The first game of the delayed State of Origin saw Nine score a big win on Wednesday night. Nine’s share, however was well down on usual numbers with ABC News election coverage also mitigating the result. Nine was close to 50% in Sydney and Brisbane, also winning in Melbourne and Adelaide while Seven was an easy winner in Perth. 10 managed to score second place in the key demos.

Origin recorded almost 1.6 million in preliminary overnight numbers. That compares to 2.181 million for last year’s opening game. With all other recent game one results over 2.3 million.

Most programming was negatively impacted by the rugby league though The Bachelorette was on par with recent results.

Nine News numbers down due to unusual start times across the states.

The Planet America Special on ABC News ranked 20th with other ABC News shows dominating the multichannel top 20.

Origin was trounced by Seven News in Perth.
Planet America special did well on ABC News but not on main channel. Another big audience for Bluey.

What happened to The Chase Australia: Was it out of the Top 20?

It probably wasn’t on due to election coverage in most states.

DEspite a drop off in Ratings, A delayed State of origin drive channel 9 to a win. I think some viewers are getting tired of rugby league being played during November. Some viewers were at pubs watching the match. Adelaide viewers provided a win last night due to the game being played ar Adelaide oval. As well, I was even surprised that the Adelaide market even outrated the Perth market.
The crowd at Adelaide Oval was about 25,218 people from last night. This was the highest NRL crowd at the venue. I still think that this is a good crowd, despite the capped restrictions.

The Chase was only coded in 3 states but even there I believe it was only shown in Perth.

Same for Hot Seat - it is listed, but didn’t go to air.

I thought The Project had fantastic coverage last night. But it is a pity it was cut short in some states for The Bachelor. Could they have not had it on Bold or Peach for viewers to switch over and continue watching.

I didn’t watch the project show (as I was watching the nrl match) but I would have thought that the show was delayed into Perth. Literally The Rugby league match was still playing while the project was on in the Perth market.

They broadcast a 2nd edition live which aired at 6.30pm in Perth and 9.30pm Melbourne/Sydney

It didn’t air at 9:30 in Melbourne. Bull did. It may have been the plan but they reverted back to regular scheduling (again with no notice)

Trying to work out the exact ratings for US election coverage is difficult. There are multiple codings, there are simulcasts plus there are coding for shows that didn’t go to air.

The following is very general. If there is interest I can prepare a detailed listing in a news article.

ABC 7pm news was also seen on ABC News with the combined audience ranking 5th.

The highest rated dedicated program was Planet America special. When the 2 broadcasts are taken into account on ABC at 9.30 and earlier on ABC News. It would have rated just outside the top 10.

The next best results are all ABC codings for their coverage - all would have made the top 20 (combined ABC + ABC News). ABC’s coverage was roughly equal to the combined audience of Seven and Nine.

Next comes Sunrise and News Breakfast Extended (though not just election coverage) followed by more ABC entries.

The ratings entry for Seven’s coverage ranked 37th with Nine’s 42nd. 10’s coverage rated about one third of Nine’s ahead of SBS’s coverage that just managed to beat the top pay TV coverage that was from Fox News, marginally ahead of the Sky News entry.

The ratings for the commercials were lower that received by normal afternoon programming.

Fair enough, my Foxtel EPG showed The Project as starting at 9.42 (or similar) after The Bachelorette.

No, the masked singer aired after bachelorette. And yes the project was coded at 9:30 for me (and reported by TV tonight) as an encore but come 9:45 it changed to bull with the project repeated at 11:30 as originally scheduled.
Very peculiar

Great prime time figures for ABC News channel. Their coverage was very good considering it was doing its own thing without affiliates.

9 integrated the outstanding CNN coverage very well.

Apart from a brief period after midnight AEDT where the CNN feed cut out and they went to a backup feed of NBC4 which was showing a local morning news including weather report for the Los Angeles local area!

Nine had outstanding coverage with US Election all day only breaking for Origin and local news before continuing using the resources of CNN with overnight coverage. ABC had huge ratings too

I wonder if the ratings are high enough to reconsider putting State of Origin at the end of year in one package for 3 weeks. I personally really like this way. October doesn’t have much sport on. We do need to think on the international game too. NZ/Fiji/Samoa/Papa New Guinea/England etc can have some regular games then too. The only issue might be some of the state of origin may want to play for the island nations . After the state of origin maybe Australia can play one test.

There is a world cup next year so it might “spoil” that plan.

I think next year, the NRL should reconsider having State of Origin back to June-July period. Look at the ratings last night, especially for Perth. 52k viewers watched it in Perth. The reason why the ratings are low is because the telecast started at 4PM (Perth Time). I find this figure to be quite disappointing. Some poeple were at work. The numbers have dropped off after the 2020 NRL Season ended.
Beside that, the crowd at Adelaide Oval looks quite good. Despite Adelaide being an AFL city, the crowd numbers are great. The State of Origin attendance was slightly higher than the AFL Preliminary Final between Port Adelaide Power and Richmond.
