Good win for Seven but it could have been a lot better with AFL in Sydney (40,000) outrated by 10Bold’s line up of NCIS (67,000) and NCIS LA (50,000 and 44,000) plus movie on 9Go!

#3

The Anzac Day eve AFL attracted more viewers than last year (464,000) when it was shown on 7mate against My Kitchen Rules.
But Seven’s decision to show live AFL on main channel in Sydney and Brisbane backfired. I think it won’t do it again unless one of NSW and/or QLD teams make the finals in September.
Mixed result for the ABC, with Anh’s Brush with Fame up on last week’s season premiere but The Weekly slipped.

Does it matter? They still won the night.

What would they really gain by showing alternative programming on a non-ratings night?

#5

Better ratings. A 1930s B/W film broadcast via youtube would have rated better.

This is all to appease the AFL’s obsession with trying to gain a footing in Sydney/Brisbane. Does the AFL have that much money to waste?

#6

What would you have done? Aired AFL on 7mate and delayed New Simpsons until after 11pm?

#7

But anything else would have cost them more. Why waste any money on something else unless you’re guaranteed of making a big profit. That would have been highly unlikely.

Swans v Giants is on the main channel this Saturday.

#9

Yeah, forgot about that.

#10

That hasn’t been a problem for the last 50 years.

As you mentioned in the other thread, they could have done a straight programming swap between 7/7mate. Seven has done that before.

#11

Last year Seven ran Modern Family repeats up against SOO and they rated better than last night’s offering.

#12

Running extra episodes of Modern Family just for Sydney/Brisbane would have cost them additional money which the slightly higher ratings would likely not have covered. I think this was a strategic decision as AFL is more important to the network long-term than Futurama/Simpsons/Family Guy which was the other option.

Running Modern Family would not have cost anything extra. Seven have obviously purchased multiple repeat rights to episodes as they now appear on 7Flix.

#14

Yeah most likely.

I think in the future though, they should stay with a local Sydney or QLD team. The local derby between the two Sydney teams is warranted to be on the main channel. Seven would also be keen to see the product grow, for obvious reasons.

And yes the AFL have a lot of money. I would expect expansion to happen with the introduction of a Tasmanian team and the likelihood of Canberra coming into play within the next decade. Both markets have 1 million ppl between them.

Fair enough for AFL matches like Swans vs Giants (and finals/other critical games featuring these two teams) to be on the main channel in Sydney, but 99% of Sydneysiders honestly couldn’t care less about an AFL match featuring two Melbourne teams regardless of any significance the ANZAC Eve match might have South of the Border. And yes, I’d be saying similar things if Nine decided to air yesterday’s ANZAC Day NRL game with two Sydney teams on the main channel in Melbourne.

Even by non-ratings period standards, surely Seven would’ve lost money in Sydney because of their decision to run the ANZAC Even AFL match in this market on Wednesday night?

A couple of movies (basically what airs on Channel Seven Sydney most Friday/Saturday nights during the AFL season) would’ve attracted more viewers/advertisers, with the 40,000 Sydneysiders who wanted to watch the ANZAC Eve AFL match being directed to 7mate.

Movies still cost money to run. And what about Futurama/Simpsons/Family Guy? Perhaps a technicality of the programming agreement states they may not be able to run the episodes on different channels in different states?

#17

I think you’ve probably been told this about 50 million times but the TV landscape isn’t the same as what it was. The networks don’t have as much cash to splash around as they used to have and are looking at cost cutting wherever possible.

And if it was a ratings week this week, they might have done the same. But it doesn’t really matter as much and they will probably win the week anyway.

They don’t get advertisers paying to advertise in retrospect, based on ratings. They might have to give some of those advertisers some free spots elsewhere, but that’s all part of the game.

The last I checked, anything on TV costs money to run. I also wouldn’t have a clue as to how Seven’s agreements for those animated shows work.

Maybe alternative programming to the AFL on Seven’s main channel in Sydney wouldn’t have scored massively high ratings, but surely it would’ve at least gotten a figure over 100k (which would be a far more acceptable number for a main channel than 40k)? Either way, I’d be very surprised if the ANZAC Eve AFL match didn’t air on 7mate in Sydney next year based on the appalling numbers received on Wednesday.

Nationally, sure.

But in Sydney? It’s been to my understanding that in recent years, Seven has NOT been the #1 TV network in this market.

#19

As usual, you’re way too parochial @SydneyCityTV. :joy: The future is national.

True but the AFL would have cost zero additional money in licencing/broadcasting costs seeing as they were producing the exact same feed for Melbourne anyway. Producing multiple different programming feeds for different markets is a cost as well.
