Only they know the true answer to this but I’d say all of the above, doubles down on the fact that they are the FTA home of Cricket and might’ve snagged them for a too good to pass up price amongst a lack of interest or complacency from other networks.

Weather delays cannot be helped and it’s only a couple of days anyway, people will find it in their schedule no matter where they schedule it - people are fairly smart with chasing sports around channels and platforms nowadays given the fragmentation of sports rights.

Anyway, we’re getting a bit off track here (no surprises for Sully ) but can only see how this plays out the next few days.

But all of that is based on the assumption that Seven have overpaid for it. All reports point to Fox picking these series up for next to nothing late in the day in the past, something that Seven have done this time.

If they’ve picked up these rights for cheap, which seems the most likely scenario, I can’t imagine how 7 wouldn’t be ecstatic with a 31% share up against MAFS.

Taking nothing away from 9 and MAFS, they’re great numbers; but sheesh, 7 can’t do anything right in some peoples eyes.

It’s a TV ratings discussion forum and that’s what we’re doing, including analysis of the rights acquisition and potential benefits or not and comparing to rivals’ performances. No?

I guess we can properly evaluate after Idol’s launch, that being the big picture and Q1.

Nine has a rare win in all 5 city markets.

The cricket (showing on 7Mate) seems to have impacted 7News.

Good win for 9News in Brisbane.
Another clean sweep for Tipping Point.

550k in Sydney and 768k in Melbourne combined program averages last night is very good for FTA TV (including bvod).

And slowly it falls as TP returns…

Yeah of course it is. In my opinion if a product you’ve (I’m assuming) paid little for helps you get 31% against the biggest show on TV in this country, it’s self evident what Seven are getting out of the series.

And whilst there’s always the risk of poor weather and shortened/ one sided matches with test cricket, it would be remarkable if that didn’t help inform Seven’s bid.

There’s a fair bit to be critical of with Seven’s actual handling of the match yesterday ie channel changes, set, host etc, but I just don’t think the actual numbers it delivered on day 1 could have Seven concerned.

That’s the 5 city result, where the total audience was 338k.

Compared to last week on the same night where it got 363k, any fluctuations when you’re starting from a lower base are more obvious.

I believe still above average and up YOY.

I imagine they saw what happened with tennis vs Chase in recent weeks (with the latter getting very high figures due to no game show competition) and didn’t want to give TP a similar free ride. I suspect had they taken Chase off TP would have rated even higher - noting that Chase did easily win Reach yesterday - as awful as that metric is

I would point out though, as I’m sure we all know, it is a lot easier for Seven to achieve such shares than other networks, thanks to their consistent strong performance in Adelaide, especially Perth, regional Qld, Sth Nsw, Vic, Tas and Wa.

If you look to the traditional 5 City Metro metrics, it’s usually always a very different story.

Seven pushed for VOZ and they got what they wanted.

Look fair enough if your argument is that under the old ratings system, Nine would have had a bigger win last night. I agree with that. It doesn’t affect the point I’m making though in that, with today’s metrics, to get within 4 points of Nine with MAFS in the lineup is as good a result as Seven could hope for imo.

A thought I’ve had on this- a lot of people have turned off FTA in recent years for entertainment programming (given the sheer volume of alternative viewing options these days), but will still watch FTA for things like the footy or cricket or tennis that are shown live.

I wonder how many of Sevens viewers for the cricket are viewers that (with the end of the BBL and Tennis) would otherwise have not tuned in to FTA TV at all last night.

I can only speak for myself but once the BBL and Aus Open finishes I’ll typically not bother with FTA TV (certainly of an evening) until the footy starts up again (but then again, I do like sport so there is a bias there).

A massive result for Nine with the Jelena Dokic doco. Also highlighted by Nine’s programming boss Hamish Turner in their summer ratings release today (via TVT).

Growing about 350k over 7 days, including 149k from 9Now and 100k from DVR timeshifting. Overnights were already great anyway.

Also strong demographics, No. 2 program only behind Married in the crucial 25-54 and only beaten by cricket and H&A apart from Married in the hard to reach 16-39.

And will probably get even more after 28 Day Consolidated too.
