As expected, the early end to the singles game in the tennis saw the early evening numbers well down on recent results. However, it didn’t translate to an improvement for I’m A celebrity or the Big Bash, though it meant that I’m A Celebrity was even further in front of the competition than usual.

10 News First’s highest weekday number since July last year.

10 News First enjoying good ratings so far this week.
Daytime BBL from Moe was no match for the tennis.

You’d have to say that Ten made the right decision to run I’m A Celeb early this year. Impressive against the tennis and cricket.

Indisputable. It’s delivering incredible numbers no one expected opposite cricket and Tennis.

Wow, Nine still won easily, even though the Djokovic match finished just after 8:30pm eastern (7:30pm Brisbane and 5:30pm Perth).

Therefore expected I’m A Celebrity to win everywhere, it did win Sydney but oddly still smashed in Melbourne. 10 got very lucky.

Looks like tennis finals during the day beat the day time BBL cricket? And most of all expected BBL to get a bigger number last night in Session 2 due to the tennis, but it didn’t with a very disappointing number.

Maybe sport is not the golden goose everyone thought it was? Sure, the big events will always rate, but maybe the appetite for the regular comps is not so strong. Be interesting to see future bids for rights.

BBL feels like it’s starting to drag. I’m already bored. They should just keep BBL at a short and sharp 4 weeks.

Celebrity still doing great guns for 10.

Seven’s 2nd session figure is probably more damming than any of the other BBL numbers we’ve seen this season. Considering the drawcard AO men’s QF finished early, for the BBL to have pull worse figures than it has on other nights is a stark example of the decline the competition has had this season in numerous ways

Don’t lose sight of the fact sports broadcasters are winning the night and coming second, getting bigger shares overall. Celebrity is doing well on its own but its success is not lifting anything else in Ten’s schedule and it only airs for 90 minutes a night right? Sport is longer and while it may attract a lower audience than series television, the share of viewers watching the network for longer is higher.

I agree with all that. I was just wondering out loud if the networks may have paid a little too much for the rights. It’s a little unfair to single out sport over ratings decline, because all television is in decline, at least in its conventional forms. Sport is important for Networks & will be for the foreseeable future. I’m sure that Ten would love to have more sport in their schedule.

Well done to 10 for going early on I’m a Celeb to provide an alternative to cricket and tennis. Its paying off dividends being the best non-sports show each night outrating cricket since the launch.

The BBL match between Stars and Strikers at Moe was low with under 300k watching the coverage on Seven, with 51k watching on Fox Cricket. I thought that this game was one-sided with Stars winning over the Strikers. The crowd is very low given that it is played outside of Melbourne.

Having the tournament in 2 months is too much overload. Next week some states will return to school for the year. Not a lot of people are wanting to watch cricket in February, especially during the start of the 2019 Ratings season. AFLW will clash into BBL in February. You can see average crowd numbers are starting to fall from last year. Last year average crowd was about 26k, this year it hit to an average of 21,900.

Calm down a bit. It hasn’t beaten the tennis every night and 10 haven’t come close to beating Nine once, still doing below 15% main channel shares.

And isn’t I’m A Celebrity’s audience no bigger than the previous season?

It’s pleasing for 10, but certainly not amazing.

It’s provided a decent vehicle for 10 to promote some of its upcoming content and it’s definitely providing a better share than they’d have had with more traditional summer shows.

I suspect it’s success to date will come grinding to a halt next week when MAFS and MKR land, so TEN should enjoy it while it lasts.

Why is that relevant comparing BBL from this year to last?
