on the car radio in places; the best spot is going down the big hill into Queanbeyan from the east. Getting 2DAY FM in Canberra is actually just as difficult. Sydney really only makes it to Red Hill and Mt Ainslie. Going up to Corin Forest there is a spot (near Billy Billy Creek) where Sydney and Gosford FM comes in very well. Youâre about 1100 m ASL there.
Those Ainslie grabs mirror my experiences so all of that is regular reception; have not been up since 2EC converted to 94.5. 88.5 would be Captains Flat; this is strong into Bungendore. It is relaying 666 direct from AM; 100.3 Braidwood is also doing that.
Yes that surprises me given on the Federal Highway, the Sydney FMs make it to the southern end of Lake George without too much fuss, but once you get south of Weereewa Lookout (only 30kms north east of Canberra), it seems like they disappear without a trace and donât usually reappear even in elevated spots.
Canberra is a DX hole really, surrounded by high ranges on nearly every side. The ranges between Bungendore and Canberra are enough to kill Sydney FM. Most of the regular DX signals come from the north or NW (Orange, Young). Griffith is also regularly received in Canberra. If it wasnât for the gap in the hills to the NW, Canberra wouldnât get any DX- or much in the way of rainfall!
Sydney is weak permanent on the car radio in many parts of Bungendore. I get all high powered outlets at 2-3 bars on the Yagi most of the time. Much better than Canberra for FM DX.
Hit 99.5 and 97.9 Triple M Mildura were both quite strong this afternoon in Renmark, likely due to the large high pressure system sitting off Victoria causing some enhancement
VK2KRR received both 5MU (96.3) and 5AU (97.9) on his elaborate setup near Wagga this evening. Both with RDS! So some good tropo for inland SE Australia on tap.
Tropo About in Traralgon this weekend but Victorian Lockdown means Iâve not been able to go up to Balook like I intended to so in terms of DX at home FM is basically same as last time, stronger Melbourne and Bairnsdale. Bit interesting on AM with 2UE from Sydney coming in during the day. (for some reason 2GB didnât). Something was overlapping SEN 1116 once again and agreeing with what @TV-Expert said a few days ago I believe it is 4BC from Brisbane, but cannot hear it well enough to find out for sure.
My Metro Antenna for both VHF TV and FM has had to be abandoned because the technician who was handling the case has decided not to respond anymore, no other installers are either willing to do it or willing to do it for a logical price and I have no idea how to do it myself.
You Victorians are very lucky to get some Quarantine Tropo. I read somewhere from a person named Andrew that 98.7 Murray Bridge was being received in Ballarat. Sadly none of that inland tropo has expanded to Bowral, tried for Mt Uluara but its all static, 2BLU Katoomba or WSFM Camden. Plus 93.1 and 99.7 was the same thing.
@Joe1234 Also I feel sorry for you being in Quarantine despite no cases in your area.
Apart from Corin Forest and Mount Ainslie the closest to Canberra I have had Sydney fm is on the car radio in the car park at the Eaglehalk in Sutton. Smooth and Nova were the only stations received, they came in just above the noise floor from memory.
Yes it definitely lightens the mood a bit. I would love to be out DXing up in the Mountains but the government unfortunate had other plans.
Thank you for thinking of us. We havenât seen a COVID case since October last year.
Sorry to hear that. A couple of suggestions for you.
- Thereâs a wealth of very helpful how-to-do videos out there on YouTube.
- You could consider making contact with a local amateur radio club. Might be a local member who could assist or put you in contact with someone who can do your job.
Co-channel interference galore this morning in Berri S.A, Mix 102.3 Adelaide and 3BA Ballarat playing at the same time. Also Hit 96.9 Shepparton with co-channel interference on that as well
