IIRC It’s the first time the show announces the overseas destination in advance. Previously we found out where the contestants were going via leaks to News Corp reporters.
It’s five years since the franchise visited California (the second season of Junior MasterChef Australia was filmed at Disneyland and LA beaches in 2011).
So happy the show is taking contestants outside Australia after a two-year break.

According to the article at MasterChef website, the judges and remaining contestants will visit San Francisco, the Napa Valley, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and San Diego. A week of episodes will be filmed, meaning they will spend about two weeks in America.

Five More Cooks In The Running For MasterChef 2016.

MasterChef Australia’s latest round of contestants are Michaela Johansson, Theresa Visintin and Jimmy Wong from Sydney, Perth’s Karmen Lu and rural Queensland’s Miles Pritchett.

These five contestants are the latest hopefuls in the running to compete in the audition round of MasterChef Australia in 2016.

For the first time ever on MasterChef Australia, sibling rivalries will be put to the test as 44-year-old mother of three Theresa battles her own brother Jimmy, a 59-year-old sustainability specialist, in an effort to secure a coveted spot in the Top 24 (both pictured). As one of their dreams shines brighter, whose will be extinguished? Click here to meet Theresa and Jimmy.

In a bid to impress the judges, 23-year-old student Michaela attempts the most ambitious audition dish MasterChef Australia has ever seen: a croquembouche. With only an hour to complete this incredibly complex dessert, has Michaela bitten off more than she can chew? To see if Michaela’s tower of terror stands up to the judges click here.

Perth waitress Karmen, 24, is normally quite shy and reserved outside of the kitchen, but make no mistake about her ambitions. This quietly competitive cook plans to wow the judges by playing to their biggest weakness, chocolate. Click here to see Karmen’s sweet revenge.

Typical Aussie bloke Miles is a 46-year-old park ranger who likes nothing better than cooking on an open campfire, but will his meat pie served in a tin be enough to set the judges taste buds on fire? To hear what the judges have to say click here.

Tune in to see which hopeful will make it past the audition round and through to the Top 24 of MasterChef Australia in 2016.

Gary, George and Matt has been posting photos of their Californian trip on Instagram all this week. Sounds like lots of fun.

I’m so glad that they are doing an overseas trip again, it was always a highlight of the earlier seasons.

From memory they visited California on Masterchef Kids.

I agree,I’m glad the contestants have an overseas trip this season,I’m guessing it will be the final 6 contestants maybe?I like when they have to do team challenges in an unfamiliar country, when they don’t know their way around ,when they have to purchase their ingredients for whatever they’re cooking.

Great news about the California trip. The show is much better when it travels.

Is there any news on the start date? I’m sure they’ll want it finished before the Olympics begin on Friday 5 August, which probably means the finale will be no later than the Monday or Tuesday that week. If it’s only 12 weeks again then it will have to start no later than 10 May (last year 5 May), but I hope they add a week and start on 2 or 3 May. I don’t know when MKR finishes.

First Apron Awarded For MasterChef 2016

MasterChef Australia’s first contestant to be awarded a much-coveted apron for the class of 2016 is Adelaide’s Nidhi Mahajan.

Born in India, 30-year-old call centre worker Nidhi and her husband immigrated to Australia three years ago seeking a simpler life.

Cooking regularly since she was just 12 years old, Nidhi was initially discouraged by her father to pursue a profession as a chef, instead studying finance and accounting.

Nidhi has reached a now-or-never moment and is determined to make food her future. While Indian cuisine is one of her specialties, she hopes to educate people that Indian food is not just about curries and tikkas.

Tune in to see which other hopefuls will make it past the audition round and through to the Top 24 of MasterChef Australia in 2016.

This is the first time ever Ten has revealed the name of a top 24 contestant before the show goes to air. Why does Ten do that?

Beats me. A strange thing to do if we are going to see that again in the auditions. I don’t want to know in advance who gets in.

maybe when the series starts they’ll just cut straight to the chase (top 24) and not show us the audition stages?

I think in the past even when the lead up to the final 24 has been shown, they don’t show all the contestants in detail. There are usually quite a few that get through that you don’t see very much of.

I thought so too until I re-read TV Cynic’s post, which says to “tune in”. I guess that means to watch the auditions on the show, but if they skip the auditions I guess there will be another 23 announcements!

I find the auditions a bit boring at times and I always can’t wait to get them over with and start the show properly, but I don’t want to skip them either. They are important for setting up the competition and you get to see the top contestants and eventual winner as equals with the rest of the top 50 hopefuls at that stage.

I’ve seen the promos for the new season of Masterchef, but still no definite start date, only “coming soon”

I think Ten is waiting for Seven to reveal the date for My Kitchen Rules grand final (which should be in the guide in TV Week out tomorrow) before announcing the season premiere date.

I’d be surprised if the MKR final was next week - more likely Sunday 1 May IMO

Or the next day. I think it was on a Monday last year.

That’s definitely what Ten is doing. MKR has dragged on and on. End already so Masterchef starts!

As much as I have loved this season of MKR it is so repetitive. I am looking forward to Masterchef. For some reason it doesn’t have the repetition that MKR has.
