WIN News

I am actually surprised that WIN has tried doing a weekly 1 hour news review to air late Saturday night and repeated on WIN, One and 11 the next day. It wouldn’t cost that much, more just editing parts of the bulletins that air each day throughout with week, with Geoff Phillips and possibly another host co-anchoring it, only needing to film the intro and the closing to the weekly edition. The Sunday encore could air at 8am (or 8:30am to back onto Studio 10 Sunday)

And the WIN News Newcastle update I saw at 5.40pm today had some video footage that looks like would have been shot locally by WIN.

Really don’t know why they don’t go head to head with NBN News at 6 in Newcastle.

Newcastle is by far the largest city / TV market in the nation with only one news service. The market has 700k - it’s huge and for the taking.

NBN offers a so so product.

WIN could do it’s “purely local Newcastle news” at 6 thing.

Dude, it’s all about money: will the investment provide adequate returns?

(Besides, Old Bruce is spending it all in his frivolous lawsuit) :joy:

If you say so. But do you seriously think that WIN’s product is better?

At WIN’s current state, and knowing NBN’s dominance in the Hunter, WIN News will get nowhere especially competing against a Live bulletin from NBN. Even the relay from Seven Sydney might rate higher.

From what I’ve seen of it, the content of WIN News isn’t horrible but it’s not that great either IMO.

The chances of NBN News being knocked off top spot in Newcastle? Possibly about the same as Southern Cross News Tasmania or Seven News Perth being beaten in the ratings - very slim to none.

If I had to choose between the two, I’d actually prefer to watch NBN News over Seven News Sydney in it’s current state!

@Nick will it provide adequate returns? I don’t know.

But Newcastle is a huge TV market. It is underserved by local news with no competition for NBN. And the station WIN just bought is the lowest rating Ten affiliate in that nation. All that means there is opportunity for growth. It can really only go up. And with NBN becoming Nine and losing local branding - perhaps there is a real opportunity for WIN to position itself a Newcastle station - and that would start with local news at 6. A stronger local news at 6 would help lift the whole schedule - and in the largest regional market in the country - that could be worth some $$. So yes you have dos pend $$ but I believe there is potential there.

@SydneyCityTV would never expect it top knock NBN off as #1. But it can be a competitive #extra

I think it is more likely WIN will start abandoning full local news bulletins in regional markets in favour of northern NSW style noodle updates. A massive dummy spit is coming now that so much money has been wasted in the vain attempt to acquire Ten. Bruce will be looking to recoup his losses and I fear a slash and burn is about to be unleashed at WIN.

I was talking about comparing Seven News Sydney and WIN News if it ever expanded to NNSW.

Just watching a recording of WIN News and having a good chuckle. Reporter is doing vox pops in the main street of Shellharbour Village holding a mic with half the WIN mappy logo scratched off the mic flag.

Noticed Melissa Russell did the updates today. So I’m guessing she’s based in the 'Gong?

Also, I’ll assume the same updates run across Gold Coast and Far North Coast (Lismore/Byron etc). Not sure how many people on the Gold Coast care about what’s happening at Richmond Valley Council in Casino but whatever.

Southern Cross Ten aired Gold Coast-centric updates on their service for Lismore and the Far North Coast when I saw it about five years ago.

Rather interesting how the situation seems to have reversed with the change to WIN, especially if the Gold Coast is still getting Brisbane’s Ten Eyewitness News: First At Five on weekdays rather than the Sydney version.

Has it been confirmed that WIN Gold Coast always get the Ten Brisbane news?

Yes. Eyewitness News Updates, promos and bulletin all come from Brisbane.

Isn’t that as it should be, Brisbane would be much more relevant than Sydney to Gold Coast viewers?

Well, yes. But viewers can also watch the Brisbane bulletin on Ten Brisbane which is also available on the Gold Coast so it’s really the same bulletin at 5pm but with different ads and promos.

Prime7 Gold Coast rebroadcasts the Sydney bulletin only because Seven don’t want them taking away eyeballs from their Brisbane bulletin.

Seems like Bruce had forgotten to switch the GC boards to Sydney. Sydney-siders then won’t gonna see Sandra Sully’s journalistic excellence up there, along with that “pumping up” Daily Bailey.

If you’re bothered getting a larger aerial you could pick up WIN Lismore from Mt Nardi without too much trouble. A large percentage of the population doesn’t bother with this though.

Sandra Sully’s parents apparently live on the Gold Coast. Perhaps that’s what they do?

I don’t know, but it’s up to her parents on who are they watching on weeknights.
