ABC Comedy - Programs and Schedules

New signposts?

###Sunday 9 October to Friday 14 October on ABC2 & iview
In October 2016 ABC2 shines a big, bright week long spotlight on mental health issues facing young Australians today.

With more than 18 programs to be broadcast across the week Mental As…2 will highlight a broad range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, obsessive compulsive disorder, self harm, anorexia and suicide. These films bring the real experiences of young people to the screen, combining confronting truths with genuine moments of hope.

Through powerful personal testimony, expert advice, science, as well as stand up comedy and humour, it’s a week that will enlighten, entertain and get young Australians talking.

With one million young Australians affected, and recent reports that ‘more than 50 per cent of young Australians are too embarrassed to talk about mental health issues’ it’s more important than ever to keep the conversation alive.

Premiere films include the landmark return of Stephen Fry’s The Not So Secret Life of a Manic Depressive: 10 Years On, UK rapper Professor Green’s (aka Stephen Manderson) intensely personal journey to uncover the truth behind the suicide of his father - and why suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in Britain in Professor Green: Suicide and Me. Other films include Inside My Mind, Agony of the Mind, Changing Minds Season 2, Football Madness and Me, Diaries of a Broken Mind, Extreme OCD Camp, Crack Up, Suicide and Me, Graceland Happiness Project, a new stand up routine from Felicity Ward inspired by her experiences making ABC2’s Felicity’s Mental Mission for the inaugural ABC Mental As in 2014. We’ll also look at the harrowing experiences in My Self Harm Nightmare and I Took My Baby’s Life and encore triple j’s Hack: Body Obsession discussion program from earlier this year that heard from a range of young Australians.

These films are united by the sensitivity and insight given to a broad range of conditions and treatment programs. They refuse to shy away from the tough realities of living with mental ill-health, but they also often offer moments of hope to those affected, as well as to their families, friends and colleagues.

1 in 5 Australians are affected by mental health.

World Mental Health Day is Monday 10th October.

We’ll be talking about mental ill-health all week – will you?

###20,000 Days on Earth

Sunday 6 November at 8:30pm

Part of ABC’s celebration of Ausmusic Month

Drama and reality combine in a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and international cultural icon, Nick Cave. With startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process, the film examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit.

20,000 Days on Earth is an inventive, lyrical ode to creativity featuring the musician and cultural icon Nick Cave. The film fuses drama and reality by weaving the journey of a fictional day in the life of the rock star, with an intimate portrayal of his artistic process. It is the debut directorial feature film by innovative visual artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard and is set to an original score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard have worked extensively with Cave on various projects over the past seven years and now know him very well.

Forsyth and Pollard recognised this invitation from the resolutely camera-shy Cave was an unmissable, unique opportunity. They started filming, without a plan for what the footage might become, and with unprecedented access began to capture extraordinary moments of Cave’s creative process. “Nick’s surprisingly brutal with his ideas, songs mutate at speed and lyrics are slashed and forgotten” says Pollard of the time spent filming in Cave’s office and the recording studio during the first half of 2012.

Next, Cave agreed to hand over his notebooks, which proved fertile ground for the filmmakers. “We were able to trace the transformation of his ideas”, says Forsyth. “We found disparate phrases which instantly sparked ideas that excited us. This included a calculation to work out how many days he had been alive for on the day they started recording the album, next to the unusually coined phrase ‘20,000 days on earth’.” Pollard adds, “We began to work with the idea of what makes us who we are and what we do with our time on earth.” The phrase ventually spawned the opening line of the film and the pair resolved to structure the film around a fictional narrative of Nick’s 20,000th day.

Directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard; Produced by James Wilson and Dan Bowen; Written by Iain Forsyth, Jane Pollard and Nick Cave; Music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

###OPENING SHOT SERIES 4

FIVE EMERGING FILMMAKERS FIRE THEIR OPENING SHOT

Five young Australian filmmakers are firing their OPENING SHOT on ABC2

Screening from Wednesday, November 16 OPENING SHOT, an ABC and Screen Australia, initiative, is back with a fourth instalment of five half hour documentaries from Australia’s next generation of documentary filmmakers.

Once again putting a range of subjects under the microscope, these films bring a fresh perspective to some of the big issues facing younger Australians. These include: how to spot, and help, a friend suffering domestic abuse; what it takes to enter the political rat race; how a home town is fighting back against the ice epidemic; the unintended consequences and personal cost of digital vigilantism; and the phenomenon that is: psychics.

Through rare access to the Australian psychic medium industry, PSYCHICS IN THE SUBURBS looks at some of life’s big questions; BIG BAD LOVE follows comedian Becky Lucas as she sets out to spot the warning signs of friends who are in an abusive relationship; CANDIDATE GAMES bears witness to two young political idealists as they take on the old guard in the battle to become the Lord Mayor of one of Australia’s capital cities; in END OF THE LINE filmmaker Tom Abood returns to his hometown to find out how they are fighting back against the devastating ice epidemic; and DIGILANTE prompts filmmaker Mike Nayna to confront the real-world impact caused by his own online activism.

