i98FM Illawarra Convoy kicks off after massive $1.3m fundraising effort
All is in readiness for another spectacular i98FM Illawarra Convoy, following a mammoth fundraising effort.
This week’s Lead Truck Auction and Lead Bike Auction shattered all expectations, pushing the total amount raised over the past 21 years to an incredible $29,030,337.
After a thrilling live auction, the team from Ross Transport supported by Amarli’s Army will proudly lead the trucks, having secured the coveted position with a phenomenal $305,000 donation.
The convoy takes place this Sunday (November 16) departing GM3 Appin at 8.15am.
What is Marty’s on-air involvement for this? Has he been back on Brekky a fair bit?
He has co-hosted the Breakfast show with Christian and Bella over the past couple of days, and the three of them also went on air at 11am yesterday for the Convoy truck auction.

They should convert ABC Radio Illawarra from 97.3 FM to 1386 AM.
It was on the AM band in the 80s. Good idea but I don’t think it will happen.

No they should not.
I’d imagine the am signal would get out along the coastline very well but anything inland would not be good especially up the highlands. I would say they would need to get frequency lower down the dial closer to 702 am to get the coverage required.
Anyway NewsRadio launched with the same spec on 90.9 FM. It’s a great spot where they transmit from to cover the coast and to some extent inland. 2st should switch on 88.5 in Kiama.

Agree probably no need to change anything re Illawarra ABCs … if they really wanted to put Local Radio back on AM on a high power AM frequency, it could go to 603am and RN at Nowra could then move to the old 999 2ST AM frequency.

why should they? Also there is a 1386 (HPON) assigned to Penrith which might be an issue.

It is unlikely any new commercial radio stations will start in Wollongong in this day and age. I think that window has closed even if there was space on the FM Band. It is a shame they should have 3 commercial stations like Gosford has. Wave FM should adopt the same playlist as 2ST instead of Power FM so at least there is a station in Wollongong for an older demographic.

92.5 would be the only option…as a kid I even looked there occasionally to see if a new station would pop up (not knowing anything about the allocation process)! I did eventually get Southern Star FM on there.
You’d have to move 92.3 2UUU and 92.7 2BAB for this to happen, though. There is space down the end of the dial for these lower powered services; 89.3 and 90.1 come to mind (allocated but never used in Batemans Bay).
You might also have to move ABC Central Coast even though we have the existing 98.1 co channel. I’d wager a lot more people listen to 92.5 than 98.1 up there.

Yes it rated a 5 vs 0.8 up there in the last Central Coast survey at the end of 2024.
The ABC have been wanting to increase 92.5 from 200 watts to 2 kw as well.
92.5 FM does need 2kw. 98.1 Newsradio does need to move because of i98 and Power FM. Old topic wrong thread

That would give 702 de facto FM coverage across many parts of the Sydney metro, particularly across the moneyed and ageing Upper North Shore 
Yes I think 92.5 will remain a low powered allocation for the Southern Highlands in that case.

Off topic, but I find 2BL to be at least somewhat listenable during its local talk hours. 2CN by comparison is insufferable- too lightweight for me.
702 is just good enough for a DX Nerd to listen to between Bungendore and Braidwood, except when a supercell is nearby.
