Another reality franchise launch and another disappointing result. This time Bachelorette Australia averaged 397,000 to rank third at 7.30pm. that is by far the lowest launch ever and the lowest episode rating ever. It compares to the 2020 season launch of 628,000. Despite that the show managed to top the 16-39 demographic and rank second in 18-49, 7th in 25-54.

Overall, Nine won the night, up one from last week, as The Block slipped 40,000 and Love Island missed the top 20 below 300k for the six consecutive night in linear viewing and down 75,000 week-on-week. However, last week’s Wednesday episode topped 700k in Total TV viewing.

Nine won all markets except Perth where Seven had a narrow victory. Nine also won the key demos with 10 second.

Seven’s Highway Patrol special dragged the network down to its lowest Wednesday since State of Origin in June. Seven News and Home and Away kept Seven competitive.

10’s share was up to its highest Wednesday share in 6 weeks while ABC also did better as Gruen’s second episode of the year was up almost 50k on last week.

SBS’s line up was down from the previous week with New Gold Mountain down 60k.

Gogglebox again topped Foxtel’s line-up, up 10k on last week.

It was close at breakfast with Today just 6k behind Sunrise.

10 must be wondering what’s going on with The Bachelorette, particularly after the show was renewed at the network’s upfronts only hours earlier. Last night’s premiere generated largely positive reaction on social media, but trailed behind Highway Patrol in Brisbane and Adelaide.

Whilst they’ve cast differently this year for Bachelorette, which was a big risk, the Bach Nation iterations have become pretty set and forget in their formats and have obviously lost the shine they once had.

10’s challenge next year will be wanting to figure out a way to bring both shows back, but reinventing them in a way that will resonate with audiences.

This line is pretty telling from McGarveys interview with TV Tonight about the fact viewership is on the wane for both shows:

The Bachelor / Bachelorette
The Bachelor has had many, many successful seasons. Audiences move on and tastes, aspirations and expectations change. So we’re actually just deep into the work as to what specifically those brands look like next year. What are the changes that need to happen, whilst remaining true to the brand?

Going to be interesting to watch Love Island vs Bachelorette ratings battle. I imagine both shows will cannibalise each other but which show will suffer the most?

They don’t air at the same time though?

They needed to rest the Bachelor franchise. Novelty has well and truly worn off.

Bachelor format is tired and over exposed which shines through on the ratings. Will need a significant reboot next year, but even then with so many ‘love’ shows throughout the year across the networks you have to wonder if next year will be the last.

Last night the two shows overlapped for half an hour or so.

Best night so far for 9Gem’s 007 marathon, also topping m/c and m/c key demos, plus a 4% channel share.

The Bachelorette was the premiere. They all go for that long.

Normal episodes won’t.

And overlapping isn’t direct competition. Not a fair comparison.

Strong demos from The Bachelorette. Its hard to pass judgement until we see the figures it gets in 7 days time.

Wow. Surprised to see The Bachelorette so low. I thought this season might do better than the last.

Watched The Vicar of Dibley for the umpteenth time. Still laugh every time. Putting Jim in charge of the public announcements at the local fair was always a risk…‘no no refreshments will be served’, ‘no no parking on the lawn’. Love it!

Same can be said for all dating, relationship and wedding-themed programs which air on the commercial networks, if I’m being honest.

The sad thing is that instead of making the format more realistic, we’ll probably see D-grade celebrities as the stars of The Bachelor/ette 2022.

The bisexual contestant format may be the reason why many 50+ viewers aren’t watching The Bachelorette, hence the low total people figure. It’s doing well in 16-39 which is what Ten care about most.

Is part of the issue with The Bachelorette that 10 have gone to the well one too many times with Brooke?

Considering she’s featured in The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise and now as The Bachelorette, is it simply the case that viewers want to see a fresh face looking for love rather than the same person yet again?

Yes, that may be the problem (with Brooke appearing in “too many”). Or that people are finally sick of these dating shows in general …
