That’s in a much more limited ‘overflow’ way though compared to 5 Live whereby sports coverage is a core part of the station.

ABC RN announces Australia’s best and brightest young minds

The ABC has once again selected the pick of Australia’s sparkling early-career research talent for its TOP 5 Science and TOP 5 Humanities media residencies. Five successful applicants from each of these two domains will take part in an intensive and hands-on two weeks “in residence” at ABC RN in Sydney, working with some of Australia’s best journalists and broadcasters.

It’s a unique opportunity for emerging thinkers to go behind-the-scenes with the ABC’s expert communicators, burnishing the skills of these future leaders and role models so that their important work can be celebrated by Australians everywhere.

The ABC TOP 5 Humanities for 2022 are:

  • Michelle Newcomb

  • Ming Ming Cheng
Curtin University – studies tourism and its substantial impact on the environment, including the attitudes and habits of holiday-makers and strategies for driving behavioural change
  • Julia Cook
University of Newcastle – examines housing affordability for younger Australians and how cliches around the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ mask a much more diverse reality

Cath Dwyer, Manager of ABC Radio National, sees the TOP 5 as an important way of engaging with the university sector and keeping our audiences informed. “We love welcoming these talented researchers to RN. They bring superb enthusiasm and ideas to enrich what we do here at the ABC and inform how we communicate complex ideas in a world of polarised beliefs and contested facts.”

Amruta Slee Manager of Society & Culture at RN, said Every year I look forward to the injection of brain power the Top 5 residents provide to RN, it’s vital for keeping our audiences informed about the latest research and ideas”.

ABC Science Editor Jonathan Webb said “The applications we received were extraordinary and our five winners are rising stars of science. I want more of Australia’s brilliant minds to become household names; they are solving some of our thorniest problems and we need to hear their voices! That’s what the ABC Top 5 is all about.”

The 2021 TOP 5 residencies were held virtually due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022 the ABC will present the residencies with a face-to-face component, meaning an even richer and more hands-on experience for the researchers.

Key TOP 5 dates

  • HUMANITIES RESIDENCY: Monday 22nd Aug – Friday 02nd
  • SCIENCE RESIDENCY: Monday 19th – Friday 30th
  • The TOP 5 Arts scheme is in partnership with the University of Melbourne and the Australia Council for the Arts, and will be announcing it’s TOP 5 for 2022 in coming weeks.

Has Linda been presenting PM from Hobart or am I thinking of another radio current affairs host?

Linda is one of the true quality journalists at the ABC.

Feels like only yesterday Mark Colvin died, ending his run as PM host.

Fresh new start for RN Drive in 2023

In 2023, RN Drive will bring the best news and analysis of the day to audiences at the earlier time of 4pm.

Andy Park will be back hosting RN Drive in 2023, keeping our listeners up to date with federal politics, currents affairs, arts, culture and the stories that are making Australia talk.

Andy Park said: “It’s a privilege hosting RN Drive and I’m excited about what 2023 holds for the program and our listeners. We’ll continue to offer great conversations and in-depth analysis across the huge political, economic, and international stories of our times. I’m looking forward to keeping you company on the way home and unpacking the big issues and ideas the nation is talking about, at the new time of 4pm”

Following Drive, catch the stories from across Australia and around the world with David Lipson on PM every weekday afternoon at 5.30pm.

PM will take audiences into our specialist programming hour of The Health Report, The Law Report, The Religion and Ethics Report and The Money at 6pm on Monday to Thursday with Marc Fennell’s media, culture, and technology program Download This Show on Fridays.

ABC RN Manager Cath Dwyer said “Audience habits are changing and the news cycle is moving faster than ever. We’re excited to bring RN Drive to audiences earlier, to unpack the day’s events and be part of national conversations that affect us all.”

ABC RN’s afternoon schedule will still include the ever-popular Conversations at the earlier time of 2pm and the encore broadcast of Late Night Live at 3pm.

Saturdays will also sound different in 2023 with The Bookshelf’s Cassie McCullagh also presenting The Weekend from 1-3pm, replacing Marc Fennell who will continue to host Download This Show and will also bring season 3 of his smash hit award winning podcast Stuff The British Stole to audiences in 2023.

We’re excited to welcome Robbie Buck back to ABC audiences in 2023. He’ll present The Music Show on Saturday and Sunday at 11am for six months as Andrew Ford takes some extended leave to work on other projects.

In addition to our refreshed afternoon schedule, in 2023 audiences will be treated to a range of exciting new and returning programs on ABC RN and ABC listen.

Hamish MacDonald will host a new podcast looking at the personalities of some of the world’s most enigmatic leaders. The new eight-part series, Take Me To Your Leader, will explore the lives and legacies of eight influential heads of state, from Vladmir Putin to Giorgia Meloni, from Xi Jinping to Narendra Modi. The podcast launches on Sunday mornings ABC RN and ABC listen on 29 January.

New seasons of the popular podcast Days Like These will also be heard across the year on ABC RN, alternating with the award-winning documentary show Earshot which returns with new seasons in 2023.

ABC RN listeners will be treated to all their other favourite shows returning in 2023. The full 2023 ABC RN schedule is available here.

RN are still cost cutting with the banal conversation program still getting an afternoon replay, it needs to be dropped from RN.

Shifting drive so early is a poor move, has been great to have a decent program on at 6pm when drive goes soft on ABC metro local.

Delaying PM to 5:30 is also a shame.

The ABC is searching for Australia’s next generation of inspiring research communicators across Science, the Humanities, and the Arts to share their ideas, findings and insights with the world.

Applications are now open for the 2023 ABC TOP 5 media residencies.

Five successful applicants from each of the three fields will receive intensive two-week media training and practical experience in residence at ABC Radio National, working alongside some of Australia’s best journalists and broadcasters.

Cath Dwyer, Manager ABC Radio National, says engaging with the media can be a daunting prospect for many early career researchers.

“Media organisations play an important role in encouraging and fostering emerging research talent, and connecting Australians with new ideas and ways of thinking. The ABC TOP 5 program provides early career researchers with career-long skills, knowledge and confidence to communicate with all media and their audiences about their field of expertise,” she says.

“The ABC TOP 5 program is the only one of its kind in Australia. It’s now in its ninth year and boasts 80 alumni, with many becoming leading commentators in their fields and mentors for other early career researchers.

“The ABC is proud to be working with our project partners at the University of Melbourne, the Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian National University and the University of Sydney whose support makes the TOP 5 possible.”

Applications open 8.30am (AEST) Friday 31 March 2023 and close 11.59pm (AEST) Sunday 14 May 2023.
