You’ve just made my point again. All of the people you mentioned were on the original Channel 10 show and have had great careers. The 7 version of the show, not so much.

You can’t compare the two. The 10 version wasn’t up against social media, YouTube and Instagram etc. Back then this was was one of the only platforms to get recognition. Now, there are so many other ways to get fame.

Doesn’t that argument still prove the point Jag is making though? Artists like those mentioned before who previously gained fame from shows like Aus Idol don’t need it anymore because social media is giving them the same (or possibly better) platform.

What you get left with are the second cut. That’s not to say they aren’t decent singers or couldn’t make a good career in the industry, or even that they may still be that diamond in the rough. What it is saying is that if they had the it factor to become a household name, they would have already been found long before going on shows like Aus Idol.

Which comes back to the question: Why do so many people still watch it? (Because this is the rating thread). In some sense, probably nostalgia and the hope that maybe this year they will find another superstar. It’s also generally good entertainment, probably above the average pub act (that is highly dependent on the pub).

Maybe people watch Idol because they like watching music on our screens? There isn’t many “singing shows” airing on our screens these days. The lack of Variety/ Talk Shows here where musicians perform to the viewers doesn’t help. That’s why some artists perform their latest single on Idol.

Maybe this is why Australian Idol and The Voice still rate relatively well. I dunno.

Also because of, as referenced above, dislike towards MAFS.

7 and 9 are the biggest FTA networks. When one rates well, naturally the most-watched alternative would be the other.
