The State of Origin was the only show in town last night delivering Nine a massive 47% network share. 1.78 million tuned in including over 700k in Sydney and over 600k in Brisbane as the game went down to the wire. It was also the top non-news program in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Nine’s share was up 3 points on last year though the linear audience was down from the 1.91 million that tuned in for game one of the 2021 series. In that year an additional 228,000 tuned in on 9Now nationally; Nine would be expecting a higher number this year.

Elsewhere it wasn’t the best night to launch a new season on Gruen, however the show help up with almost 500k tuning in; that compares to last season’s debut that had 688,000.

Over on 10, MasterChef’s audience was fairly loyal, despite slipping by 60k from the previous Wednesday it ranked as the top entertainment show of the night in the key demos and helped 10 to rank second in the demos for the night.

Big Brother suffered the most against the competition dropping 70k from the previous week to a season low.

SOO only attracted 220,000 in Melbourne despite increased promotions on radio in the days leading up to the match.

The new season of Gruen rated OK against SOO, but the figures suggest the ABC could have waited one more week before launching the show.

Nine News won Sydney and Brisbane and did decent in Melbourne and Adelaide. Unfortunately they did horrible in Perth, with Seven having x4 the viewers, although the bulletin was at 5.

Despite Origin ratings down from last year, This helped Nine win the night easily. I get the feeling with the declining Ratings, more people are going into alternate streams on 9Now.
The crowd at accor stadium in Sydney was good—80.5k at the venue.
The next game at Optus Stadium should be a sold out with 61k attending the match.

220k is a good figure for an event Victoria has no involvement in.

It also comfortably beat The Front Bar which is a good rating show in Melbourne.

Considering Big Brother only rated a little more than that NATIONALLY, then that’s a great figure for Melbourne.

This is why the OzTam overnights for live events can not really be trusted anymore.
425k would be the 16th highest rating show of the day. Add that to the Origin overnight numbers and it looks very healthy and makes up about 1/5th of the numbers.
Seeing some Twitter commentary :tv: about the numbers and I think it’s about time certain accounts realise numbers aren’t going back to what they were 10 years ago.
Maybe 7 were on to something about abandoning overnight numbers/not having them released.

The 450k number is quite extraordinary but it is a national number. About 2/3 of that is usually the metro component.

please, we all know regions outside the 5-city metro don’t have the internet yet

seriously though - that is true, but I guess to my original point the maths would be slightly off vs. national but it represents a major portion of the viewers that are watching via a different method.

Ratings for the last 2 years would have been COVID lockdown inflated.

Now that we are out and about again, more will be watching in pubs and clubs and other peoples houses last night, which are not accounted for in the ratings.

The series finale didn’t rate too badly against State of Origin.
