10’s share improved last night thanks to a 90 minute episode of the Bachelor. Seven also got a boost while Nine and SBS were steady. ABC saw its share fall.
Nine won the three east coast markets, there was a tie between Nine and Seven in Adelaide (with 10 2 points behind) while Seven was 10 points clear of Nine in Perth thanks to a double digit share for 7Mate. Nine won 25-54 and 10 won 18-49 and 16-39.
ABC’s Hard Quiz was the number one entertainment program.
The Block continued its downward trend losing another 40,000 viewers from Tuesday to a season low 651,000. The Bachelor was steady and topped all key demos. Later Mad As Hell lost 50,000 viewers.
News numbers continue to fall.

What factors explain the falling numbers of free-to-air viewership?
Current TV offerings not attractive enough or just the decline of Australians watching TV now that we’ve got other options (i.e. Netflix, Disney+, etc)?
In the first half of the year, there were weeks where all 3 commercial networks had huge ratings. From what I remember, sometimes Masterchef and LegoMasters/ The Voice both had over 1 mil viewers on the same night.
Now we’re seeing Bachelor go to 500k (don’t think Bachelorette with the 2 sisters will fare much better) and The Block also losing viewers daily.

For me personally I don’t watch much free to air TV as most of it is meh and not very appealing and my viewing consists mainly of Netflix/Foxtel.
The only shows I am currently watching on free to air are Halifax, Masked Singer and HYBPA.

I think you almost solved your own question, in a way?
You seem to have pointed out it’s the change of shows that have led viewers away?
People over the scripted drama and there’s fatigue. FTA isn’t appointment viewing anymore now that we have choice and people prefer to binge. Put something decent on, don’t delay it, reduce amount of ads and have exclusive content and well you may find an audience.

And the audience will be cannablised even more with 10 Shake soon to launch
Huge drop for Gogglebox this week to 164,000 compared to the the debut that had 202,000 the week before.
Live AFL on Fox Footy might have taken away some pay TV viewers.

Yes I thought so too, but I’m pretty sure Bachelor and Block were both still going okay last year - both shows have declined rapidly in the ratings in the span of a season, which is peculiar.
For me, it is the lack of originality. Reality shows have become repetitive and the new offerings, are just old shows rehashed eg Plate of Origin. Good shows are few and far between these days and with so many options now available eg Netflix, Stan etc free to air has its work cut out for it to remain relevant. Catch up tv is another factor. No need to watch things ‘live’ anymore.

Whilst Seven are barely throwing a punch and giving Nine and 10 a clear run, Nine would have to be worried about The Block’s numbers. You would think it would increase without much competition but it’s dropping everyday. The reveals will probably save the show but the main show figures are underwhelming so far.
Such a shame Seven doesn’t have a hit on their hands at the moment. If they had something that is a ratings hit (like Holey Moley which has the potential) then The Block would’ve been finished.

I agree that if Seven had half-decent competition, The Block and The Bachelor/ette would be finished.
Not that I’d be complaining though, The Block should’ve ended at least 4-5 years ago IMO! Meanwhile if The Bachelor/ette is to regain any credibility (not that I’m likely to be a viewer in any case), any future “star” Bachelors & Bachelorettes need to have finding true love as their main focus - not boosting media profiles as I suspect the case has been with several past Bachelors & Bachelorettes!
That and the product placement, which is at levels that are insulting to the intelligence of viewers.

Bachelor is out performing the block across the key demographics - I would be worried if I was 9.

It’s not uncommon. It happens every year. Nine will never be worried about the block until that over the top product placement drops off due to lack of interest from sponsors. It would be the show that advertisers love. It’s harder to fast forward through all those in show ads.

Yep those product placements throughout the show are key, and you can understand why the show’s been going so long - something like The Voice is hard to find cross-promotion and sponsorship, whereas The Block, Lego Masters are great for product placements.

How does LEGO Masters work for product placement? I thought Nine had to pay LEGO for the product. Even the use of Disney storm troopers this year wasn’t paid for.
