The ABC launches lecture celebrating Chinese Australian contribution to Australia
The inaugural Wang Gungwu Lecture premieres Wednesday 29 June at 8pm on ABC Australia and on ABC iview.
Chinese Australians have contributed to Australia’s business, political, scientific and cultural sectors for more than a century. The Wang Gungwu Lecture aims to shine a light on their achievements.
Renowned pediatrician and former Australian of the Year, Dr. John Yu AC, delivered the inaugural lecture to a live audience at ABC Sydney’s studios on Wednesday 22 June.
Dr. Yu used his address to reflect on his experience as a refugee and to highlight the important contribution made to Australia by migrants: “We need to think more about how we treat migrants, and especially refugees, and accept that sometimes refuges might have something worthy of this country and very often, some of us might be able to repay that debt in a very positive way by the way we live.”
The program will premiere on ABC Australia, the ABC’s international television channel available in 38 countries, on Wednesday 29 June at 8.00pm in Papua New Guinea, 6.00pm in Hong-Kong and Singapore, 5.00pm in Jakarta, 3.30pm in India and on ABC TV in Australia on Tuesday 5 th July at 11am AEST.
It will also be available on ABC iview and ABC Australia iview from 29 June.
The exciting new initiative is the result of a partnership between ABC Australia, the National Foundation for Australia China Relations (NFACR) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and takes its name from Professor Wang Gungwu AO CBE, the pre-eminent scholar on overseas Chinese communities and the Chinese international migration experience.
ABC Head of International Services Claire Gorman said: “The ABC has a proud history of sharing the stories of Australians from diverse background and we are delighted to be helping launch this new lecture celebrating the lives and achievements of Chinese Australians in partnership with our friends at the National Foundation.”
National Foundation CEO Peter Cai said: “The Wang Gungwu Lecture provides an enduring platform for discussion on what it means to be a Chinese Australian today, and there is no one better placed to address this topic than Dr John Yu AC. His continuing commitment to Australian society and Chinese communities is admirable and extensive – from healthcare to the arts, culture and education.”
It will also be available on ABC iview and ABC Australia iview from 4 February as part of the ABC’s Favourites with Chinese Subtitles collection.

Pacific innovation and inspiration explored in new ABC documentary
The documentary uncovers the stories of people across the region, from Tonga to Timor-Leste, driving positive change in their communities.
Produced by Small World Stories for the ABC, the documentary offers insights into how innovation and inspiration are found in diverse corners of the Pacific and Timor-Leste. It draws on a previous ABC Australia shortform series Pandemic Warriors which looked at how people in the Pacific and Timor-Leste had turned the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity to improve their communities.
The new release is hosted by the ABC’s Melissa Maykin, an Australian-Fijian journalist and celebrates resilience, creativity and friendship as locals tackle the region’s challenges, often in collaboration with Australians.
Meet the pioneering Papua New Guinean women’s rugby league team and accompany them as they prepare for the World Cup, inspiring women, and girls to participate in their country’s favourite game. Get to know the brave head of Tonga’s public broadcaster Viola Ulakai who, along with her dedicated team, kept life-saving information going out on the airwaves as Tonga faced a devastating triple disaster of volcano, earthquake and tsunami in January 2022. And travel to the remote highlands of Timor-Leste where you’ll find out how a thriving community is successfully trading on the international carbon market. The documentary also includes stories from the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa and Fiji.
According to Melissa Maykin, “Working on this documentary humbled me in many ways and was a beautiful acknowledgment of the unwavering Pacific spirit. The leaders and innovators at the grassroots in the Pacific have always been there, but their work hasn’t always been acknowledged.”
ABC International Head Claire M. Gorman added, “I am sure this exciting new release for ABC Australia will resonate with audiences across the Pacific and Timor-Leste and beyond. It highlights how people across the region draw on their own strength and resilience to lead change in their own communities, with, at times, a little help from their Australian friends.”

ABC launches ground-breaking new show The Pacific
The 30-minute pan-Pacific news program will be broadcast to Pacific audiences every Thursday, starting Thursday 6 April at 7:00 PM AEST on ABC Australia followed by ABC iview and ABC News Channel.

