WIN News

Same scenario here in Tasmania, 5.35pm start. I wonder whether WIN will have a recorded piece from Candice to play advising the viewers or just abruptly cut from the metro to local news? Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the latter.

Here’s how they handled it in NSW:

Well that was horrible :joy:

Why? They went to the trouble of preparing something rather than just a cold switchover.

remember when win news said that’s were we leave 9 news last year

Brent instead opted for a purple tie and Santa hat (in case unaware this colour is in reference to the local BBL team).

Sophie Ryan - Sunshine Coast tonight

It seems as though WIN News Sunshine Coast is now posting reports after they’ve aired on terrestrial television to their Facebook page on the night of broadcast, rather than a day or so afterwards or as requested by viewers.

Highlights of the abbreviated 5:45 pm WIN News Sunshine Coast from yesterday. WIN are including a short segment each night this week on the main local news events of 2016.

With all the changed and headwinds - do we not think it would have been better to leave WIN News at 6, and run the first 30 minutes of Big Bash on One and 11, and hen join Big Bash at 630 on WIN?

They could put a small bug up on the news “Big Bash - now on One / 11” with channel logos.

I don’t think so. Live sport gets viewers but making them change channels isn’t a good idea (even for a company like WIN which likes to irritate viewers with the shitstain), and 90 minutes of news is too long anyway.

Totally agree, I think what they’ve done in this instance is pretty good - though could’ve been better executed to create a more seamless transition. It gives the network an opportunity to possibly pick up extra viewers who might’ve switched early for the BBL and they’ll catch the end of the local news so not a bad idea in theroy.

The other option would have been working with TEN and inserting the WIN Local News windows for regional areas from around 5:30-5:45pm during Eyewitness News (easiest way without missing the top stories, sport & weather) to continue a seemless flow of news across the hour and potentially working with a more viable format year round moving forward.

Of course this would’ve actually required a little more work, some forethought and for WIN to update some of their production elements like the keyed backdrop, theme music etc to be better aligned with their new affiliate of nearly 6 months and less like the former.

WIN want that confusion; they’re dragging it out for as long as they think it gives them some tiny bit of a ratings boost, along with the Nine-like colour scheme, & the same rounded font WIN logo they were using when a Nine affiliate.
The answer to fitting-in with network schedules is for affiliates to have their own combined local/national/international news like Nine will introduce in February (and the metros have had…forever).

WIN, ideally should retire the WIN branding across all services and rename to ten, drop full news bulletins and insert local news at 5:45pm during ten NEWS and another insert sometime during The Project and focus heavily on delivering news through social media.

BTW is it affordable or profitable for ten to buy WIN completely?

Legally, Ten can’t buy WIN at the moment because of the 75% reach rule.

In any case, I agree that WIN (both in news & generally) should rebrand to Ten but we all know the reasons why that isn’t likely to happen anytime soon. WIN News is probably going to be absolutely cooked in the ratings once the new services on SCA Nine start up!
