Nine grabbed almost half last night’s TV audience thanks to “The Decider” game three of State of Origin. The audience was on par with the other two games of this season (1.771m and 1.797m) but with less competition on the other networks Nine’s share was higher – its best result of this survey.

Elsewhere the competition from the rugby league saw everything else well down with Gruen the top entertainment offering in prime time despite losing +100k on the previous week.

A Dog House repeat on 10 managed just over 300k while Seven’s Highway Patrol repeat was less than 300k but still made the top 20.

It was all about Origin last night. It was the No.1 show in Melbourne and Adelaide, and No.2 in Perth behind Seven News.

It will be interesting to see if 9Now’s live streaming rating of the match can get close to 500,000 which will be a new record.

The Weekly with Charlie Pickering finished its season on a low.

Huge numbers for the Stste of Origin, as expected.

The Dog House rpt beat Highway Patrol Special

In Melbourne, the game shows were VERY close, Hot Seat won by just 1k. In Brisbane they were also very close, with The Chase winning by 3k.

Do you mean number one in Sydney and Brisbane?

I wonder if there’s merit in trying to re-establish an AFL State of Origin.

I mean it by saying Origin was No.1 in Melbourne and Adelaide, by pointing out the event’s popularity in AFL states.

You mean #1 in its timeslot? Because the news services rated higher in those markets.

The idea is raised every year, but it’s very unlikely to happen for a few reasons:

  • Clubs will be not be willing to release players due to risk of injury etc.
  • Victoria is by far the strongest state, supplying over 50% of players in the AFL
  • In the 1980s, State of Origin was popular due to VIC v SA, and to a lesser extent VIC v WA rivalries. These state-based rivalries became redundant once the Eagles and Crows joined the competition as essentially teams to represent their states
  • NRL State of Origin is very simple, NSW v QLD every year. AFL would have to have VIC, SA, WA and either an “Allies” side or NSW, QLD, TAS, NT creating scheduling headaches as some fixtures would be more popular than others
  • State of Origin was discontinued in the 1990s due to dwindling crowd figures. Games at the MCG were drawing less than a regular season game. The NRL rarely ever gets regular season games with blockbuster crowds of over 50,000 whilst these are a weekly occurrence in the AFL.
