###Reggie Yates: Extreme UK: Gay and Under Attack

Sunday 5 February at 7:40pm

It might seem easy to be gay in the UK, but if you’re Black or Asian, Catholic or Muslim, it can be a living nightmare. While mainstream British society celebrates gay marriage, hundreds of young people continue to fight a daily battle against their own communities their families, friends, politicians and pastors who believe that the traditional and biblical model of man and woman should be upheld at all costs.

In this film Reggie will meet persistent homophobes whose lives are steeped in religious fundamentalism and cultural stigma - and the people whose lives they have destroyed. He’ll ask where this bile is coming from - and then meet the people spreading the rhetoric.

Throughout this episode, Reggie will be shocked to witness fundamentalist religious views - he’ll meet the vociferous and divisive leaders who believe gay people should disown their own sexuality. It’s not just words though - the number of homophobic hate crimes in the UK recorded by police surged dramatically last year, with hundreds of physical and verbal attacks on LGBT people across the UK.

###Secret Life of the Human Pups

Friday 10 February at 9:10pm

Britain is a nation obsessed with dogs. There are nine million of them in the UK, with one-in-four households having a canine companion. But some people don’t just want to own a dog… they want to be one.

Secret Life of the Human Pupsintroduces us to a previously unseen subculture of ordinary men who lead extraordinary double lives, dressing up in elaborate dog suits that cost thousands of pounds as they strive to become their very own pet.

Human puppy play has become a global phenomenon in recent years and there are now an estimated 10,000 ‘human pups’ in the UK alone. But what makes these grown men covet doggy treats, belly rubs and squeaky toys? And why has it risen in popularity? From Crufts-style competitions to obedience training and finding a handler, being a human pup is just like being a dog, but fearing scorn and ridicule most have kept their alter egos a secret… until now.

Getting under the skin of this weird and wonderful world, the Secret Life of the Human Pups explores what it takes to become a human pup, the impact it has on friends and loved ones and why, for some people, it has become a way of life. With unprecedented access, Guy Simmonds’ directorial debut explores a previously unseen side of British life full of humour, drama and intrigue.

Secret Life of the Human Pups is produced by Firecracker Films, the team behind Secrets of the Living Dolls.

ABC KIDS celebrates the Lunar New Year with preschool programs in Mandarin

ABC is excited to announce that four of our most popular preschool programs will be available in Mandarin as part of a 12-month trial on ABC iview and ABC KIDS iview to celebrate the Year of the Rooster.

Starting Saturday January 28, Mandarin speaking families and families with an interest in developing Mandarin as a second language, will be able to enjoy watching Mandarin language versions of the Australian/Chinese co-production hoopla doopla! plus ABC KIDS favourites Peppa Pig, The Octonauts and Peter Rabbit.

Almost a quarter of Australian’s speak a language other than English at home, with Mandarin the most popular. Mandarin is also now firmly established as an important part of the language curriculum in Australian schools.

Seven Mandarin episodes of each title will be available at launch, with new episodes added daily throughout February. In addition, three Mandarin episodes of hoopla doopla! will be available on broadcast as part of our TV Education service for schools, with supporting education resources online.

The English versions of each episode will be offered simultaneously with the Mandarin program on ABC iview and ABC KIDS iview. The Mandarin episodes will have a 中文 (‘Chinese language’) icon on each episode image for easy recognition.

Rebecca Heap, ABC Head of Programming and Digital said: “We are thrilled to be able to extend our trusted ABC KIDS service to new audiences and to offer our existing families a whole new way to engage with their favourite programs. ABC KIDS aims to provide Australian families with trusted programming that reflects the world around them. Mandarin is one of the most popular and fastest growing languages and we can’t wait to see how Australian preschoolers engage with our trial on ABC iview and ABC KIDS iview.”*

Based on audience feedback, and subject to program availability, ABC KIDS hopes to trial preschool titles in additional languages throughout 2017.

Reggie Yates travels to Chicago to investigate gun crime in Chicago, with 468 murders in 2015 of mostly young African American men, who is to blame?

###Broad City - Series 3

From Thursday 2 March at 10:00pm

Broad City is an odd couple comedy about two best friends navigating their twenties in New York City whose adventures always lead down unexpected and outlandish paths. They’re broke, flawed and don’t shy away from the sticky situations NYC throws at them – they dive right into the muck. But no matter how bad it gets, these young broads are always down with whatever hits them.

Season three of the hit comedy series sees Abbi and Ilana dealing with a whole new slew of everyday challenges and adventures as they live their lives in New York City, including a trip to the DMV, a rat in the apartment, going clubbing, taking on new job responsibilities, visiting Abbi’s dad and new hookups.

###My Trans American Road Trip

Friday 3 March at 9:10pm

The world’s first transgender foreign affairs correspondent, former Parachute Regiment officer Abigail Austen, travels to America on the eve of a knife-edge Presidential contest, to discover why transgender rights have become a key election battleground.

This year, critical swing state North Carolina passed legislation forcing transgender people to use the bathroom of the biological gender recorded on their birth certificate. Women like Abi now have to use the men’s toilet, or risk going to jail. The so-called ‘Bathroom Bill’ provoked a fierce national backlash, forcing the Obama administration to sue North Carolina. Transgender rights have provoked a constitutional crisis in a state that both Presidential candidates are desperate to win. It’s a culture and civil rights war, but for Abi, it’s not just politics, it’s personal.

No good game its been axed

Available on ABC iview in 6 x 10 min short form episodes from 9:30pm on 14 March, airing on ABC2 at 9:30pm on Wednesday 15 March

In this revealing series, author, journalist, TV presenter and human rights advocate, Tara Moss tours the darkest corners of the web to uncover the cyber violence that’s impacting so many people today.

Moss, a social media user and advocate against cyber bullying tells her own story of dealing with online threats and abuse, and affirms the positives and negatives of online life. She reveals first-hand stories of cyberhate from others in the public eye, and members of the public who have unwillingly been thrust into the spotlight through online attacks.

Via scientific and social experiments, and interviews with experts, victims and self-confessed ‘trolls’, Moss lifts the cloak of anonymity and disinhibition, and guides us through the complexities of online ethics and digital democracy to investigate why fury and bullying is reshaping the online world, and what we can do about it.

Will the Internet become a place where only bullies have a voice, or is a digital democracy still possible?

###Getting High for God?

Wednesday 22 March at 9:20pm

Mawaan Rizwan was brought up in a religious family but is no longer practising and feels detached from spirituality. Curious to see if that might change, Mawaan visits two religious movements in North and South America, both of which use powerful psychoactive drugs. This isn’t just a handy excuse for the ‘trip’ of a lifetime – Mawaan wants to see if he can access the Almighty.

Getting High for God? gains exclusive access to a Christian ‘Spiritist’ church in Brazil, where the congregation frequently ingest ayahuasca tea. Banned in the UK, ayahuasca induces LSD-like hallucinations. Mawaan takes part in the church’s ancient ceremony, which involves chanting, singing, vomiting and – hopefully – an intense religious awakening.

This daring documentary also travels to Utah, where the Native American Church followers use peyote, a psychedelic drink extracted from a cactus. The group’s sacramental ritual takes place in a tepee in the middle of a desert and can last for 10 hours.

There’s no turning back, but will Mawaan find the answers he’s looking for, or will he discover a darker side to spiritual enlightenment?