This is the fourth season of OPENING SHOT, a vital initiative between ABC and Screen Australia that gives five filmmaking teams, all with a director under 35 years of age, the opportunity to create a prime time documentary film with a younger perspective. These films further develop their filmmaking skills, while also firing an OPENING SHOT into the national conversation.

PSYCHICS IN THE SUBURBS
Screening Wednesday 16 November, 9.30pm on ABC2 & iview
Australia’s psychic medium business is booming and filmmaker Cassie Charlton wants to find out why. Florence King, recently crowned People’s Choice Australian Psychic of the Year, is in the middle of her biggest year yet, and spending time with Florence, and her clients, gives Cassie front row seats to see how the psychics business really works. Following both public performances and private sessions, we meet a range of Australians anxious to contact their deceased loved ones, trying to come to terms with their grief. PSYCHICS IN THE SUBURBS explores who we turn to when the answers seem bigger than the questions themselves.
Director: Cassie Charlton
Producers: Rebecca Barry & Madeleine Hetherton
PSYCHICS IN THE SUBURBS is a Media Stockade film

BIG BAD LOVE
Screening Wednesday 23 November, 9.30pm on ABC2 & iview
Comedian Becky Lucas recently found out one of her closest childhood friends had suffered years of violence and abuse at the hands of her partner. With young women 18-24 being most at risk of abuse, Becky sets out to understand what an abusive relationship looks like, how it begins and why it’s so hard to intervene. She meets experts and psychologists to figure out how she missed the signs, conducts a social experiment on the street to see how the average bystander reacts to domestic violence, and seeks out the stories of young survivors to discover what anyone can do when confronted with domestic violence.
Director: Briony Benjamin
Producer: Susan MacKinnon

CANDIDATE GAMES
Screening Wednesday 7 December, 9.30pm on ABC2 & iview
Money has been flooding into Perth on the back of a decade long mining boom and with an annual council budget of $200 million dollars, the role of Lord Mayor is a tempting prize. The 2015 election attracted a diverse range of young applicants. Candidate Reece is only 28yrs, one of the youngest ever Lord Mayoral nominees, and has a drive and ambition unusual for someone of his tender age. Candidate Mike, 33yrs, is the chalk to Reece’s cheese: an entrepreneur with some big ideas who wants to add Lord Mayor to his impressive and eclectic resume, and turn Perth into a city full of electric cars. Standing in the way of both Gen Y candidates is a popular 2-term incumbent and baby boomer: Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi. The bookies have Lisa as the runaway favourite, yet Reece and Mike may have timed their ‘David vs. Goliath’ attempts to seize power perfectly, with an investigation from The Corruption and Crime Commission looming over her head. The stage is set for an explosive postal election, where three candidates with very different ideas about how to rule a capital city will clash head to head. The results are one thing, how this battle unfolds is quite another. Let the games begin!
Director: Sam Bodhi Field
Producers: Ella Wright and Alice Ross
Executive Producers: Brian Beaton and Celia Tait
CANDIDATE GAMES is a Periscope Pictures film.

END OF THE LINE
Screening Wednesday 14 December, 9.30pm on ABC2 and iview
Nowra, a beautiful intersection of some of Australia’s most alluring beaches, rain-forests, mountains, and farmland, has fallen hard to the hand of Ice. Tom Abood, a young local that left his hometown to follow his dream of becoming a filmmaker, returns to find out if a handful of locals have what it takes to beat the ever-spreading scourge of Ice. Follow Tom as he meets up with familiar faces of his past to see if Nowra can be more than just the end of the line.
Director: Tom Abood
Producer: Kat Cooke
Executive Producer: Ben Ulm
END OF THE LINE is an Artillery House film

DIGILANTE
Screening Wednesday 21 December, 9.30pm on ABC2 and iview
Disillusioned by a revival of public shaming via social media, filmmaker Mike Nayna confronts the real-world damage caused by an online furore he created. In 2012, Mike Nayna uploaded a shaming video that sparked international media attention, resulted in two gaol terms and inspired a surprise spate of copycat incidents. But while the narrative of good conquering prejudice played out on computer screens around the world, a far more complex and morally ambiguous story was taking place. Through exploring the untold story behind the high profile public shaming, Mike must face the unintended consequences of his ‘digitlanism’.
Director/Writer: Mike Nayna
Producers: Lauren Elliott and Mark Conway
Executive Producers: Eddie Martin and Susie Jones
DIGILANTE is a Checkpoint Media/Mad Kids Co-production

###Murdered by My Boyfriend

Wednesday 23 November at 8:30pm

U.K. doco-drama telling the true story of what happens to a teenage girl when she falls in love with the wrong man. The everyday story of young love turns dark and sinister when the handsome and charming stranger seeks to ominate every aspect of the young woman’s life. A tale of contemporary Britain that every young person should watch.

