Nine won Tuesday – up 2 points from Monday as well as improving 2 points from the previous Tuesday. That was largely at the expense of Seven that slipped 2 while ABC and 10 were steady.

Nine won in Sydney narrowly, was 10 points clear of competition in Melbourne, won Adelaide and was second in Brisbane and third in Perth. Seven won Brisbane and Perth. In key demo groups Nine ranked first with 10 in second place.

Home and Away was the top entertainment program while The Amazing Race was again the top show at 7.30pm as Holey Moley continued its slide, now having lost more than half of its debut audience.

The tennis averaged just 464,000 which compares to 672,000 for night two of the 2020 AO.

After 7.30, NCIS on 10 managed a win over The Good Doctor that slipped 131,000 from last week’s season debut.

In the 25-54 demo TAR was 1st with Holey Moley 7th and the tennis 9th. NCIS was 11th with The Good Doctor 18th NCIS: LA was 20th.

With world No.1 Ashleigh Barty in action, Nine was always going to win the night. However, 9Gem’s 1.5% share due to its tennis coverage will be a concern.

Channel 9 managed to boost its prime time share with Aussie player Ashleigh Barty playing during the night. However it was The amazing race that won its 7:30pm timeslot.

Best part of the tennis, even if averages may be lower, is that they provide excellent late night % shares which boot the night.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Barty match pulled. Such a quick match that Nine would be disappointed, but now it leads to a big Thursday night for them of Aussie v Aussie.

I know people love HD but you gotta wonder for those 30-55k viewers, if it would be better placed on 9life to allow for Gem to hold its bigger shares.

Will be interesting if Nine News Adelaide wins the first week of the ratings year.

The broadcast agreement might require HD coverage. And 9life isn’t available in all regional areas is it?

Besides, the NRL usually rates lower than 30-55k when it airs on 9GEM on Friday nights in VIC/SA/WA.

According to Nine on Twitter, the tennis would have easily won the 7:30 hour. The Amazing Race was well behind.

Barty won her match at around 8.10pm AEDT, well before The Amazing Race began in Brisbane and Perth due to time difference, so the match won overall simply because it attracted more viewers in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Holey Moley all right.

The way it was talked up and advertised it’s clear they were planning this as to how Ninja launched. 1m plus.

Give up.

Sure. That’s how television works. Just give up.

I think we can all agree, this show should only be shown once a week. Its not a show that should be drawn out for 90 minutes and played 3 times a week.

Both Nine and Seven will now be pondering whether they paid too much for the rights to tennis and cricket after huge ratings drops this year.

I think we should wait until the release of live VPM ratings next week and the week after. If they show that live streaming ratings of Australian Open were lower than last year, then we can argue that Nine paid too much for the tennis rights.

I know we’re still in summer and daylight saving, etc etc, but how sad is it that in the first ratings week of the year with supposedly all guns firing that none of the commercial networks can get anything above 510,000 at 7.30pm. Are networks just so obsessed with reality formats that they lose sight of the audience out there who don’t want reality shows?

I hear what you’re getting at, but reality was only on 2 channels for 70/90 mins, there’s another 15/16 channels to choose from (and apparently that’s what people have done).

I watched four episodes of Superstore on Netflix last night, a show which has consistently been in the top 10 on Netflix Australia for a few weeks. I’m not interested in the current reality shows.

If MAFS holds its audience from previous years then the networks only have themselves to blame.
