Monty Don’s Spanish Gardens

Friday 7 February 7.30pm

Monty visits spectacular gardens in the Central region of Spain from its important historic Imperial Palaces and modern designs adapted to the challenges of climate change.
Monty Don takes viewers on a three-part journey across Spain in a quest to visit some of the country’s most interesting gardens, community projects and parks.

Covering more than 4000 kilometres he’ll deep dive into green spaces ranging from historical to cutting edge as well as those created by a new wave of Spanish designers who are working more closely with the landscape and the challenges of the harsh climate.

Monty begins at the Escorial – a vast imposing palace and garden, built as a symbol of the power of Spain’s once huge empire that stretched across the globe. He then travels to the centre of the country’s capital, Madrid, to visit the city’s famous Retiro Park and Paseo del Prado. Here he visits a tropical garden in the unlikely setting of one of the city’s main railway stations, a modern garden created by and for dogs and a dynamic new school where nature and gardening play a central role.

Also, on this journey, Monty visits important towns like Toledo, once the capital of Spain, to discover gardens that reflect the rich cultural history of the country. As he travels around Castile, he also discovers modern gardens, including one made in an olive orchard, and another hewn out of some of the harshest landscapes in the whole of Spain.

Monty finishes the first part of this tour in Spain’s third largest city, Valencia, where locals defied plans to create a motorway and instead campaigned successfully to create a park for everyone to exercise, picnic, play and simply enjoy themselves in.

Here Monty gets on his bike to see for himself what a transformation this has been for those living in the heart of this big city.

As usual, the ABC will be airing the national flag raising and citizenship ceremony between 9am and 10:15am on Australia Day. It will be hosted by Nate Byrne, and will be air on ABC-TV (delayed outside of the AEDT timezone), and on the ABC News Channel. Weekend Breakfast will air from 7am-9am, and from 10:15am until 11am.

The ABC will also be airing the Australia Day Address from the Governor-General at 6:54pm (just before the 7pm news).

You mean that there’s a show that Jeremy Fernandez isn’t hosting. Amazing.

Though Nate Byrne isn’t a great choice among so many others.

Don’t mind that look they’re going for there in theory, but looks a bit under baked. Maybe it’s the ABC font

I think it’s that shade of blue on black. It doesn’t work. They need to stick to the classic ABC shade of blue.

Hmm I think I actually prefer this blue to be honest, looks a bit more… authoritative maybe.

And the black is not really like a solid black, it’s almost like a very dark grey - at least to my eyes.

I can see where they were going, and there’s bits I like, just feels a bit underdone which is about usual for the ABC.

Promo stood out to me because of the differing colour scheme to the usual.

But it is reminiscent of ABC News colours

Monty Don’s Spanish Gardens Episode 2

Friday 14 February 7.30pm

Monty Don is in the south of Spain visiting gardens that show how this part of the country has evolved thanks to influences from visitors and settlers from ancient to modern times.

Monty Don travels across the southern part of Spain from the island of Mallorca to the Costa del Sol and then inland ending in one of Spain’s most famous cities and the capital of Andalusia, Seville.

Starting in Mallorca, Monty visits four very different gardens: a historic one with the elements of water and fantasy enjoyed in past times; a garden made out of the harshest of landscapes by a Swiss woman intent on creating a Mediterranean garden; an iconic modern garden created by one of Spain’s leading designers, and one created for parties and the holiday lifestyle.

From here Monty travels to the mainland and visits an astonishing UNESCO site where hundreds of thousands of palms are grown and still tended using methods established centuries ago.

He then heads to the Costa del Sol and Estepona to see how the enterprising local council have transformed their town, pushing cars out of the urban area and putting back the elements that had first drawn people to it.

Monty ends his journey in Seville where behind the city’s walls are historic well-tended gardens as well as parks that shade city dwellers from the 40-degree heat even in springtime. He visits a palace as colourful and flamboyant as its owner and another that reflects the strong Italian connections of another Spanish family as well as seeing out shade from one of the city’s well-tended parks.