In the U.K. it is estimated that one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime, and the risk of domestic violence is highest for those between 16 to 24 years of age.

Murdered By My Boyfriend, the critically-acclaimed and hugely impactful film that premiered on BBC Three, was written by Regina Moriarty, directed by Paul Andrew Williams, and produced by Pier Wilkie. It tells the true story of one young woman who sadly became an example of these statistics - a bright, bubbly 17-year-old girl who fell in love with the wrong man, and found herself in a relationship that had tragic consequences. The hour-long film features outstanding performances from Georgina Campbell as the young victim Ashley and Royce Pierreson, who plays Ashley’s abusive boyfriend, Reece.

###Big Bad Love: Opening Shot

Wednesday 23 November at 9:30pm

Comedian Becky Lucas recently found out one of her closest childhood friends had suffered years of violence and abuse at the hands of her partner. With young women 18-24 being most at risk of abuse, Becky sets out to understand what an abusive relationship looks like, how it begins and why it’s so hard to intervene. She meets experts and psychologists to figure out how she missed the signs, conducts a social experiment on the street to see how the average bystander reacts to domestic violence, and seeks out the stories of young survivors to discover what anyone can do when confronted with domestic violence.

###Raped

Friday 25 November at 9:20pm

This UK film explores rape in a way in a new and bold way: from forensic medical to police investigation, court and beyond. Juliet was attacked by a stranger on New Year’s Eve, while Kellie had known and trusted her attacker for over a decade. In 2012 St Mary’s, the UK’s leading Sexual Assault Referral Centre, allowed exclusive access: opening its doors to cameras as they supported Juliet and Kellie as well as over 1,000 other victims of rape seeking justice or attempting to move forward with their lives.

St Mary’s Centre in Manchester was the first of the UK’s 46 Sexual Assault Referral Centres. It is here to the small all-female team of doctors, crisis workers and counsellors that the police bring people who say they’ve been raped to conduct a forensic examination. Rape is unlike any other crime. Often there are only two people present and if one person says it was rape and the other says it was consensual, the truth can be difficult to work out and almost impossible to prove. For the experts at St Mary’s, it’s not all about the conviction rate: rather they aim to give victims back their choice and control, whether or not a case goes to court.

Through the experiences of victims, as well as the specialists at St Mary’s, Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Sexual Offences Unit and the Crown Prosecution Service, this film offers a unique and hugely revealing perspective on rape in Britain today.

###No Strings Attached

Sunday 27 November at 3:20pm

This Melbourne-made web series peers beneath the covers of the exhilarating, at times awkward, world of dating apps. No Strings Attached recreates this world with puppets used to re-enact actual dating app dates as told by the people who’ve survived them.

This genre-bending mash-up sees documentary, comedy, drama and reality TV collide. It’s Crank Yankers meets Creature Comforts on the set of The Bachelor. This innovative, off-beat series features voice recordings of people relaying their tales of dating triumphs and woes in 5-7 minute vignettes. Their voices are then lipsynced by a cast of puppets who re-enact their dates for the screen.

The second season to the award-winning Tales from Tinder, No Strings Attached features diverse, dramatic, and daring tales of dating disasters and delights; from the shocking failures, bizarre revelations and embarrassing slip-ups, to the rare stories where true love is found.

This series features stories of people from all walks of life: from a dating app addict who swapped drugs for online dating; to the love sick existentialist who is brutally dumped; to the polyamorous man who gets more than he bargained for when he sets his wife up on a date with his Tinder girlfriend.

From Tinder to Grindr, RSVP to OK Cupid – online dating is no-longer a dirty word for many - it’s the norm.

Whether using it for casual relationships or something more lasting, in the overly saturated market place of dating apps, people are encouraged to shop for their perfect match – but more often than not, users get more (sometimes less) than they bargained for.

On the surface, No Strings Attached is an entertaining comedy, but at its heart it’s a study of modern relationships as mediated by technology, and the surprising and awkward things that happen when we’re trying to connect with another human being.

Originally an i-View exclusive series that was available in July.

###Penn & Teller: Fool Us - Season 3

From Saturday 3 December at 7:30pm

Illusionists Penn & Teller sit in the audience and watch as aspiring magicians try to impress them with a trick that the famous illusionists are unable to duplicate. If a magician successfully hoodwinks the legendary duo with a trick, be it a sleight-of-hand routine or a grand illusion, that person wins a trip to Las Vegas to perform as an opening act in Penn & Teller’s show at the Rio Hotel & Casino. Actress Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, How I Met Your Mother) hosts the series.
