Despite problems with the weather in England, 9Gem recorded an impressive 13.1% share putting Nine more than 10 points clear of rivals. Nine managed a rare win in all markets (including regional) with 9Gem outrating Nine’s main channel in Melbourne and Perth. 10 did best in Brisbane where the main channel outrated Seven. Nine won the key demos with 10 second in all.

ABC’s fortunes suffered the most at the expense of the cricket with big drops across the line-up. The Bachelor also dropped from last week and The Block hit a season low with The Front Bar particularly hard hit, unable to make the top 20, performing best in Melbourne where it ranked 9th.

Ratings for the opening day of 4th Ashes test in 2015:
THE ASHES: FOURTH TEST-ENG V AUS SESSION 1 -D1 Gem 848,000
THE ASHES: FOURTH TEST-ENG V AUS SESSION 2 -D1 Gem 369,000

ABC’s line-up was particularly hit hard by the cricket, and will have to rely on timeshifting to get back to near their season averages.

Outside the top 20, The Front Bar was 21st, My Life Is Murder 22nd. Nine’s new US drama Grand Hotel lost over 100k from last week’s debut to rank 28th for episode one with episode two 80k lower again.

Week to date has Nine on 31.2 and Seven 25.8. Nine also leads the key demos with 10 second.

Must say, despite its lackluster performance, I have been enjoying Grand Hotel.

Me too. It’s my guilty pleasure. I hope Nine will persevere with this despite its poor ratings.

So much for Seven always boasting about showing sports almost everyday of the year. Nine doesn’t even need that to stay ahead.

Disappointing ratings for My Life is Murder, especially given that it’s had decent lead ins. The series really hasn’t taken off, unlike Five Bedrooms. Proof that script is more important than big name Stars.

Funny you say that, despite its very hammy acting and soap opera-ish on prime time, I’m also enjoying this rubbish Grand Hotel. Anyhow, even if Nine bumps it to a 1am slot, I reckon one can still catch it on 9Now.

Not sure how those comments reconcile with your opinion of Les Norton

My Life Is Murder also does well in consolidated. It also outrated Les Norton despite having cricket as competition and in the demos has more than double the audience of ABC’s drama.

I’d classify Grand Hotel in the misses column for 2019. Last night’s audience across the 2 episodes was lower than 2 repeat episode of NCIS achieved on Tuesday night. Not a good sign for episode 2 and 3 of a new series.

Thanks for making my point. Just trying to show how silly it is to comment about a program without including time shifted. To be fair, Les Norton has also been up against cricket at times (not last week). Nor has it benefited from a good lead in.

The disappointing aspect to Les Norton’s numbers (apart from terrible demos) is that each week’s rating have been lower than the previous both the overnight numbers and the catch up.

Again, MLIM has had a similar trajectory.
Demos, whilst not unimportant, are not the be all and end all for the ABC. They are much more important for commercial networks. Whilst MLIM’s may be better, they’re hardly up there with those of Five Bedrooms for example.

Just to avoid any confusion, here are last night’s cricket ratings in chronological order.
