Worse for me with the Blacktown game is that it’s Saturday 1:10, on a weekend where I’m in Sydney for their Marathon.
Must be something else happening at Carrara that we don’t know about to prevent the GF being played there, or a TV thing which is typical but expected laziness. Or did Cricket Australia book the venue for WBBL finals under the nose of the AFL?
I reckon Heritage Bank Stadium management told the AFL that the venue would not be available for AFLW grand final because of maintenance period before the new BBL season.
According to the stadium’s website, there is no events listed for December this year as yet.
Where else do you expect the Giants to play? Blacktown is the home of their AFLW/NEAFL teams. I get Blacktown is a bit of a shithole, but it’s good to see GWS actually play games west of the Gladesville Bridge.
I’ll bet it is either cost or that they’ve elected for venues that the clubs operate (Stadiums Queensland operate Carrara)
The AFLW team will be playing from Dingley in the future, Frankston is likely the nearest ground without intruding on St Kilda’s (Moorabbin) and Melbourne’s (Casey) territory.
Sorry, yes that’s what I was meaning. Everyone once and a bye (or someone again and have a “Gather Round” at the same time as the mens’ for 18 rounds.)
If we play the season at the same time as the Men, crowds will be way too low as more people will be at the men’s game than at the women’s. Giving them seasons with no AFLM overlap means bigger crowd numbers. Maybe seasons from September-February with a Christmas break would be better?
But then no one will show up to the AFLW. The grounds will be empty. It’s worth playing them at different times so then the AFLW gets clean air in terms of broadcasting and good crowds.
Port Melbourne have won the VFLW flag after beating Collingwood by 12 points at ETU Stadium. Borough defender Lauren Caruso was given the Lisa Hardeman Medal for best on ground.
Melbourne opened their premiership defence with a 42-point thumping of Collingwood at Ikon Park tonight, in front of 8412 fans. The Pies dominated most of first half and led by 8 points at half time, before the Demons broke the game apart with eight unanswered goals in the second half.