Designed and created specifically for Pacific audiences, The Pacific is dedicated to covering the stories that matter in the region.
Hosted by ABC presenter Tahlea Aualiitia, The Pacific will be produced in Melbourne and draw on a network of journalists with deep regional expertise including local presenters Evan Wasuka and Johnson Raela and correspondents Lice Movono in Suva, Fiji and Chrisnrita Aumanu-Leong in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
“The Pacific will offer a new way to stay in touch with everything happening in our region which is rich in culture, people and stories,” Tahlea said. “I’m so proud to be hosting this program and to be working with a great team of passionate, respected journalists who are experts in Pacific storytelling.”
The Pacific will be shared with the ABC’s broadcast partners across the region and available in Australia via the ABC NEWS Channel and iview.
ABC Managing Director David Anderson said: “We are excited to see The Pacific launch. It is an innovative addition to the ABC’s content offering for Pacific audiences and an important investment in our regional journalism capabilities which will add additional Pacific newsgathering resources to our existing international network.”
In 2022, the Australian Federal Government confirmed $32 million dollars in funding over four years for the ABC under its Indo-Pacific Broadcasting Strategy (IPBS). The funds will be used by ABC International Services for increased content for Indo-Pacific digital and linear audiences, an expanded FM footprint for ABC Radio Australia and enhanced media and training activities across the Indo-Pacific.
According to Claire M. Gorman, ABC Head International Services: “The Pacific is the first of many exciting developments in the pipeline. We believe it is more important than ever before for Australians and Pacific audiences to have access to independent, trusted information about our region. As we grow our audiences in the Indo-Pacific, expect more fantastic ABC content and programming.”
The journalists and presenters working on The Pacific will contribute stories to the ABC’s other internationally broadcast programs like Pacific Beat on ABC Radio Australia and The World on ABC Australia in addition to the ABC’s domestic broadcast network and digital NEWS channels.
According to Managing Editor Asia Pacific Matt O’Sullivan, “The key aim is to have Pacific voices telling Pacific stories. New team members will enhance the work of the long-standing Pacific team, bringing their extensive local knowledge and content. Meanwhile, new technology, such as mobile journalism kits, is making it easier and faster to tell the stories of the Pacific.”

Huh? On radio you mean?
No, the ABC Australia TV channel, which is the public broadcaster’s Asia-Pacific channel and has been broadcasting AFL matches into the region since it was founded as Australian Television International in the 1990s.
I do believe ABC Radio Australia will also broadcast the match.

The Pacific returns to ABC Australia for a second season
The groundbreaking 30-minute pan-Pacific news program is back on ABC Australia, covering the stories that matter most to the region.
Launched earlier this year, The Pacific returns to its weekly slot from Thursday 3 August at 7:00 PM AEST, available to Pacific audiences on ABC Australia and ABC Pacific Facebook. Audiences in Australia can watch it on ABC iview, ABCTV and the ABC News Channel.
The Pacific Season 2 will deliver the latest in Pacific news, sport, politics and entertainment. ABC reporter Johnson Raela returns as host and is joined by new co-host Alice Lolohea and a team of correspondents with deep regional expertise including Evan Wasuka, Gabriella Marchant, Lice Movono in Suva, Fiji, Chrisnrita Aumanu-Leong in Honiara, Solomon Islands, and Marian Kapu in Nuku’Alofa, Tonga.
According to Raela: “Stepping into the main presenting role this season is exciting and signals the ABC’s long-term commitment to having Pacific people at the forefront of Pacific content. Our network of international correspondents on the ground throughout the region is what I call our ‘superpower’ because their insights into local issues ensure we are telling stories from a lived Pacific perspective.”

ABC Australia’s live coverage of AFL Grand Final day this Saturday (September 30) starts at 11am AEST with the AFLW clash between Collingwood and Essendon, from Melbourne’s Punt Road Oval. It will be followed by pre-match entertainment featuring KISS at 1pm AEST and the match itself at 2.30pm AEST.
ABC Australia’s broadcast concludes at 6.30pm AEST.

ABC Yours for the Pacific Games
Some of the ABC’s favourite Pacific presenters will be based in Honiara throughout the 2023 Pacific Games from 19 November to 2 December, bringing to audiences an exciting schedule of live broadcasts and special programming.

