AFL (2016-2024)

They would be at the Sydney Showgrounds Stadium (Giants Stadium), as it’s their home final.

Should be in for some good games ahead.

GWS will be a ripper next week against either team.

Carlton win tonight, and things will get interesting as they have good form at the Showgrounds.

GWS or Carlton facing the Cats in the Prelim will be another good one.

Exciting times ahead!

Another Sydney vs Geelong grand final is on the cards like what everyone said in July.

What an anti-climax and a disaster for Channel 7 and the AFL in a match nobody will watch

Then the other 16 teams should play better. Not like it’s rigged or anything.

And Melbourne will always tune in for a Grand Final, along with Adelaide, Perth, etc

Might as well only have Melbourne only teams in the whole competition then to ensure a Melbourne only grand final.

Anyone but Geelong…. They seem to be the new Collingwood these days.

Exactly - it’s a national competition - if none of the non vic teams weren’t allowed to make the finals, then they would go bankrupt.

AFAIK the highest rated AFL GF ever involved 2 non-Melbourne teams - 2005 Sydney vs West Coast .

Geelong/Brisbane or GWS probably wouldn’t rate either.

The best they can hope for is Carlton/Hawks which seems unlikely watching the Blues fumbling here. At a pinch , Geelong/Hawks, which probably wouldn’t rate that bad either.

Some unwanted history for Carlton: the first team to be held scoreless in the first quarter of a VFL/AFL final since North Melbourne in the 1974 semi final against Richmond at Waverley Park. (The Tigers scored 5.7 in the first quarter and went on to win by 21 points. The two teams would meet again in the grand final which was won by Richmond)

This is some terrible play from the Blues, you can’t turn this around now. What on earth was the shot before, kicking to the umpire or something lol. The one chance they had to kick a goal. Disaster.

At least Port showed up for the first part of their game, this is just worse somehow.

Brisbane scored the first 60 points of the match before Carlton responded with two late goals. At least the Blues avoided their lowest first half score in a final: 1.3 (9) set in 1903.

Ken wins next week and his disaster will be a distant memory. Carlton better pickup here otherwise this will be stuck with them and the media until Round 1.

Geelong getting looked aftered since 2007 with 14 preliminary finals, 2 rising stars, 3 Brownlow Medalists, 4 Premierships and likely a 5th and the only Victorian club with its own home ground

Look, I hate Geelong as much as the next person - but you cannot attribute their success - particularly this year - to being “looked after”.

Even the era of #FreeKickHawthorn is (mostly) past us, ignoring the fact that Ginnivan seems to get free kicks now that he’s in brown and gold instead of black and white.

Since 2000:

  • Collingwood have been in six grand finals (seven counting 2010 replay), and have won two.

  • Essendon have been in two grand finals, won one

  • Richmond have been in three grand finals, won three

  • Hawthorn have been in five grand finals, won four

  • Melbourne have been in two grand finals, won one

  • Geelong have been in sx grand finals, won four

  • Western Bulldogs have been in two grand finals, won one

  • St Kilda have been in two grand finals (three if you count the 2010 replay), didn’t win either

  • Sydney have been in 6 grand finals, won two

  • West Coast have been in four grand finals, won two

  • Brisbane have been in five grand finals, won three

  • Port Adelaide have been in two grand finals, won one

  • Adelaide, Fremantle, and GWS have all been in one - none of them won

  • Gold Coast haven’t been in any

Since 2000, there have been eight grand finals featuring only Victoria teams, compared to three with only Non-Victorian teams, and twelve that feature at least one Victoria & one Non-Victorian team.

Also, Geelong have their own stadium because Geelong is a separate city to Melbourne - the Melbourne based teams all had stadiums that they were outgrowing, out of date, and would’ve been cost to upgrade to modern standards, especially since the AFL had built Waverly, and later Docklands. Clubs would be making twice or three times the amount of money they would be making at suburban grounds at Docklands and the MCG.

Geelong have chosen to stay at their own ground - that’s their choice - AFL didn’t force anyone to leave their own grounds.

West Coats have also won three Brownlow Medals since 2000.

The AFL does not look after Geelong - it’s clear that they have a strategy and performance plan that has worked for them over and over again.
