New Amsterdam smashes Undercurrent. MAFS hits new high. MKR slips.

Decent night for Nine with Married at First Sight going back up and New Amsterdam enjoying a good start (even with several episodes already available on 9Now). The only bad news for Nine is the low figures for the return of Talking Married, which fell outside the multichannel top 20.
Both MKR and I’m a Celebrity slipped from Tuesday.
Undercurrent’s ratings could have been higher, but legal reasons prevented more widespread promotions via newspaper and radio etc.

Married at First Sight climbs higher to season high while MKR and I’m A Celebrity dropped to lows. Celebrity beats MKR in two of the demos.

Disappointed for Rosehaven’s new season. Seems to be one week ahead of the rest of ABC’s schedule. New Amsterdam does OK for a news US drama, well ahead of competition.

MAFS was up almost 200,000 viewers on the comparable episode that aired last year. MKR down around 300,000 viewers.

Why do they bother proceeding to production phase at all if there are pending legal issues?

I remember seeing a TV ad on Nine in December, saying 9Now was streaming New Amsterdam.

MKR being beaten by Celebrity in demos is not good. The brand is fast losing its sparks.

New Amsterdam does well. Undercurrent…no words.

Are you sure it wasn’t Manifest. New Amsterdam has not appeared in any ratings for 9Now.

Seven were warned and failed in their efforts to prevent further audience erosion. The brand is dying and succession planning has failed or not been properly executed.

I tried giving the show a go this year, it is awful. I’m not sure what gave it the appeal and strong hold it has enjoyed for 8-9 years. There is barely any real cooking content.

MAFS appears to be where viewers are going for their bitchy reality drama.

Some people will be happy to see its demise. IMO the show has gone off worse than previous years. They think adding more ‘bitching’ will work out but they don’t realise that the bitching is the actual problem.

I found this article on TV Tonight from October last year:

Nine will offer new episodes of Manifest, New Amsterdam and Amy Poehler comedy I Feel Bad on 9Now over summer and into 2019.

Unless Nine changed its plans since then and did not stream New Amsterdam ahead of last night’s TV debut?

Back to reality for I’m a Celeb with MAFS the clear winner. Ten got lucky with the BBL being so toxic lately but it doesn’t take much for viewers to go elsewhere.

MAFS back up above debut but now MKR slips and I’m A Celeb slips further.

I hope the failure of Undercurrent will put an end to all these true crime shows.

Totally forgot it was on. Lucky I have it series tagged to record.

Lack of superior alternatives (subjective opinion of course), authentic characters and a genuine interest in the food genre. See the more successful a ‘reality’ show tends to become, the more contrived the characters and conversations tend to be and that’s why people turn off IMO. MAFS will get there eventually but it does have shorter seasons working in its favour.

The seasons are too long and episodes too stretched out. The conflict is fine if it doesn’t feel forced. I think loyal viewers know in earlier seasons it wasn’t there as much and perhaps they’re questioning why it is there now? Kind of like “this isn’t what we signed up to when we entered the relationship vibe”. With MAFS people know that’s exactly what they’re getting and signing up for.

Talking Married on 9Life missed the top 20 in multichannels and also the top 5 demos. More people watch it on the main channel at 11pm.

The 5-city rating for the BBL last night would have ranked 41st overall on the FTA list of programs.

Outside the top 20 were Fahrenheit 9/11 that did well for SBS at 23rd, Chicago Med 24th. Law and Order was only 27th.

No episodes apart from yesterday’s ep 1 are on 9Now that I can see and it didn’t get any VPM ratings so Nine must have changed plans.

People have been saying it for a while so it was a strange decision for them to actually make each episode longer this year. 2 hours a night is a massive commitment and less and less people are willing to do that. Would have been wiser to keep it shorter so viewers don’t lose interest.

Would have been wiser to keep the 7.30pm start time as well! I was initially encouraged with the early promos and “it’s all about the food” but then the conflict promos started. I felt there was an opportunity to tone down the emphasis on conflict and mix in a little more cooking. Commercial radio in Brisbane yesterday was saturated with ads for MKR and “what secret will XXX reveal”?

Masterchef has remained relatively successful because it has stayed true to its format. I think it tried to detour once and ratings went down, then it went back to a food focus.

I have no sympathy for Seven because of the way they’ve handled this. The ratings it is getting are the ratings it deserves. The other contributing factor could be the idiot judging it. Pete Evans is a disgrace and his random forays into public discourse could be a turn off. Saying shit like sunscreen is bad and all the other stuff would turn people off. Credibility wanes easily.