This is the first time the Solomon Islands will host the Games and Honiara will be welcoming over 5,000 athletes competing from 24 participating countries.
The ABC will be providing live broadcasts and special programming on ABC Radio Australia and ABC Australia. ABC Pacific online and social media accounts will offer around-the-clock competition results, interviews, and stories featuring the sporting stars of the games.
That Pacific Sports Show hosts Sam Wykes, Tinirau Arona and Anna-Liza Mopio-Jane will give audiences a sneak preview of the competition venues, a tour of Honiara and talk to those in and around the Games. Episodes will air on ABC Australia on Wednesday 15 and 22 November at 6:00PM PNG time.
ABC Radio Australia’s Agnes Tupou and veteran sports broadcaster Richard Ewart will be broadcasting Pacific Beat from Honiara from 20 to 24 November and Jacob McQuire and Michael Chow from Nesia Daily will be hosting from 27 November to 1 December, with outside broadcasts from the heart of all the action, the National Stadium sports precinct.
During the Games Fresh Off The Field will be live daily from 27 November to 1 December, with host Bobby Macumber broadcasting from the National Stadium sports precinct in Honiara. Bobby will talk to athletes, journalists, and locals as she captures the Honiara Games experience.
The ABC will also play an important role through its media development programs, supporting Pacific media covering the Games and telling Pacific stories. ABC International Development (ABCID) specialist commentators, mobile journalism storytellers and event planning specialists have been working with the national broadcaster, Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC), for much of this year building staff skills and the organisation’s capability to carry out its home host broadcaster role through its radio and online platforms.
ABCID will also oversee a team of Pacific and First Nations Australian women journalists and commentators to provide media support to SIBC. These women come fresh from having completed training at another major regional sporting event, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brisbane and are eager to work with their Solomon Islands’ colleagues. ABCID trainers will continue to mentor SIBC and the Pacific-Australia team throughout the Games. The two media development programs are funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Office for Sport.
ABC International Services Head Claire M Gorman said: “We are excited to be sending our teams to the 2023 Pacific Games and supporting our fellow Pacific media partners to cover the biggest sporting event in the Pacific region.”
Games Organising Committee (GOC) Board Chairman, Martin Rara thanked ABC for coming on board and partnering with the Games. “I believe that having ABC provide live radio broadcast of the Games right throughout Pasifika is an added bonus for the Games and our coverage. We truly value ABC getting on board in helping us deliver a successfully memorable and historical Games,” Mr Rara said.
Head of ABC Sport Nick Morris said: “I’m delighted our sports programs will be on the ground in Honiara talking to the stars of The Pacific Games. I know the teams are really excited to share all the colour and movement of the Games with audiences across the Pacific. and giving audiences some insights into.”

The standalone ABC Australia website is no more. It has now been split into two, and integrated into ABC’s Asia and Pacific portals.

Of the 200 million Indonesians preparing to vote for their next president on 14 February, more than half are under 40. Through candid conversations with young people across the country and exclusive interviews with presidential candidates, Indonesia Decides uncovers the key issues for Indonesia’s more than 100 million Gen Z and Millennials: from dynastic politics to corruption, free speech, the environment and cost of living.
The series also examines how the three presidential candidates are appealing to the key youth demographic and investigates the track records of Prabowo Subianto, Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan – and what their leadership might mean for Indonesia and the world.

Reporter Hellena Souisa sits down for an interview with presidential candidate and former Governor of Central Java Ganjar Pranowo, while reporter Erwin Renaldi Surahman travels to Aceh and Ambon to talk politics with those living far from the Indonesian capital.
Episode 3 – Wednesday 7 February
In the final episode, Hellena Souisa interviews presidential candidate and former Jakarta Mayor Anies Baswedan, Natasya Salim looks at Indonesia’s growing digital economy and Erwin Renaldi Surahman speaks to young voters in three different cities about how they cope with cost-of-living pressures.

Wake up to the best in Australian children’s programming with ABC Australia’s Kids Club
Kids Club is coming to ABC Australia’s Pacific service on Saturday 2 March, with back-to-back children’s shows every Saturday and Sunday morning from 5:00am – 7:00am PNG time.
Kids Club kicks off every weekend morning with a mix of programs perfect for preschoolers and early school-aged kids including Play School, Ready, Steady, Wiggle!, Ginger and the Vegesaurs, Wonder Gang and Lil J & Big Cuz.

ABC Australia will show the 2024 Wang Gungwu Lecture this Friday (March 1) at 8pm Singapore time or 11pm AEDT. The lecture was held in Canberra last night, with Ming Long as keynote speaker.
It will be shown live on ABC Australia this Saturday at 4.30pm Singapore time or 7.30pm AEDT.
