###Frat Boys: Inside America’s Fraternities

Wednesday 21 June at 10:10pm

They’re a thing of urban myth, immortalized in Hollywood films like Animal House, Road Trip, and Revenge of the Nerds. Fraternities, or Frat Houses, are among America’s oldest institutions, responsible for producing 18 Presidents, 80 percent of U.S. Supreme Court justices and 85 percent of Fortune 500 executives since 1900.

But these mostly white, male social groups also have a long dark history of debauchery, violence and even death among their own members. In April 2016, after repeatedly making national headlines, 133 chapters at 55 U.S. colleges were shut down or suspended, after alleged offenses including, excessive drinking, racism and sexual assault.

But thousands of American men count their fraternal experience - and the friendships within it - as the most valuable in their lives.

During one term at the University of Central Florida, the BBC’s award winning This World programme gained unprecedented access inside a fraternity where they followed ‘The Gazoni Family’ Frat boys through the year culminating in Spring Break - the ultimate party for College Students across the United States.

I see no problems here, seems like a normal weekend for me and every uni club in Aus lmao

###Hack Live: Is Male Privilege Bullsh!t?

Tuesday 20 June at 9.30pm

Has feminism swung the pendulum too far towards women? An increasingly vocal group of young men say male privilege no longer exists. They point to lower university enrolments and higher suicide and incarceration rates as evidence of discrimination and diminishing rights.

In the next instalment of Hack Live, Tom Tilley brings Men’s Rights Activists and Feminists together to find out what is it that we just can’t agree on? Debate is guaranteed to be heated, passionate and to split the audience - not necessarily always along gender lines.

###Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

From Tuesday 27 June at 8:50pm

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown follows host Anthony Bourdain, world-renowned chef, bestselling author and multipleEmmy winning television personality as he travels across the globe to uncover little-known areas of the world and celebrate diverse cultures by exploring food and dining rituals.

His first stop during series five is Scotland. Tony first meets up with retired detective John Carnochan over some curry at the Indian restaurant Mother India. Detective John Carnochan has seen it all. But after decades of dealing with generation after generation of violence, he took and unusual and controversial new tactic. He created a special division within the Strathclyde Police called the Violence Reduction Unit and focused their efforts on the social problems that he felt led directly to violent crime.

Tony then meets up with Janey Godley over seafood at the art deco ode to classic seafood restaurants Café Rogano. Janey grew up in the East End of Glasgow, married into an organized crime family, worked as a bartender, and eventually became a famous playwright, author, and stand-up comedian.

Glasgow has had a history of gang violence, and from that, knives, and blades as the weapons of choice. Tony meets up with Mark Davies at an abandoned shipyard to discuss the finer points of knife defence.

For a change of pace, Tony takes a detour from the deeper issues to eat a UK classic – fish and chips. He chooses The University Café, a place he has been on prior trips to Glasgow. This cafe was established by the Verrecchia family in 1918, and is now operated by the fourth generation of the family. Carlo runs the front of the house, and his twin brother Enrico runs the kitchen.

Leaving Glasgow, Tony heads north and into the Scottish Highlands and eventually ends up at a place accessible only by boat across the dark waters of Loch Maree and contained in what is known as the last great wilderness in Scotland – Letterewe Estate.

It is here that he meets up with AA Gill, an outspoken journalist, food critic and author has been coming to Letterewe for over 20 years. Adrian - as he is known to his friends - has promised Tony a go at a true Scottish tradition, stalking a Red Stag in the mountains above the estate. But before the stalking begins, AA’s personal chef Fiona prepares a meal of freshly shot grouse and bread sauce.

###A Girl and A Gun

Monday 26 June at 9:25pm

A Girl and A Gun shows the female perspective on an object whose history is deeply bound to men and masculinity. The classic Hollywood portrayals of pistol packin’ mamas, tomboy sharp shooters, sexually twisted femme fatales, and high-heeled, cold-blooded assassins are caricatures.

In truth, the typical woman who hangs out at rifle ranges and keeps ammo in her purse is the girl-next-door, the single mom, a hard-working sister or aunt. Maybe she’s a realist or has learned tough lessons from life; either way, she cares about her personal safety and may even find salvation, comfort or something satisfying in possessing a gun.

Breaking through the caricatures, A Girl and A Gun reveals America’s diverse and far-ranging female gun community. It depicts how this community is portrayed by the media and targeted by the gun industry; and shows, through personal stories, how guns change women’s lives.

###Copwatchers

Wednesday 28 June at 9:05pm

Copwatchers: The activists using cameras to fight back against police brutality in the US.

Their mission is simple. To protect their people from the police. These are the Copwatchers, citizen activists policing the police, battling against corruption, profiling and increased militarization of the police; and ultimately, the illegal killings in their communities across the USA. Copwatchers want to make serving officers accountable for their actions and push for indictments where possible. These real world “nightcrawlers” scan police radio frequencies, driving across the state and patrolling neighbourhoods. However, the explosive movement is seeing conflicts spiralling between citizens and law enforcement. Police are beginning to lose tolerance with Copwatch, receive anti Copwatch training and use counter intelligence tactics against them. At this critical time in America’s civil rights history, will Copwatch ever be truly successful in its fight for policing reform?

###Louis Theroux: A Different Brain

Monday 3 July at 8:30pm

This powerful film follows the recovery of people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. With access to a specialist brain injury rehabilitation unit, Louis looks at the impact on individuals and their families. With an estimated one million people in the UK living with the long-term effects of a brain injury, Louis explores the issues that some of them have to deal with.

Often called a ‘hidden disability’ because those affected can show little physical signs of change, individuals with Acquired Brain Injury face enormous cognitive, behavioural and personality challenges.

Those affected are left to reconstruct who they are - from relearning the basics of walking, talking and eating, to redeveloping complex personality and behavioural traits, often in the shadow of who they once were.

Louis spends time with staff and service users at the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust, one of the UK’s largest providers of neuro-behavioural rehabilitation, to try and understand how people come to terms with it.

And the impact goes beyond the person directly affected. Family members are often caught between grieving for the loved one they’ve lost and learning to love the person they are now.

Meeting parents, partners, and children of those with brain injuries, Louis looks at how they keep loving and supporting a person who has changed so drastically.

###Destination Arnold
