General TV History

This was from The Age sometime in 1987 when all 3 networks were in the midst of takeover activity

networks1987

The table incorrectly attributed CTC7 to the Seven Network when at that point it was probably still not aligned to anyone as aggregation was still 2 years away. They probably just made the assumption that “7” equalled Seven Network.

By the end of the year, Skase would buy out ATN/HSV/BTQ7 and sell off TVQ0 to Darling Downs Telecasters.

STW9 was later sold off to comply with ownership restrictions
ATV10/TEN10 sold off to Frank Lowy
TCN/GTV/QTQ9 sold to Kerry Packer

ADS7 (picked up by Kerry Stokes earlier that year in the HWT carve up) became ADS10 to align to the Ten Network, SAS10 became SAS7 to join Seven, as Robert Holmes a Court’s TVW7 was aligning to the Seven Network.

An example of an ABC regional variation in 1992- a Melbourne only promo for tickets to The Late Show, not including an area code at the beginning of the phone number.

Presumably other regions would have gone to a promo or something while this was being played out.

They probably played that to regional Victoria as well. I can’t see them opting out just for a 30-second promo. Country people watching would have had to be wise enough to know that the show was based in Melbourne and being 7 digits was a Melbourne number. Country telephone numbers were 6 digits.

I reckon it happened often that ads and promos appeared on country TV (ABC and commercial channels) that had Melbourne telephone numbers without an area code shown (in the days before it was all “03” across the state)

It’d be great if WIN put some of this to air. Even if it was buried late at night on a multichannel. Surely Bruce would be all over this as more content for his WINdependent Eleven

…and an early “See It First” promo for Nine News Sydney with Peter Overton in 2009 (@0.31 of the clip below):

Also on Nine, I think it was used for a State Of Origin promo one year around 2001-02.

Found these old photos taken from a trip to London in August 2000

Still don’t know what itv was thinking with that early 00s logo. Garish and ugly.

One pic of BBC Television Centre (I had a better pic of TC but it wasn’t in the pile? Misplaced somewhere :frowning: ) and another BBC building which I haven’t labelled but I think it was BBC International or something? Guessing it was nearby Television Centre

And a live stream of the first series of Big Brother at Leicester Square (again I had a better picture but it’s not here)

Yet the Channel 4 logo is timeless

And the BBC’s logo is…well, it’s not ugly but it’s not particularly nice though.

Funny how the year 2009 looks like it could have been from the 90s, considering it was only 9 years ago!

Yep.

Not sure about others, but I reckon Peter Overton was still very much in his “60 Minutes reporter mode” (if that makes sense - more recently that has turned into a bit more dramatic, 6pm bulletin-style of presenting) while reading the news in Early 2009!
