The Guardian Australia’s Amanda Meade writes that Nine Entertainment has signed a two-year print and text deal with AAP. The new contract will see the wire agency service the Sydney Morning Herald, the Age, the Australian Financial Review, the Brisbane Times, WAtoday and nine.com.au. It comes almost three years after Nine – along with co-majority shareholder News Corp – closed the newswire service before it was saved by a group of philanthropists.

In more sad news for journalism, the specialist agriculture and environment rounds at AAP will wind up later this year as their philanthropic funding comes to an end, the AAP CEO, Lisa Davies, has confirmed. Reporters Liv Casben and Tracy Ferrier will depart the wire service when their contracts end.

“Environment and agriculture are important parts of AAP’s core news coverage across the country,” Davies told Beast. “As a not-for-profit media outlet, we are grateful for philanthropic support and it will continue to play a crucial role in AAP’s future, including for specialist content and fact checking.”

Liv will probably end up back at the ABC, or The Guardian.

When Australian Associated Press started rolling out some changes recently to the way the wire service’s freelance photographers were renumerated, they were not happy.

Instead of being paid for a full day’s work for a sporting fixture, they would be given a half day, or four hours work, under a “revised agreement”. Sources say covering a fixture is more than just the elapsed time of the game; it’s a full day’s work.

According to an email seen by Weekly Beast, AAP has since clarified the arrangement.

Each assignment across news and sport will be assessed individually and the majority will be a full day shift.

However, if a photographer secures a full day assignment they “may be required to cover news and stock visual content where warranted”.

Details about the deal have not been disclosed, but the newswire will open up its news content to Google to “help enhance the usefulness of results displayed in the Gemini app”.
