Classic 100 in Concert
The Classic 100 in concert will be held at Hamer Hall in Melbourne on Thursday night, June 20. Tickets are selling fast.
But today a younger and wider audience is connecting with classical music through very contemporary means: movies, TV, video games and social media.
From string quartets being asked to bring a touch of Bridgerton to a wedding ceremony, an orchestra putting on a concert of video game music, Studio Ghibli inspiring a love of composer Joe Hisaishi, or discoveries of Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony via TikTok, new and passionate audiences for classical music have emerged in the most unlikely of places.
This is the fourth time Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, famous for its finale Ode To Joy, has topped the Classic 100 countdown.
What a fabulous Classic 100 Feel Good over the weekend, culminating in my all time fav composer Beethoven taking top spot. ABC Classic is such a gem of a broadcaster and enriches my soul. If anyone messes with this ABC treasure … well just don’t !

Every year for over two decades, ABC Classic has asked music lovers to nominate their favourite pieces in a particular category and then spend a whole weekend counting down the results. Once voting closes, the top 100 pieces chosen by the public are counted down across two days in June, celebrating Australia’s picks.
The ABC’s Classic 100 Concert 2024 is performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and hosted by Megan Burslem and Jeremy Fernandez.
Beethoven’s ‘Ode To Joy’ has topped ABC Classic’s 2024 Classic 100: Feel Good. Gustav Hoslt’s ‘The Planets, Op. 32’ and Georges Bizet’s ‘The Pearl Fishers’ secured second and third place, respectively, but it was Beethoven’s enduring masterpiece that ultimately won the hearts and minds of music enthusiasts across the country.
It’s a history-making win with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor – famous for its finale ‘Ode To Joy’ – topping the Classic 100 countdown for a fourth time, an extraordinary feat for a symphony that premiered 200 years ago. Head to the ABC Classic website for an in-depth look at the work that claimed this year’s top spot.
