AFL (2016-2024)

St Kilda will set up its hub on the Sunshine Coast, the other five teams will be based on the Gold Coast. All six teams will also play matches at The Gabba in Brisbane.

More woes for Collingwood.

If it was investigated in 2018, why has he been charged now?

Maybe the girl wants charges to be laid.

Articles in the public arena provide no possible justification for the re-laying of charges by police so unable to say more until that comes out. The attached release says even less, have to look for the news articles online which provide some more (but still not much) info on this.

However must be something more than simply “she said” if they have laid charges now, rather than 2-5 years ago.

Well it only takes a ‘she said’ for the police to be able to lay charges. The amount of evidence needed to lay charges in sexual assault cases is very little. It could be she has come forward again and asked why nothing has happened. Who knows. I guess more will come out in court.

Respectfully, that’s a misunderstanding of the problem.

The legal system is notoriously bad at handling sexual assault cases (among others) primarily because, among other things, the prosecution is required to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt. In so many cases, the evidence does - as you suggest - come down to one party’s version of events over another, and as doubt is incredibly easy to inject into a case, many victims of sexual abuse are so often not dealt justice.

Victoria Police, for all their flaws, are fully aware of this. They do not file charges in instances that they think will not stand up in court, even if ultimately a jury might still be able to found reasonable doubt in a case where an alleged victim’s testimony is of utmost credibility.

Clearly this call has not been made at a whim: Collingwood’s statement confirms there was an investigation back in 2018, but nothing explicitly states this investigation was ever closed. You are right, of course, that time will tell.

There are talks that the Grand Final will be played in Sydney or Brisbane this year. The AFL don’t seem to want to deal with WA or SA as they haven’t been very supportive to the AFL whereas NSW and QLD have been very supportive and almost embraced it. Apparently the TV viewers are up quite significantly in those two markets, especially QLD.

In some sense this has been great for the National side of the competition.

The viewership is terrific however I have figured a way the AFL can have their twilight Grand Final but still host it in daylight:

OPTUS STADIUM GRAND FINAL

It looks similar to the MCG and will create the colosseum feel when it is full

Western Australia has always been big supporters of the national games

They could play the game commencing at 3:00pm WA time yet the match will be aired at 5:00pm on the East coast due to the timezone difference.

How can you have a Grand Final there when you have to quarantine for 14 days? And when they haven’t been supportive of the AFL. The NSW government are offering the AFL money to host the Grand Final. I say give it to them. Stuff WA and SA.

6pm as it will be during daylight savings time.

What would happen is you have the Finals Series in Perth.

This is complete disrespect to the states that have long supported footy (SA and WA)

ANZ Stadium has been widely known as the worst AFL ground- why play the Grand Final there when you can play it at one of the best grounds in the country? Also, quarantine shouldn’t be in place by November

But they haven’t supported the AFL during the pandemic and only made it difficult for the AFL.

Again why would you when you have to quarantine for 14 days?

Because the NSW Government is offering the AFL huge amounts of money to play there. It also exposes the game to the Northern states.

An AFL Grand Final played in Sydney would be an absolutely fantastic thing for us…if either the Swans or Giants made it into the game.

Not sure if there’d be much interest if the game turned out to be something like the West Coast Eagles playing Collingwood as it was in 2018. Either way, I reckon “the real football grand final” in the eyes of most Sydneysiders (even amongst those who don’t usually care about either code during the year) will still be the NRL’s especially if last year was anything to go by with the completely manufactured hype for the Giants.

$$$$$

NSW are reportedly willing to pay big to get the game - it may be with minimal (if any) crowds too

See that’s wrong - only fair to play it somewhere with a good chance of getting a crowd (which is why Melbourne should rightly be out).

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love a GF at the Gabba for purely selfish reasons, but it’s hardly the best place to host it. That would be Adelaide Oval or Perth Stadium.

And @turdall surely there’s a chance restrictions on teams will be eased by then, so quarantine periods may not be necessary?

or once they play their final game of the season all teams in finals fly off to Perth to have a Perth Finals?

You can get stuffed. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: why should it always be eastern states/? The attitude of the eastern states…

I dont disagree - especially when ANZ is this country’s worst stadium by a long way, but money talks - and I suspect the AFL need it.

I’d imagine that the AFL will leave it as long as possible to announce a venue - if the game was to go ahead with no crowds (but outside of Vic), its location probably isnt as critical though.

This is a pointless discussion. The MCG has a contract with the AFL valid through 2057.
